Need a new computer, what brand should I avoid...emachines??

I need something fairly cheap since I strip parts off of an old computer.

I've only had dell, gateway and this piece of shit that I built my self.

Heard bad shit about compaq, and don't know anything about emachines.

have fun talking to Habib if your Dell craps out.

Have fun trying to find any tier one vendor who doesn't out-source tech support .

On the server said I know for sure they are.
Desktops, I think they are. I could be wrong.

We have a disk image stored with Dell that they use for all of our desktop orders.

exactly. they're all doing it now.

Code, is Dell offering any machines with Linux yet?

I would LOVE to get that $499 special you quoted. (I'm assuming that without monitor?), but I'd also want to be able to get support for it with the OS of my choice, but would be SuSE Linux. I use a Dell here at work which is amazing quiet (I swear I thought the case fan had burned out!), but regularly has problems communicating with the LAN and every effing time it has been Windows, not the hardware.

So don't buy from a tier one vendor. Unless you're getting a hundred or more the benefit is little. Your local mom & pop computer store can build one for near the same price WITH English speaking tech support.

That price includes LCD monitor.

Buying a copy of SUSE 9.1 comes with 1 year tech support.

I've looked into the little guys DT and they cannot compete on the prices, at least not anymore. You can even build your own box, comparable equipped, for the prices the big guys are offering. My dad built our first several computers, but now buys them for that very reason.

Most local shops are usually dealing in grey-market chipsets and black-market OS licenses.

And they simply can't beat the deals tier 1 vendors give out.

I can build a box similiar to the Dell 2400n that we buy for about $500. A motherboard with integrated video, sound & ethernet knocks off $200 right there.

Dell Dimension 2400
2.4Ghz Celeron
XP Home
256mg RAM
17in LCD flat screen

For 399.00

You can shave 200 off that price??

No he cant, no independant or end user could. That price is unbelievable. I think Dell is trying to murder the comp by selling at a loss or zero profit.

If you have a little computer knowledge best to just by I white box a lot easier to fix if something craps out. Name brand computers are just not worth it as most white boxs are made with all the same parts as the name brands.

For starters post a link to that price.

I'm a laptop fan, but depending on your budget get a MacG5 - thing is lightning-fast.
I've also had a delightful experience with using a dual-G5 - the thing is fk'n unparalelled in terms of pricing and performance :o

$399 w/o monitor is a long way from $299 w/17" LCD. We've standardized on 2400n's (n meaning no OS) in the office and I know that price you mentioned is unobtainable. Even their current 'free flat panel monitor' offer excludes the 2400 w/Celeron.

don't fuck around with a piece fo shit celeron

Dimension 3000
P4-2.8Ghz Desktop
256MB DDR400
80GB
48x CDRW
Ethernet
modem
Word Perfect
XP Home
2yr warranty
$379 after $150 rebate

15" lcd is $100 more

Then you need a new dell rep and prolly should browse the links I provided.

We buy 1200 new PCs each year, and I regularly get them for under 300 w/15 LCD monitor.

It's not easier when you can't figure out WTF is wrong with it.

I have a pretty good knowledge(A+ certification) and I cannot for the life of me figure out what is wrong with this piece of shit.

If you call IBM tech support, your call goes to Atlanta, where you are likely to find someone who is a native English speaker.

I agree w/ Devastation.

Get either a Pentium or AMD Athlon processor....

Brand of computers: go with the established companies like Dell, CompaqHP, Sony etc..
