My proposal for a NEW BOARD POLICY...

I don't know how this will go over, but here goes...

Maybe I am pretentious, as I insist upon using proper grammar in any written or verbal communication I partake in. I don't think everyone should be a dork like me in this respect.

However, I think some of the sloppy ass posts that people shoot off on this board really need to be regulated on...

I am just tired of trying to decipher what the hell people are trying to say. I'm not talking about a misspelled word here and there... I'm talking about the people who post in an erratic, stream of consciousness manner, as if they never learned what a fucking period is.

It's just annoying as hell to me...

I think if a Mod encounters a post that he/she thinks is incoherent, then they should ask the author to immediately clean it up and make it readable...then, if the author doesn't comply soon, the Mod should delete it.

I just think this would help promote EF as a forum of learning and exchange of ideas, frequented by relatively intelligent people, and as well reduce a lot of the boards clutter.

What do you all think?

JJ

bro the sad thing is that we have a spell check with post ya know. i know its sad but rue and i dont think your idea will go too far, good idea though.

I agree, it's annoying, and an even worse reflection of whatever schooling system said person was spat out of(Opps, did I end that sentence w/ a preposition???:D;). It's a grin & bear it thing though bro. What can ya do?!

BTW...how did that UPS delivery go?

I'm not sure yet... it's being held for pickup. I'll know on Monday... I think it'll be fine.

I think you need to stop ending your sentences in prepositions, work on syntax and maybe review your use of commas. J/K

Good point, though. I don't understand why so many posts are either written in some sort of new age Ebonics or with a paucity of vowels.

Also... I forgot to add... I think that those EF members who do not speak English very well should get the fuck out of here because this is an American board.

J/K...

I think that those who have English as their second language should be given some latitude in this respect. Those whose primary language is ebonics do not qualify under these terms.

Why don't we see if Hitler is available to moderate the board, sounds like the two of you would get along great!:nopity:

I like the way you talked about being anal regarding proper grammar, then ended your first sentence with a preposition (instead of saying "... in which I partake."). As if this wasn't pure cash money in and of itself, you then used 'on' in the context of 'regulated', when the sentence would have been fine without the extra 'on'.

I'm not trying to be a prick - I'm just busting your balls a little bit, JJ... hope you can laugh at it and don't take any offense (since that's not my intent).

I agree that sometimes people can get really out of hand when it comes to retarded posting, but I don't think the mods can really double as grammatical editors with the sheer volume of post traffic on the board.

Noble idea, though.

Have a good one,
-M

I agreeyz wit you on this won. i to am sic of this abyooz of da english languge its like some of these foos aint done finished they're 6th graid
(dam, I jest ran the spel check and my cumputer crashed)

Seriously, it does bother me a bit as well. But, unfortunately, we are surrounded by them not only in here, but in society in general. Hang in there my educated brothers and try not to let it get to ya too much.

Locking or wacking posts for bad grammer is a little extreme. And the whole idea that this board is just for Americans makes no sense at all. (Why would your board profile give you the option to add your country's flag to your posts if they only expected US participation?)

A constructive suggestion would be for the board owner to give users the ability to edit their own posts "after" they hit the submit. (Lots of other message boards do this). I often see mistakes that I overlooked during initial entry, but there's no way to correct them after the post is made.

Sounds like a good idea on paper, but then again communism sounds like a good idea on paper.

It would be nice if it would work, but I don't see it happenining.

no offence, but i think its a stupid idea. this is a damm discusion board. i cant spell worth a crap, and id be pissed if i had a mod pm everytime i misspelled a word.
if you have trouble readin a post, then dont, move on.

You can edit your posts after you make them. To my knowledge, this is not a platinum feature, as I am not platinum and I edit my posts all the time.

If you read my post you will see that I am not talking about occasional spellings mistakes... I am talking about the long, jumbled, and unintelligible posts that pervade this board.

I guess the stereotype about muscle heads being idiots is true.

Is it really that hard to go back over your post and make sure it makes sense? You'll get many more responses if you do.

I just ignore the posts with atrocious grammar. I figure it's reflective of what little thought they put into it.

Not a bad Idea. I really dislike when some white bread kid talks (types) a bunch of ebonic :"Bling Bling" bullshit. I have black friends who think this is idiotic and also disrespectuful. Please lets stick to proper grammer.

Isn't ebonics a recognized language? I follow your logic here but however well-intentioned it is it will NEVER happen. It's full time job for the Mods to monitor source posts and off-topic threads let alone be the grammer police.

BTW, you did end your sentences with prepositions, which is improper English...haha :D

JJ, what do you think of these? They're from a while back. I really can't talk, however, as I've been getting very lazy with capitalization as of late. Oh well, these were some of my favorites...

JibbyJabba, I counted nine errors in grammar and punctuation in your post. How many errors should you be allowed before we ask the Mods to delete your post?

I couldn't resist.

