Operation Gatekeeper

For those not aware of what Operation Gatekeeper is - it is the San Diego / Southern California portion of the INS and it's plan to stop illegal entry into the USA from Mexico.

Here are the stats:

1993
San Diego: 531,689
Yuma: 23,584
Tucson: 92.639

2000
San Diego: 151,681
Yuma: 108,747
Tucson: 616,346

These numbers only deal with illegal immigrants, not those smuggling, providing false papers, threats to officers etc.

The purpose of Operation Gatekeeper was to show a force at the border - with more patrol agents, night sweeps and a highly visable Border Partol presence [new trucks, new uniforms, awereness programs, bounties etc]. It's been a huge flop - and now the tax payers are being punished. How? They are forced to pay for more agents that get half the amount fo work done. They are glorified baby sitters with handguns.

When the main points of entry were patrolled with more force - the illegal's simply swtiched to the foot path's and took the "longer route" to get in. So now the border agents are't guarding the borders - they are makeshift paramedics that have to carry food, water, blankets and first aid kits to help the immigrants that are stranded in the desert. What happens then? They are taken to a medical facility [if necessary], fed, clothed, housed for the night then deported the next day. All this on the taxpayers dime.....

I wonder if that was in the job description when they signed up.
