I threaded it back on memorial day

first, i kinda knew you were talking about the tank but not sure seeing there is a 14 year wearing a short skirt in the pic

second, what are those tanks bodies made out of, it looks like concrete or something

Very cool pictures. The one with the old man says a lot. Is that a T-34?
a T34/85
the later T34's had their barrels upgraded to 85mm and were longer
a longer barrel allows the shell to build up more velocity and fire a more true arc
hence the later panther with a 75L71 barrel was a better armor piercing gun than the larger tiger 88L56
the second number is the number of barrel widths in length of the gun
so while an 88mm shell has more heft
the 75mm panther gun had more muzzle velocity

the shell builds up more "steam" as it's channeled through a longer barrel

now if you're firing anti-personnel high explosive ammo
larger is better
you want a better burst

firing armor piercing ammo as in tank vs tank
you want your shell traveling fast and true
faster flying shells have a more direct arc and strike with more precise force
like what you need when you want to penetrate thick armor
faster flying shells also suffer less range attentuation
so your killing field is stretched

I recently watched a special on Discovery about M1 Abrams. That is one bad ass piece of machinery.

I'd prefer to arm my troops in an Israeli Merkava over an abrams
the merkava was built with an eye more for crew survivablity and urban functionality

he abrams design focus was to face waves of warsaw pact armor

that's not what's happening now

I agree with rumsfeld in demphasizing heavy armor and go with a more nimble multi-purpose armor articulated force

humvees weren't designed to be APC's
but you can't put every squad in an M1
the Israeli tank is multi-purpose and has the space to transit infantrymen to the combat zone
and the space to function as an emergency hospital unit
the engine is front mounted
the whole backside of a merkava gets shit done

that's what's wierd to me
I know soviet armor and know the periods when the guns were changed
but I see so many variants on the turret molds
the soviets produced T34's from many locations

I think it was mostly pouring steel into a mold particular to location
and marrying the current gun to the chasis

the T34 was a simple design
at their production height the soviets were producing a T34 every 3 minutes
it didn't matter that a platoon of 4 german panthers would stand ground and destroy 40 of 60 attacking T34s

I've read and heard of GI's touring post war germany
they say there would be dozens of knocked out T34's
and then you'd see a panther or two burnt out in a clump of trees

Nice ass, but look at all the crumb crunchers she's trying to rally up.

it wasn't until the last month of the war that the German army broke down
20,000 strong divisions attrited down to 1200 or less continued to fight as cohesive effective units
I LOL at the battle of the bulge
this army fighting for 5 years squeezed on 3 fronts by two superpowers
and they go on the offensive
and achieve a good degree of success
Mantuefels 5th panzer army reached their meuse river objectives

I'd call it an embarrasment

americans mostly ran away
95% of their killing was via artillery and air power

check out dude's dagger up by his neck for quick access

check out the little known movie
when trumpets fade

a sole american survives out of his 40 man platoon
in the battle of the huertgen forest

he's given the command of the new guys
he doesn't want the job
anyhow his fresh platoon is sent out on patrol
he selects a new guy for point
new guy runs into german patrol and takes cover
survives
back at base the sole guy who survived is given shit for not taking point
he replys I need to give these guys the experience
the guy on point who hid from the germans
described it as "like drowning"
he performs well later

is that the tank they dug out of the river/mud this past year??
no I got that
that was actually a captured T34 utilized by the germans (most likely 2nd SS Das Reich-that unit fielded a lot of captured armor)
the tank was intentionally driven into the lake
a young boy witnessed it and years later spoke up
the mud almost entirely preserved it
like no rust wierd

on another note there's much literature about das reich's vicious march through france to get to the invasion beachheads (DDay)
das reich was postioned in southern france to be the strike force should the invasion occur in southern france
of course the french militia knew that
when das reich was ordered to the invasion beaches
the militia struck
capturing german soldiers and dragging then around by car until dead
there's a big story about how the germans rounded up people in a church and burned them alive
it's now known it was the french militia that did that and attached the blame to the germans
anyhow,if you torture a guy in my unit you recieve the full fury

on the balance during the second world war (except for the eastern front)
the Germans were the more correct warriors
there are so many instances of German prisoners executed
in normandy the allies captured a German general
and binded him to the turret of a tank and drove around

in particular general Pattons units killed POWS
and late war Patton executed a high risk deep enemy penetration operation to free his son in law
300 guys died on that op

ok something is wrong here.............we have a pic that shows a chic with a nice legs/ass and a tank............and what wins the discusion.........the tank.......WTF!?!?!?!

just today i was watching the discovery ch about tank restorations, and these billionaires were tank collectors. they were restoring a Germany Panther from ww2. apparently that tank could wipe the field of any allied tank

*Willow makes jack off gesture*

dude people always fight with considerably greater tenacity when it's in defense of their homeland. The "Bulge" counterattack was just an attempt to discourage the allies from attempting to invade Germany.

Ohh, I see I'm supposed to say something like "Damn, I'd hit that!" But then you are going to show me the other side of the chick and tell me she is 14!.

So my offical stance is "No comment" :p

Can you make that gesture a little closer to me please?