Truth of it is - I would be against this policy. You are bright and well educated. Not everyone has that advantage, and not everyone speaks English as their primary language. I can't stand lazy posters, but I'm willing to cut a lot of slack for guys who had to work hard just to bring home a "D" in high school English.

In my 20s I used to date a girl who was a literature professor in Colorado. She was major busy, handled several classes. The only way for us to get free time together sometimes was for me to go over to her house and grade her class papers together.

It was actually pretty hillarious. We'd spend about three hours grading papers infront of the fireplace, circling puntuation errors and misspellings, drinking wine, eating cheese and bread, then as soon as the stack of papers was done her clothes came flying off. She was a brilliant woman with priorities.

I don't think an autobiography entry of "... graded papers then boinked sexy college professor..." is going to garner many readers. Correcting papers isn't exciting literary foreplay.

Nice catch... I deserved a good ball breaking after the shit I was giving you yesterday.

I should never have used the phrase "proper grammar." I just mean that posts should be, at the very least, coherent. I don't want to make EF a forum where only pretentious types could post...

I think that even someone who brings home a "D" in high school English should be able to make a post that can be read...but that is just my opinion. The thing is, the majority of unintelligible posts are probably not made by uneducated individuals...just lazy individual. Furthermore, if you can't construct a sentence, I don't think you should do AS or give people adivce on AS.

ok let me tell youz guyz a lil sum sumn......dis is da way we-z speak here yo....:fro: gramma aint got shit on me!!! i think we be wastin too much time on dis subjec......peace out fizzle dizzle;)

Great examples!

There was one the other day that was absolutely unbelievable... I am going to try and find it. It was like a retarded chimp was mashing the key board and somehow the words "cyp" and "deca" got thrown in there.

I agree it is a pain in the ass. It's understandable if you misspell a word or two but come on, some of these posts you can't understand what the fuck they're even trying to say. But I don't think they should be banned for it. Just ignored.

you know, it must be beacuse im a high school drop out, but i have hardly ever had a problem readin a post, with the exception to guys who barley speak english, and when some of you hop on here and post when your drunk. but even those can be cool to read.

There really is not point of this thread (no disrespect JJ).

THe site can not regulate how people type or what is going on with them, etc. While I agree that some people should really think before the post, I see a lot of vets and people who type well that shouldn't post at all.

One word - Tolerance.

As a site we need to tolerate all sorts of people. Things are not always going to go our way, and thats just the way it is. Maybe next time you cant read someones post you will send them a PM and politely tell them the problem.

What I see happening more often than not are people being rude to these people which then gets everything all blown out of proportion.

Nobody should ever be scared to post, especially a newbie. We were all newbies at one point and more of us should remember that when we go to respond to people. Follow this simple rule. "Stop, think, then reply". Make sure you are posting a response that would be how you would want to be responded to if you were in that persons shoes.

Peace and respect.

There is actually a point to this thread and it's very clear. Just because you don't agree with it doesn't mean there isn't a point.

kronk said:

Yes it can. Mods are allowed to arbitrarily decide when a topic has sufficiently wandered off topic to warrant locking the thread. Why can't a mod make a similar decision with regard to the readability of a post and lock/delete accordingly if the author doesn't fix it? It's completely feasible.

kronk said:

This is not an argument against my position at all. In fact, it supports my point exactly... I never singled out newbies. This problem is not peculiar to those new to EF - it's rampant among Vets as well. I think everyone, mods and newbies alike, should have to make posts that are coherent.

kronk said:

It's one thing to tolerate ignornant people and help them learn... it's another thing to tolerate lazy people who treat this forum like a joke where they can make unintelligible posts with impunity. EF needs to have some damn standards...we're not a "trailer park" board as EF Sam would say.

kronk said:

Why don't you Mods do it? If they don't take your suggestion, then you can delete the thread. One of your concerns is with board clutter... this gives you another way to get rid of extraneous threads.

kronk said:

If unreadable posts are deleted, then there will be less of an opportunity for people to be rude to the authors.

People are always going to be rude to and make fun of the authors of unreadable posts... this is not going to change and if you think it will your being waty too ideal.

Again... a newbie can ask the most ignorant question in the world, but do so in a clear and concise manner. This is not about newbies and vets... this is about people respecting EF enough to read over their posts and make them readable before actually clicking on "submit."

JJ,
There is plenty of bad english and inappropriate grammar around the board, but this is true with every board. I know where you are coming from and I ignore posts which make little or no sense to me. I don't think your idea will become a new board policy, because the Mods are already busy stopping source posts and inappropriate threads etc...

A "green card" or Border Crossing Card...hey actually a Border Crosser Card would be quite a popular guy around here.

I am locking this as it is not going anywhere at all. A couple of mods made great responses, but there is no pleasing everyone. The mods have it right here and this whole thread is silly. Please refrain from starting things that cant be finished on a discussion board.

If you want to make suggestions, feel free to send them to our support email. Thank you.
