up until a few weeks ago i was absolutely going to vote for Johnson because those fucking republicans shit on Ron Paul. But then the 47% comment was made and that got me swaying, then just the other day Romney got infront of a camera and despite all of this cutting spending talk started talking about building more submarines then the pentagon even wanted or thinks is necessary. Those things are closing on 3B and romney wants to build 3 a year....awesome!!

Have you seen the list of proposed cuts they would support? The vast majority of those cuts, virtually 3/4 of them, are cuts to programs that benefit the poor and support the arts and humanities. In a time when most school districts are cutting funding to the art programs the last thing we need to do is make further cuts to what little culture this nation has. It's been proven that regular exposure to the arts and music improves children's scores on I.Q. tests.
Oh, and the other big cut is to Amtrak, when gas prices are rising and ridership is at the highest point it's been in ages. Unfortunately, rails are just like roads, they NEED to be maintained. Talk about energy independence, one of the ways we can become independent is by increasing the use of public transportation, not cutting funding to it.
An we can't keep dumping everything back on states. One, states are going bankrupt. Two, if you dump it on states, then that means increase in state taxes. Am I the only one that noticed that Ryan refused to answer Biden when Biden accused them of potentially eliminating the mortgage interest deduction?

Simply put, there is absolutely a correlation between art/music and improving math and science scores. Delete arts from the curriculum, kids get stupider, not smarter.
When I'm out of town working I stay in a hotel with a bunch of OFT from texas. They somehow forget TX used to be a blue state and act like it's been republican central for the last 100 years.

No, I can't agree, sorry. I'm older than you and I've watched the science/math curriculum change from the time I went to school to when my kids went. In about 20 years science and math have become way more demanding, earlier. Logically you'd think if THAT was all that was needed, America's scores would have been going up. Meanwhile it's the art, music, phys. ed. departments that are losing funding and compared to other countries America lags. It can't be a coincidence.
Not to mention the fact that if you cut arts and music, there's a huge percentage of children whose only exposure to art will be graffiti and the only music they'll ever hear is rap. Is THAT a healthy direction for the future? Kids who can't appreciate a Van Gogh or a symphony by Mozart?
Finally, not all brains work the same. A child who has no gift for math may be an artistic or musical genius, but if all they find is failure because they can't "get" math how will they ever find success if nothing else is offered (particularly if they come from a poor family that can't afford to send them for private music lessons or provide them with art supplies?)

All the democrats I knew growing up are staunch republicans now.
This makes no sense since all we ever hear is how american public education system has gotten soft over the last few decades i.e. kids coming out of high school with 5th or 6th grade reading levels, pitiful math and science scores, etc.
In china and india they dont seem to have a problem demanding more of their kids earlier, which is exactly what they are doing and getting good results while besting americans in math/sci.
Sounds like american parents have been failing their kids over the last 20 years if thats the case.
The kids who are into graffiti and rap were never going to appreciate fine arts. That sort of thing is cultural and rarely overcome but i guess "it it changes once kids life" etc etc
Once again, you keep saying Im eliminating arts altogether when Im saying the funding for math/sci should be the focus.
It works very simply, the funding to schools is finite. The choice is to either get MORE funding from somewhere, or take funding from other areas. That's what's happening where I live. Funding is being cut to vo-tech and arts programs because there just isn't enough to go around. I already pay disgustingly high taxes (my property measures 75' x 135' and my yearly RE taxes are over $5,500, no lie -- and NO the teachers are NOT overpaid, Senators are overpaid, not teachers) so what do we do, raise property taxes even further, cut funding to other programs or ... wait for it ... hope the federal government will provide some additional resources since we spend a FRACTION OF A FRACTION of tax revenue on education compared to the DOD budget?!? What's more important, protecting this country now, or insuring it's success in the future? Apparently there is only enough money to fund one or the other.

Your child will be happy, successful, never need therapy, never have social anxiety or experience failure, will never be in an IEP or need special ed., medications or therapy.

Get her to teach special ED. My mother taught severely emotionally disturbed kids as well as severely handicapped kids and made well over 100K/yr., she has full benefits from her teachers union until she dies and since CA is broke, they paid her to retire 3 years early so they could replace her with a cheaper teacher.
She was originally going to try special education but decided against it after talking to some of those teachers. I'm trying not to be disrespectful to the kids, but they basically said they change diapers all day.
Also, there's no teacher's union in GA. No teacher of any sort will ever make 100k here. Which, IMO, is overpaying anyway.

well but i think mm is right, i've also read the studies that show the correlation between right and left brain development. I used to think just like you, it's art who gives a shit. But it's not as simple as macrome or arts and crafts stuff...it's right brain thinking that needs to be developed. The left side of the brain is the calculation stuff while the right side is how best to apply those calculations, it a nutshell. The countries that are beating us in those sciences get this concept, that's why their beating us. And frankly the loss of PE in schools is seriously alarming. Kids should absolutely be forced to move around. We can't breed generations of smart but ultimately fat and lazy humans.

In japan your wife would be making in the 60's at least, they actually respect teachers there but also demand more out of them because they pay them what they beleive their value is to society. Here teachers are treated like pieces of shit then we act surprised when we can't get any good ones.

Not to get into a pissing contest since Im sure you win (lose?), but in the last 10 years Ive had 4 major surgeries, ear reconstruction surgery and the accompanying hearing loss, eustachian tube doesnt work, cant get any water in my ear whatsoever or its off to the doctor, torn tendons, torn miniscus, certain addictions stemming from childhood exposures/trauma, etc etc.
But I never bitch about it or think the government should pay for it or anything because what do I always say?
