Need help with my PS2! "disk read error"

I brought a PS2 yesterday and as I put a DVD inside I get a message "disk read error". I tried opening it but I cant, I took out all of the screws but theres something holding it together that I cant find!!

any suggestions??

is it a preowned ps2? if so, they were prolly sellin it for a reason.

if it is preowned, do you know if it's got a modchip in it?

is the front dust cover on the tray taken off? (if theres no multicolored P on the front then you know it's taken off)

Is the DVD new or scratched up?

was the black sticker still attached to the ps2 before you tried taking it apart?

Yeah it was from a second hand joint, but they are supposed to be tested and in working order.
There is no multicoloured P on the top. But the DVD is in good condition and the black sticker is still on it.

Not sure about MOD chip, im having troubles even opening it!!

A lot of PS2s have faulty drives in them. After a certain amount of time, some of them stop reading blue-bottom discs, some stop reading silver-bottom discs, others stop reading DVDs. Sony knows about the problem. Return your machine.

There was a rumor going around for a while that there was a defect in certain generations of PS2's. Sony has never acknowledged it, but it would cause the system to not read DVD movies or games.

I had the same problem with mine, but it was from being knocked onto the floor. :(

If you call Sony, and give them story about how it's never worked, and you've read about defects on the web, blah blah blah, they'll repair it for half the cost, or about $60.

if the front cover is missing off the disk drive (meaning when the tray is closed you can see a horizontal slit into the machine, therefore theres' no cover with the multicolored P on it) Then chances are someone was using a swap trick/knife technique on it and went a little too rough perhaps and killed the laser somewhat. I use this method to play my backups. You don;t have to install a chip, just take the front dust cover off the tray, and buy a gameshark, and do some twiddling around with a small knife type tool through the slit where the cover used to be and you're good to play some backups and all ps1 games.

i've been looking into buying a PS2 and i was thinking of getting a used one. but since there are so many problems with the used ones, would you guys say that it's a better idea to get a brand new one?

I opened it up and tried cleaning the laser and now the DVD drive wont eject, looks like I fucked it up even more. Im going to take it back were I brought it and get those bums that sold me a busted up PS2 to fix it..