That picture of the old dude kneelin on the floor in front of his tank gave me some sort of emotion for some reason...like a breathless few seconds....I find that touching for some reason

depends on the time period
WWII was a constant battle of technology
the germans scored their greatest victories with very inferior armor
the french had much better tanks and just as many if not more than the germans
the germans beat france in 2 weeks (6 weeks total, but it was over in 2)
the german advance on moscow was impressive
Guderian's 2nd panzergruppe advanced faster than the US against Iraq in 2003
against considerably tougher opposition,in rough terrain (not flat desert) with 40s era armor
the soviets had better tanks too
in addition to the heralded T34,they had the KV1 and KV2 monsters
the germans had shit for armor
their best tank was the PZIV and it was a short barreled 75/24 gun mostly designed for bunker busting and firing HE anti-personnel ammo
early '43 the germans started fielding the Tigers
and had the edge tech wise for about 6 months
but I read once the Tiger required 200,000 man hours to produce
and the soviets were making T34s every 3 minutes
late 43 early 44 the german panther made the scene
awesome gun-used sloped armor like the T34 (karma to the person that can explain the advantage of sloped armor)
panther was fast too
that year was when the soviets upgraded the T34 gun from 76mm to 85mm with a longer barrel
but in late '44 and '45 both the soviets and the germans fielded some real monsters
the soviets had the joe stalin 1 and II
and the germans had the jagdpanther, jagdtiger and king tiger (aka as the royal tiger)
the americans had the 90mm pershing late war
the soviet Iosef's had i believe a 120mm gun
the german jagdtiger had 128mm

actually the objective was to envelope the british and the US forces in the north and reach antwerp and cut them off
the rough terrain of the elsenborne ridge was tasked to the SS to take to anchor the offensive
kampfgruppe peiper was the nasty german SS unit that advanced the farthest
but they couldn't capture the fuel dumps and ran out of fuel
got surrounded and peiper's men had to abandon thier eqp. and retreat
the germans tried to use low quality units to clear the elsenborn ridge and that didn't go well
down south mantuefel's 5th panzer army broke through and reached the muese river in multiple places
the meuse river was to be secured to be the barrier in the south for the advance up north

2nvsen6.jpg

see up north the elsenborn area they didn't clear it
it was nasty terrian and would have been a good anchor for the offensive if they cleared it
down south was were the really good penetration was achieved (hence it being known as the battle of the bulge)
the germans hoped to cut the allied front in half and isolate the units in the north
force a decisive defeat
so they could then send their SS and other elite troops back east and deal with the soviets
who were in poland at the time poised on germany's border

german jagdtiger with 128mm gun
the heaviest piece of armor in WWII

The Last Panther in Pomerania

IR Solutions

Nachtsichtgeraten or Infrared night-vision devices is another subject which easily could occupy a lengthy monograph. For the purposes of this article I will again attempt brevity. Germany began research on IR gear in the 30's of which there were two designations: Infrarotstrahlung or IR and Ultrarotstrahlung or UR, the obsolete name for IR. AG and Zeiss (or is it AEG and Leitz, it depends on who translated the text?) were the most senior developers of this equipment and in early 1942 the ZG 1221 solution was tested on a Pak 40 AT gun. With the ever-increasing air superiority of the Allies making daytime travel nearly impossible for panzer units, a great emphasis was placed on the speeding up of the development of the infra-red devices to be used by the Panzertruppe. General Guderian suggested an IR gun sight created for the 75mm Pak ought to be further developed for the Panther as well. A variation of the ZG1221 known as the ZG1221k was fitted to the commander's cupola of Panther turrets by way of a mount installed in the commander's hatchway. The headlamp gave the commander the ability to see ahead of the vehicle approximately 100 meters. By most accounts the range was inadequate and led to the development of an IR observation vehicle known as the "Uhu". Based on a Sd.Kfz.251/20 a 60cm searchlight was mounted in the fighting compartment. During operations one observation vehicle was assigned to a Panther unit comprising five tanks. The visibility range of the infra-red viewer mounted on the Panther was increased to 700 meters through the capability of the Uhu searchlight.

I like your quote Mr. Spartacus... I have always been full of doubt. I don't think Bertrand was actually an athiest, probably an agnostic... Agnostics doubt, athiests are cocksure.

then how was Germany able to
Crush Poland in 4 weeks
parablitz Norway in the face of the Royal Navy in a week
Roll over the netherlands and belgium in a week
basically defeat France, which had as many tanks as Germany of far better quality,in 2 weeks
roll over Jugoslavia and Greece in a couple weeks

reach the gates of Moscow against a far numerically advantaged opponent, that like France had far superior armor

all defending their homeland
and they all faced one front of attack

Germany had two superpowers and the British Commonwealth against them on 3 fronts

and it took until mid 1945 to defeat Germany

people schooled on the european front of WWII pretty much acknowledge the German army was and still remains the most professionally skilled army of modern times

against Russia, Guderian's 2nd panzergruppe advanced faster, against considerable opposition,in rough terrain with 40s era equipment
than the US did against Iraq in 2003
