need everyone's help with board presses

where do you think you should bench when going for a 1 rep max and a 3 rep max.

do you think you should train closer, or bench where your competition grip is???...im not sure on what wsb or MM preaches. but im just curious to see what you guys do.

if your going to max out on a board press, is it at the same grip you do a full rom bench press, or is the grip different???

also, does your grip change depending on what board your using???...ie. 2,3,4,5 board??

and please list reason why.

thanks,

X

with boards i go med. grip.

i train all 3 grips (not quite to comp width though) on speed day.

i prefer med grip because i will still be using tons of tricep, its easier on my wrists, and when it comes time to max out, that slight change in grip width makes it feel much easier. the weights i would handle with the closer grip on a lower board press is almost equivalent to my new bench max when i widen my grip. IMO.

Metal Militia:
train boards with pinkies on rings
train CG Bench with pinkies on rings
train Lockouts with pinkies on rings
train full ROm bench competition grip with index on rings

so where do you define medium grip.

this goes for others who respond as well, where do you put you hands......... your height too.

wow............ thats my widest grip except when i max, so that hard to think of as a close grip!?!?!

med grip to me is hands midpoint on the inside knurling between the rings. im 5 9btw. "wide to me is pinkies on the ring, close is index finger on the beginning of the knurling. comp grip that i like is middle finger on the rings.

I did board presses for the first time last night, and used my normal bench grip: pinkies on the rings. Just my preference though.

same here, only comp grip is middle finger on the rings - im 5'8

basically, the more ROM i use on boards, the wider my grip.

Depending on what we're doing, we've done board presses with comp grip, pinkies on the rings, and close grip...just kinda depends.

Ex, you might want to post this on the powerlifting board. The hardcore guys are over there.

And if I got my comments wrong about grip, please let me know.

nah.......... i only post here. not there is anything wrong with that forum, i just know and trust the folks that post here.

Project, im talking about on ME upper body day. i always do 1 exercise for a 1 rep max. and another for a 3 rep max next. i do 2-5 boards for the 2 exerices sometimes.

i normally use a med grip (thumbs touching the smooth) but im just wondering should i use a wider grip so i can lift more weight???

When I do speed, and I do 8 x 3 full ROM, I do 3 close, 2 medium, and 2 wide.

When I do boards I do close grip or comp...I have a set of records for each grip for each board.

For maxing out, I use the grip that gives me the biggest number (index in the ring).

If I am doing the move for tricep work, I do a clos-er) grip.

gotcha............ see im doing it for a max effort movement, but i think i got into doing them this close becuase of help with ohp. do you think, since im focusing on bench at the moment that i should just use a wide grip and go for the big numbers???

i use a wide-grip currently because of my shoulder. my max bench i around 505 and my 4-boards are 485 and 3-boards are 465. just to give ya an idea. i use the same grip on all boards. you could check out the training article MM has on their site. tb

If you are doing it or a big bench, and you bench more wide, then yes.

Excuse me?

On topic:
Modified WSB; 5'9"

I vary my grip width for board presses depending on my target goal. Narrower the grip, the more focus on tri's for me. The widest I go is pinky right next to the rings. Any wider feels unatural for me.

For me, if my focus was to increase my bench press, I would my 1RM lifts at the same grip as my competition bench.
If my goal was to increase my OHP, I would narrow the grip.

IMHO.:)

yea. that's shirted brotha. we're still hookin up for shirt work and if you get one, you can train with me and jon on shirt day. tb

i do most of my board work with a close grip or my OHP grip. no need to go any wider...for me anyway

When i do get a shirt i will come down and train with you brute.

hey joker, i wonder if that was the reason why my ohp has been shooting up so much, and my bench going up, but not as much. i think i will switch to pink on the rings and work there for this next cycle to increase my bench.

I don't know what exactly to get; but... I do recommend an open-backed shirt, whatever you do. My limited experience w/closed-back polys told me that I don't want to take 10 minutes and make 2 people put the shirt on me, when I could have an open back and get it on with one other person in a minute.

thanks bud, i will remember that when i purchase on.

i agree and disagree with cuthbert. i agree that getting open-backed is better because it helps with puttin it on easier but most open-backed shirts are for lifters with elbow-in benchers. i disagree because there quite a lot you can learn from closed-back shirts so i wouldn't single those out either. i would recommend getting either the beginner's inzer shirt or the heavy-duty blast shirt to get used to them. or you can get the titan fury which is great. i would recommend double-denim but most lifters would rather you have some experience with shirt before going to double-denim...its the same with canvas equipment as well. the metal bench shirts would be good choice. tb

I do all of mine with a mid grip...to assist my overhead press the most.

Close, mid, wide...sounds like a good way to set 3 different PR's :)

thanks bfold.

the thing is this, you told me about why you use the med grip, for ohp, which i will agree, up untill 6 months ago, 195 was the most weight i ever had over my head, now im push jerking over 250+ so i know this was the reason.

but i belive i will do the powerlifting contest that cuthbert does in nashville in December. so i was just trying to see if wider would be better for bringing up my bench. i think your right b, i will go wide for a while, and then after this next 12 weeks is up i will switch up some grips.

brute, you and i think a lot a like in shirts. i did want to get a double denim to start, but then i thought i might need to start in a poly. i do bench elbows in though, so maybe i should look into an open back one. i dont know if that Metal one is or not, are any of the ones you suggested open back????
