No more weight training for me...

Longhorn85

...at least for quite a while. For years I wanted to bench large, and once I got there i didn't like how my body looked, nor did my wife. Plus, running became an absolute chore for me, and I love to run!

For the last three months I've gone back to the basics: running, pushups and crunches. That's it. No major diet changes though i think I get less hungry now. The result is a loss of 20 lbs, a 4% drop in bodyfat, and, even though I am not as strong as before, I can see much more muscle. Clothes fit much better and my overrall health is better (bp, bmi, etc)

How did your body look exactly? I gather you lost fat, muscle and strength and leaned out a bit since you can see more muscle no?

As long as your happy more power to you.

and you posted this on the WEIGHT TRAINING and WEIGHT LIFTING Forum because.........................

Touche', but only three periods are necessary. Because I have been lifting regularly for years.

and the basics are Squat, Deadlift, Bench - FYI, not pushups and crunches - my 8yr old does those!

Basic weightlifting exercises, yes. Good for your 8yr old, let me know how he's doing when he's 45.

What did you not like about how your body looked??? You could have maintained your strength, dropped 20lbs and 4-5% body fat and maybe been very happy with how you looked??

Juice is not an option for me, and I'm not stopping at 20lbs. I am 6'1", 217 now (19%) and my goal is 200 (<15%)

How are u possibly going to lose anything but 17 pounds of muscle if you are giving those muscles are less than the resistance they adapted to expect? And then running hard assuring a caloric defacit on top of that?

There's a lot more efficient ways to get smaller that include sensible weight training and don't sacrifice near as strength.

As long as the bodyfat continues to drop and I stay ripped i'm ok with some muscle loss

i don't think 6'1" / 200 /15% is a bad place to be

Just watch the excess cardio. And do NOT leave out weights completely. Im not saying " 6'1" / 200 /15% is a bad place to be" but no reason to catabolize the muscle you WANT to keep b/c this seems to be working for you now. Things will change and pushups and crunches will not be your savior. You do not want to take a turn down the skinny fat path.

I would highly recommend (to much of the guys dismay) getting a lifting routine together for maintenance.

I didnt mention juice at all, i was saying I think you could cut and maintain as much muscle as possible starting from your weight. But not without weights...I don't get why you thought to cut out weights since you were 20% body fat, youre going to retain LBM from lifting and dieting.

Drop the pushups - do bench press
Drop the running - do deadlifts
Drop the attitude or I'll drop you

lol - just kidding

Whatever floats you and your ladys boat is good - but listen to what folks are saying -managing LBM is not as easy as dropping weight - not in the slightest - meaning if you used to weight train you need to maintain somewhat or you will loose LBM - protien can only do so much.

And BTW - my 8yr old can do 29 pushups, and 71 full situps w/ out stoping. He alos did 178 rev's on the jumprope for his presidential fitness test in 60 secs.....I am proud of him. I got him a bar from Glen Pendlay for Xmas so he can start learning the form of the olympic lifts - it is going to be tons of fun...and at 40 he will be a beast, just like his daddy.

lol, as long as you stay healthy...how's the shoulder?

BTW, that's awesome that you're giving your kid a chance to take an interest and develop skills in lifting so early.

Shoulder is dog shit - no overhead work for a few weeks and may lay off bench next week as my benching today is feeling a bit weird - check my log, I'm updating it next.

Yeah - Glen said it was an awesome way to hang w/ his kid and my son really adores me so this is a way to get closer - pretty sweet if you ask me. As I am sure many lifters kids do - he loves to show me his muscles - MOst Muscular is his fav....it's awesome - I love that kid.

what ever makes you happy is what's important. imo, i think you are being very extreme by cutting weights out of your routine.
why don't you take a more athletic approach to training? that might be what you are looking for.

wakefib is right. Try some strong man type of training with sled pulling, farmer walk, etc. If you like running do some sprinting, 400m sprints are great.

I assume you also bought him a year's supply of Amplify-XT Chewables for Christmas... :chomp:

Athletics are what is driving some of this. I used to be a 6'8" high jumper, and I intend to compete in a masters track meet next summer.

Remember, dropping lbs is not simply shedding LBM. By monitoring my bodyfat I'll be careful not to throw away what I've gained over the past 15 yrs.

Or just man up and do some Squats...lol

sorry, but this is a lot fo fun for me.

I have done more than my share of squats, but for a change I'd like to be able to run a 10K without getting a rash on my inner thighs.

Bro I totally feel you. I did a 12 mile hill run w/ my wife and mother in law (I think she is 50) last year and they BOTH beat me. My "chafe mark" was ugly to say the least. My wife is a runner so I expected her to beat me but my mother in law....I mean come on!

10K? Shit i'm not even big yet and I have permachafe.

Or you could train in progresive fashion in the weight room, full body compound excercises, which is the only way to be an explosive athlete. Throw in a caloric defecit for a while and clean up your diet. Do your cardio and it will be all good.. I dont understand why you couldnt do that. Look good while strength training and cardio as an emphasis.

That is because you are a huge piece of shit and a failure to yourself and everyone around you.

so what about doing overhead squats, one legged squats, plyometrics, and even upper body plyos (i have heard that people have been really successful with these to gain on the bench press).

dude
hold up
first off, you are 45, so kudos to you for lifting as long as you did.

BUT

you are "I am 6'1", 217 now (19%) and my goal is 200 (<15%)" which means you were close to 240lb at 6'1 @ 25* bodyfat, just a guess. thats pretty damn hefty. thats bigger than arnold (230lb competition weight in his prime.) at 5'11 or 6'0 his height. maybe you shouldve layed off the 20 sandwiches and ding dongs cause you were "lifting heavy" and tried to eat more protein and kept ur diet balanced. i am @ 12& BF, i am a heavy lifter, 205lb. and strength lifting actually helps me burn more calories than a 4exercises,4sets, type of workout does.

btw what was your bench at? just curious

good luck with your new style of living.

I was 236 and 24%

Criticism accepted and noted. Fact of the matter is, I've found that running and pushups is a very effective way for me to improve my physique and reduce bodyfat. It began because I was moving and couldn't get to the gym for a few weeks, and I have stuck with the program and I like the results.

Also you guys should keep in mind that much of muscularity comes down to genetics. I know at 6"1'/200/15% I'll have a lean, muscular physique which I'll be quite happy with.

At that time I will re-evaluate my routine
