opinions on this article about rest inbetween sets?

Nothing really groundbreaking in there. I don't think it's a surprise to anyone that greater rest between sets leads to an ability to do more reps on each set.

Way too much shit to read for me, I let my body tell me when to do the next set. I know if its too soon or too long.

The tl;dr version:

Lifters started w/ 85% 1RM and were tested on their ability to lift as many reps as possible on subsequent sets. Obviously, those with a 5 minute rest performed better than those with a 2 or 1 minute rest.

This just about sums up the entire article for anyone not interested in reading it:

The 5-minute rest between sets
resulted in the highest training volume completed for all exercises, with the 2- and 1-
minute rest conditions following in descending order. Our primary results support rest
interval length as a strategy for increasing training volume, which is believed to enhance
and stimulate greater strength and hypertrophy adaptations.

i couldnt make it past part of the first page...

Im doin volume training so 45 seconds for me between sets

In the article they consider high volume workouts to be heavy workouts. Shorter rest periods relate to lower volume, of a 45 second workout may lead to more lighter sets, but lower volume.

That's why they conclude that workouts with 5 mins rest between heavy sets lead to higher volume, strength and muscle hypertrophy.

Please don't bite my head off if you don't agree with this. This is how they sum up volume in the article.

For me, the whole concept of volume is meaningless. I rest long enough to give me the best compromise between strength and time for each set. The length of time I rest depends on how heavy I want to go for the next set and how well I've recoverd from the previous one.

All it is a differentiation in semantics. "Volume" as referred to in that study is total reps with a given weight, while "volume" as described by the other poster is referring to reps in a given period of time. Different meanings of the same word.

I might as well mention that your choice of rest periods should obviously be based off of your objectives. If strength gains are a priority, it's important to take more rest. But honestly, I've never seen much of a need to be so precise as to set a stopwatch or anything like that. And most of the time, anyone telling you to rest exactly ____ minutes is blowing smoke. There are just too many factors that vary from person to person to make unqualified statements like that with any accuracy.

LOL,

I actually didnt vread the articl - was just stating the rest period I was currently using.

Im finding the volume stuff Im doing now amazing for pumps, hyperthrophy and a SHITLOAD more intense than low reps/ heavy weights.

It hurts more and I feel better gains. Also, my strength is improving more this way. After 6 weeks volume training, I did a coupla sessions on heavy ass weights and my strength had improved considerably on 5rm.

just sayin. Gota change it up.

I usually incorporate high, medium and low reps into the same workouts.
