My puppy is hurt

Hey everyone,

Okay, I'm trying not to freak out. It's really not a big deal but:

Yesterday my 5 year old Aussie came in bleeding like a pig. I cleaned him up and it turns out he broke one of his nails. Well today he's limping and licking his paw.

Should I take him to the vet, or should I just chill out. I have spent so much money on my animals already this year. I don't think I can afford it, but I will do it, if you guys think it's necessary. So what do you think?

You shouldnt have bought an animal that you can't afford. Find another owner if you are going to cut corners. If it is injured, and if it was "bleeding like a pig" then take him to the hospital, before I call PETA on you. As a future tip, the animal will cost more money as the time goes on. It will eat more, require more health visits and etc.

LawJIgga.

Fine choice of animals. Australian Shepherds have been the most intelligent animals I have ever had. He deserves a visit to the Vet IMO.

LawJIgga,

Dude what's up with the hostility? First of all I am not cutting corners. I have spent over 10K on my animals this year alone. If you know anything about animals, when their nails get nicked they bleed like crazy. I am going to call the vet tomorrow. It's Sunday dude, he's not even in. You don't have to be such a jerk. And you can call PETA if you like. They will give me the owner of the year award for rescuing 4 animals off the street.

You might want to wrap his paw up and make sure that it doesn't get dirty. He should be ok as long as he's not bleeding.

Hi,

Thanks guys. No it happened yesterday afternoon. He's not bleeding anymore. He's just licking it. I've been keeping it clean. He seems to be okay, but I'm like a nervous wreck with them. We lost one of our cats last August to FIP. Every since then I watch all of them like hawks.

Hansel,

Yeah, he is so awesome. He's the smartest pup in the world, and the sweetest. We have cats and he is so awesome with them. If they play wrestle, he gets so agiatated and he always breaks it up, it's so cute. We were just at the vet 2 saturdays ago. He gets really bad allergies this time of year. So I kinda feel bad bringing him there again. He had to get a cortizone shot and he wasn't happy at all. :bawling:

They have a great temperment around Kids and other animals. They cooperate with people so well its scary. Mine had allergy problems as well, but when we moved to AZ it was so dry it cleared up.
Heres a pic of one of old friends....

The only reason he's limping and licking is because it's irritated. I don't think there should be a big concern, unless the nail has been physically pulled out. Even in that case, if it's no longer bleeding, it should be OK, otherwise he might need a stitch or two. From what you have explained, I really don't think it will be a big problem.

Good call, dogs will lick a wound and not let it heal sometimes so if you dont take him in you may want to wrap it up.
