newbie needing help with close grip bench.

I tried this today, and it seemed too much like flat bench.

When I flat bench, the inside of my hands line up with the outside of my shoulders. Then on the way down, I tuck my elbows(feels better on my shoulder).

-is this technique more like a cg?

It feels like the same exact lift?

What am I doing wrong?

dude you should always try to tuck your elbows even on regular flat bench (it will save you shoulder injuries)

try moving your hands in a little more... basically when I do them my arms/forearms/wrists move right up against the sides of my chest/torso (straight up and down movement)... I am a decently big guy and my first finger (pointing finger) is either the only one on the smooth part of the bar, or right on the edge of the knurling next to the smooth part...

I don't know your shoulder width and arm length so I can't compare with mine but. I do regular bench with my middle fingers on the rings. Cg I do with my thumbs touching the inside of the knurling where the bar goes smooth. That is about a 5-6" difference. I would suggest working your normal flat grip out some and your cg in just a little so it is barely inside your shoulder span.

Cheers,
Scotsman

When I flat bench...I put my pinky on the power rings. When I close grip...I put my thumbs on the smooth.

bring the bar lower on your torso causing your elbows to also be lower.

not only bring the bar lower (to bottom of sternum) but also keep elbows close to your sides... so that your torso and arms to the elbows looks like this: /I\

and not like this: T

this is with boards, but you get the idea...
