That's why you crack it open and switch the guts. But I'd recommend doing the switcheroo thing at a big retail store that's not really paying close attention to returns like Target or Walmart.
On the new one you buy, when removing the void stickers, fill in the clear "void" letters with a permanent marker and then stick back on when you are complete..
switch the guts but keep the original case, the case has the serial # and they check the serial # when you buy it and return it.. The serial # is on the receipt.
i've been looking into buying a PS2 and i was thinking of getting a used one. but since there are so many problems with the used ones, would you guys say that it's a better idea to get a brand new one?

So its fuckers like you that make my job have shitty pay eh? I hate fucking people... why can they not treat the rentals as they would their own shit... we get games/dvd's back from the first renters, and they already are scratched to fuck.. Mother Fuckers, they should all fucking die.
that's what i thought, but i also checked a few stores which sell used systems and they assured me that they test them thouroughly before selling them.
i was hoping to buy more games with the money i save with the used PS2
btw, does anyone know if the software versions can be upgraded?
