My coworkers and I were headed back from a job today on the highway and got stuck in traffic for about a half hour. The traffic was because of an accident that happened, it was raining and very windy, windy enough to knock over some trees.
We came around the corner and saw a tree that looked like it had fallen across the right lane of the highway and got hit by a car, because it was broken and bent backwards, but it only looked like a small tree, not that big.
Well about a quarter mile up the road there was a tractor trailer pulled over to the shoulder of the highway with just a cop car there and flares blocking off the right lane.
As we got closer we could see where the rest of that tree was - it looked like it had fallen right into the path of this tractor trailer and the guy just ran into it. The whole top of the tree was lodged up inside the cab of the truck, smashed right through the windshield. All we could see of the driver was his left shoulder and part of his back, motionless in the cab of the truck, and the cop was obviously in no hurry to be helping the guy, so one could only presume he was dead. It made me sick to my stomach.
It just makes you think of how one minute you could be going along with your daily life, and then BAM! It's over.
The scary part was the cab of the truck we were in was the same height as that tractor trailer. We were running late getting out of the job today, I just keep thinking that if we were on time and where headed down the highway a little earlier, that could have been us.
Scary shit.
