Occipital nerve blocks tomorrow

velvett said:
I'm not sure if it's nerves or absolute dread that I'm feeling (both?).

:worried:

I hope I can sleep tonight.

I think I know what having cold feet feels like now.

You have any ambien or anything? Maybe run to the store and get some simply sleep, its OTC. Couple of those should calm you and make you just sleepy enough to doze off.

Are you having Lasik?

Nope, I have occipital neuralgia, never block is supposed to help with the pain.

Hmm, might have to do that, thanks.

Thanks Ariel.

I think I might have to go read a book or something and get my mind off this, I'm usually ok stuff like this but for some reason I'm not with this.

Like if I can think of one chic who would end up dating ralph waldo emerson, it would be you... i mean you emanate his whole piece on self reliance...

It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great woman is she who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.

If there were one person I knew who gave this quote life, it would be you.

awww, good luck.

i hope it's nothing for you.

do you have eye pain?

When I'm under a lot of stress, The left side of my lower lip will droop and twitch and I will subconsciously start clicking my jaw.... Fucking hate it..

I wish I could be there with you. It won't be 10% as bad as you think its going to be. You'll be doped up on versed and fentanyl before they even start the block. I know that doesnt help and your very nervous though. I would hold your hand for you.... We have a couple anterior sciatic blocks and a bier block to do tomorrow.....

As for what drug they're going to use....personal choice of the anesthesiologist.

Good luck!

Thanks :)

I had a bad experience last year with a neuro that didn't know what he was doing so I'm a bit edgy to have a need near my skull again.

Do you know which steriods they typically use?

You make it sound pretty routine.

I needed to hear that

Yes, behind the eye and the entire socket, sometimes my vision is so bad I can't drive. It's like looking at the sun and then looking away but constant - you know that bright fog you get, it's like that.

It's a small part of a bigger problem.

GAH

Eye doc is Friday.

:rose: hope you can get some sleep Vel... It'll be just fine suga.

If you were my patient and there were no allergies or contraindications, I'd give you a unit of IV Decadron (Dexamethasone).

You're gonna do great. Keep me posted, k?

It went well over all.
I have no pain at the moment *knocks on wood*.

They were behind schedule so I worked myself into a knot sitting in the waiting room (ambulatory care unit). But the woman that prepped me was great and unwound me in minutes and the doctor was fantastic (I'm on roll lately - finally).

The shots were painless compared to nerve pain, the needle was small, the worst parts were hitting certain tender areas and the pressure of the fluid was very uncomfortable, it was like suffocating until the local kicked in.

After the shots I was talking to the doc and I went to a cold sweat, dizzy, nauseous, my BP plummeted and I passed out. This has happened to me before and I was dreading that it would happen again.

The nurse said it was some kind reaction (I think it started with a V?) and that her daughter is the same way, which actually made me feel better although I wish someone had told me that years ago.

So far so good, I'm in no pain right now and I'm set to go back next week for round two.

Thanks Chris

Is this what you were talking about?

Sorry you are not well. Glad it all went ok. :)

Sounds like it.
Only took 26 years to find out..

Hmmm, I seem to have that as well, but reading the definition, not so sure. I used to get it at the dentist's office when they gave me a shot to numb the pain. Now they say it was epinephrine causing it and they give patients another shot so it doesn't happen to them. It has worked so far.

I do get nausea from other stuff like shots or just people prodding me where they shouldn't be. (lol) I was told "fight or flight" blah blah. Maybe it is that V-thing, but who knows. I definitely don't get it at the dentist anymore. hmmm.

Anyway, glad it went OK with you. Hope it works out and you get rid of the pain once and for all.

Hey Vel, I missed this thread........glad it went well. Fear sucks, but you're a trooper
I too passed out cold when given an IV.....Passing out sucks and I still fear it some days.
I did pass out on the highway back in Nov. Was given enough time just to pull over to the side of the road. I was more worried about my car than me ;-)

Glad it went well. You're a tough cookie

I'm sorry, a little OT, but I have to say one more thing. I hate it when you "warn" someone of your issue with getting light headed or whatever and they treat you as if you're the only person on Earth who has ever had that happen to them. wtf? Shouldn't they know about this condition?

I'm bringing Velvett with me to the next Dr's appointment. lol jk Vel loves Drs. ha

LOL - On friday they called me to get a medical history and I made a point of telling them in great detail the last two times I passed out the same way in a doctor's office and she said, "oh that would never happen here like that".

I've been lucky with the IV so far *knocking wood*
It's a horrible right, you know it's happening and there's nothing you can do about it.

LOL - That's something I would do, worry about getting the car safely off the road.

I still have no pain, a stiff neck yes, but not the nerve pain.
*fingers crossed*

I've been looking for help with this for years as it became progressively worse, if this helps me I may just get my life back.

I've never passed out in a doctor's office. I have nearly passed out from severe dehydration. Stupid fuckin ER nurse was trying to sell me some shit about the vaso-vagal reflex or some shit.

Oh yea, bitch, do your lips turn blue, your skin get cold and have no discernable pulse and hardly any readable blood pressure because of passing out?

Sounds like a typical reaction (or, worst case, allergy) to the epinephrine used in injections. Ask them about it next time or mention a possible reaction to epi before getting your next IV or inject. (You can ask nurses, too; they're familiar with it.)

If you ever want some opinions on meds Rx'd for neuralgia, feel free to PM me. I've had a number of different ones for damage to the C8 nerve during surgeries.
