Karma hits for all responses.

Okay you techies out there. This is a simple task, right? I want an out of the box PC. I'm not a gamer, but I do want something that's got good components. Believe me when I tell you, I get my money's worth out of a computer, this bitch has to have legs (considering the one I'm using now is over 11 years old ...)

I need to be able to run office applications and I'd like to be able to watch videos on YouTube and download music. Normal Mom shit, y'know?

So the real question is, HP, Gateway, Dell, Acer, or some other brand I didn't notice on the MicroCenter shelves :whatever:

And, no, I can't do a lot of internet surfing to seek out computer reviews myself. Norton just stopped supporting my virus software, the fuckers, so I'm in a bit of a hurry.

TIA :)

If I tell you what parts to buy can you put it together? If not try tigerdirect.com or newegg.com they have good PCs nag for the book, just look for this:

Windows 7 NOT Vista
At least 2 GB ram that show DDR2 or DDR3
At least a 100GB Hard Drive
Optical/CD drive is up to you, basic DVD +/- RW should do the trick
Make sure the PC has integrated video, you can later add an external video card if you need more power
Sound can be onboard, it's good enough, dont worry about that
Dual Core/Core2Duo or better

Good Luck ^_^

Thanks for your suggestions, hun. We've come up with a workable solution, hubby will hand me down his current PC, which is XP, and he'll get a new computer which his son (who is a tech head) will help him pick out. I'm so over fucking with computers it ain't funny, seriously. Can't stand the g'damned things anymore. I finally understand why my husband told me when we first got together, "NEVER get me a tool for a gift." He feels about wrenches the way I do about a keyboard.

Y'know what's funny? I have a degree in computer programming ... granted, earned it about 17 years ago, but mainframe programming, Assembler, Cobal and OS-JCL.

That and $3.75 will buy me a cup of coffee *sigh*

Tell him you want Windows 7 installed on this machine he's giving you

also go to crucial.com once it's set up and download their memory tester.
Than upgrade to at least 2-3gb

This is the computer my husband is getting. Newegg.com - iBUYPOWER Gamer Power 528 Athlon II X4 620(2.6GHz) 4GB DDR2 500GB ATI Radeon HD 4670 Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit - Desktop PCs

I'm getting his old XP machine, which is plenty to run my word processing programs, spreadsheet, and surf the internet.

Shit, the only reason I have to upgrade at all is because Norton locked me up. I had Norton 2004, which was totally happy until the last time I ran the weekly liveUpdate. Then it shut me down, telling me the trial period is expired and I need to register. It won't take the numbers, I am forced to admit surrender :whatever:

I've been running on borrowed time, anyway. I mean, seriously, this computer is 11+ years old.

First of all FVCK NORTON! All you need as AVAST home edition or AVG free for anti-virus. They are better than norton IMO.
Good luck with the new computer!

Hello, well would be nice if You can get a new computer, I would prefeer Dell You can customize it online and with good warranty plus some other services. But if You want to keep the one with Xp it's ok, just install the AVG free as antivirus plus install the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (Malwarebytes.org) it's free also and both will keep Your computer without a virus and running ok.

Regards,

JessE

My son recommended the AVG too (he's going to school for video game design and working in the field now so I kind of trust him). My husband has to do what he is comfortable with.

There are only about three things my husband and I ever fight about. Since we both have a background in computer programming, the care and feeding of the PC is one of them. You know how most men won't go in their wives purses without permission, and then only if absolutely necessary? Yeah, that's how we are with each others computers. It's safer that way. There is no such thing as the "family computer" in my house.
