Nice, cheap, close to NYC cities in NJ?

Im about a half hour away from the city by train, 20 min at 2 am by car. Im in Union County. Theres some nice areas around here but I cant take all the congestion. It takes me almost a half hour to drive to the other side of town in rush hour...Pathetic.

i live in hoboken... i absolutely love it here... the rents are high, but it i feel it is worth it. It is a very safe town and i walk to the path train which gets me in the city in less than 7 minutes. There is no necessary driving, unless i am going down to the shore. Parking is a bitch, but there are buses and trains everywhere. You can find great places and roommates on www.hobokeni.com with the rents so high, you need a roommate. I have a rent control 3 bedroom for $1700 a month which is less than $600 a person... not too bad for boken :) The surrounding areas are union city, west new york (you better speak spanish) north bergen, weehawken, jersey city, bayonne (actually i have a friend that lives there and only pays $700 total for a 2 bedroom) so you just have to start looking around... good luck

Are you going to be working in NYC or are you looking for access to NYC for entertainment? Hoboken and Jersey City are close, PATH trains will take you to the Village, Midtown, and World Trade Center. Buses will take you to Midtown from Hoboken, Jersey City and Blvd. East. Much cheaper on the bus and PATH trains.

Bergen County is nice also-Paramus, River Edge areas. Hackensack is a little cheaper. Bus access only. Lots of gyms in Paramus area-Golds, World, etc.

If you want more specific information-let me know-very familiar with NYC/NJ areas.

Princeton is about ONE HOUR by train....Yes, it is VERY NICE, but 8$...when was that 1940?!! Roundtrip from New Brunswick (2 stops closer to NYC is like 20$ Roundtrip)...of course if you buy a monthly pass it is cheaper...but still 8$?!?! NO WAY.

hmm - I thought I remember it being less. there were different tickets you could get and I could have sworn it was $8 b/c that was before I had a job and was broke at the time and still thought it was reasonable - $20 wouldn't have seemed that way. this was only a few years ago. 2 maybe 3.
but yeah, I really don't recall. and no, it wasn't a month pass for me.

You might want to try Edison/Islin area, it is about 30minutes away by Train, but there are a lot of nice townhouse/ apt communities there.

Also The Wayne area is decent (30 min train).
