Let´s assume the worst will happen and NK launches a missile and the US retaliates.
Can Russia and China determine that these missiles are not aimed at them and conclude that there is no reason for them to fire missiles ,too?

Sure if we can contact them and can insure them of our "Friendly" intentions in time! Several times the US and USSR came close to TNW from minor "Bugs" and mistakes! Not including the Cuba Missile Crises and the "Sub" mistakes to name a few! Once a certain point is crossed, sometimes they develop a mind of their own! To never reach that point is the only way to ensure a higher precentage of "Safety!" And when "Time" is involved mistakes are multipled by powers of 10!

And to the original topic, i don´t believe it will escalate anyway.
China doesn´t want that crisis to develop into a nuclear war and they can cut of NK of a lot of important ressources.
Maybe it´s a kind of marketing trick on the side of NK. Like "see how much BS the US is willing to take if you have ICBMs and nukes. Buy 3 and get one for free."

Yes there was an arrangement of the movement of Nukes in Cuba for the movement of Nukes in Europe!

If there was a crisis that Chinese could not handle , as is SARS, they would lose face to the world. So they denied it.
But i do believe that some small scale nuclear war right to the south of them is not good for their agenda, so they are likely to exercise some real pressure on NK to stop it.

"Saving Face" is illrelevent now! SARS is a great thing for Chinas Communist Party Leaders! They are rolling back many of the "Little Freedoms" the Chinese Citizens had under the Label of SARS protection! The Capitalist faction is not pleased though!

They have "Formed" and are "Pulling" the strings behind N. Korea! Unfortantly they have Kim as the "Puppet!" How long they can control the situation or if the C faction of the C/C faction will cut the "Strings" or "Pull Tightly" on them only they know!

That's not 'the worst.' The worst is 5 or 6 dozen nukes launched at the US simultaneously. And that is not fiction.
