Poor thing!! She's continued peeing in various places.....I've had a 55gal plastic bag taped to the floor covered with newspaper for a while.....

But now, she's stopped eating.....I've been feeding her wet food for quite a long time & tried giving her tuna, etc..... I don't think she's eaten for about 2 days now & she's skin & bones....

Still roaming the house moaning & crying.... poor kitty..... this week might be the week I have to put her to sleep..... I'm sad.... :( I've never had to put a pet to sleep before and I feel guilty for considering it, but I think it may be time..... the way she's moaning seems to me that she might be in pain, etc...

She's lived a lot longer than she was going to -- I got her when she was 7 & the people she lived with previously were going to put her to sleep cuz she scratched their kid.... Now she's about 21 or so...

Um. Take her to the vet?

Um, I will........ but there isn't really anything they could do for her due to how old she is.... her kidneys are failing, she's half deaf & half blind and she weighs about 2 lbs now..... The average age of a housecat is 18 & she's about 21....

Here she is before she lost so much weight & on a good day:

21! Damn thats ancient in cat terms. Time to let go J.

That sucks. I have 2 cats, one of which is 5 and he had to get a cancerous lump removed last month. Good luck to you. :(

Yeah, that's what I was thinking....... but I'm finding it hard to let go.... she's my lady......

It's hard watching her deteriorate..... poor girl...

She is probably Suffering...

As sad as it sounds, putting her to sleep may be the best thing you can do for her.
Letting her suffer is the worst..

She's an ancient lady! All of my cats over the years have lasted around 18-19 years. The current one is just a whippernsnapper at 13. I feel you tho -- I think about what he's meant to me over the years and what will happen as he gets older. But if they are in pain, the most loving thing you can do for them is end it. But the hard part is determining when that is.

Poor kitty :( Poor Jen :( But lots of love :rose:

Thanks for all the kind words...... I'm looking up some info on the internet & I just started crying!! I just petted her & all I can feel is bones -- she just wanders the house moaning pitifully..... I tried hand-feeding her & she won't eat.....

I think I need to make the call....

Just called the vet & you make an appt. which you get usually same day.... $92 to kill my beautiful lady then another $70-$150 to cremate her either in a group or privately, depending on whether I want the ashes or not....

Tonite might be a drinking nite...

Your cat lived a good life - let her take the final step over the bridge...Vets are very sensitive, will give you time and will let you hold the cat when he does his job.

My cat Fatass is 16 this year - I know she only has a couple of good years left. That is how it goes.

Good luck,

Bluesman

i got a 10.6 cent bullet that'll get the job done.

or you could wait til next week when i have the AK and the rounds are 8.5 cents each.

you know i'm not serious.

it's time Jen. Don't let the cat suffer any longer. not fair to the cat. do what's right for the cat.

went with a friend to get his dog put down. dog had terminal cancer. he was young too, maybe 7 or 8 at the oldest. they tried numerous times to beat it but nothing short of a miricle was going to save the dog. he was pretty torn up afterwards, so we drove around for an hour or so and i got him extremely stoned and we listened to Primus at full tilt. i even hugged him, then we both looked at each other and said "that's gay" and agreed not to do it again.

I found some info on the 'net, which made me cry for quite some time..... A site on pet bereavement, with ? on when it's time -- and how my cat is -- she's fits many of the criteria for euthanasia.....

I also found a web site that will engrave a garden stone for you with whatever you want it to say..... I think I'll buy one for my yard with her name on it -- may help me grieve....

One "benefit" of her being gone will be that my home will be open to another cat that so desperately needs a home....

Thanks Y!!

I like the stone that's says "Wilma: Beloved Cat" on it....Of course, I'll order it with my cat's name....

Jen- I know it is extremely difficult but you need to end your cat's suffering. Keeping a pet alive just so you feel better about yourself is much worse than the few moments it takes at the vet. I know we become overly attached to animals and they to us, and it is hard to let go, but that time has come. She can no longer enjoy life but is stuck in a prison of misery that you can release her from. This takes strength and dedication to the spirit of your cat. Just the same as it took strength and dedication to keep her warm, feed her, play with her, and let her simply be a cat. Part of pet ownership is to ensure the best for your pet and sometimes the best is to let them go, this is the part no one ever wants to think about and most deny. You have to think of what's best for her and not what's going to be painful for you. Best of wishes to you in this.

You're welcome. This is a sensitive issue with me as I know a lot of people who hold on too long, and I feel so very bad for the animals.

I'm so sorry to hear that Jen. That's such a hard choice but ti sounds like your cat has been a wonderful friend to you for a long time. I like the idea of the stone for the yard. Where did you find it?

I'm wrestling with putting one of my ferrets down right now. She needs a $700 surgery, she's blind, she's old for a ferret, and she's breaking my heart. It's hard to see such an important part of your life get sick. *hugs*

Here's the website....

http://www.oldworldstones.com/

It's looking like I'll be making the appt. to have her put down tomorrow nite....

I've seen some references as to "crossing the Rainbow bridge" and that sounds so much better....

I think there's a rainbow bridge website too where you can post a picture and a tribute to the pets you've lost. It's really heartbreaking for any pet-lover to go through.

The cremation thing is a good way to go afterwards. We had that done with our dog. Kind of funny but when the lady brought him back the ashes were in a little box that she had "gift wrapped" with a bow and everything. Kind of made us all laugh that our old fat dog was now a present. Anyway we buried the box under our apple tree that he layed under for most of his life.

I don't know if I want to bring the ashes home with me or not..... it's $150 for that.... the cost isn't a big deal, but I don't have anywhere to bury it & don't know if I want to keep them in an urn or whatever....

Find a place that you really like to that is outdoors and spread the ashes if you are looking for something to do with them. If you don't want to bring them home just think of them as being in a better place.

Wow sorry, thats always a terrible thing to go thru. We have sooooo many animals. All of them are small tragedies waiting to happen. One of my great danes died a couple years ago--I cried my fuking eyes out. I told myself Id never get another........well theres SirBoo outback who is a near duplicate. Why I put myself thru this hell I dont know.

Awwwwww, rsnoble..... I've never had to put a pet to sleep before, so this'll be my first..... it's a hard decision to make.... My cat is the same age as your Muffin.....she stopped eating recently....poor thing...Can't tempt her with anything...

Aww Jen, I am so sorry to hear that. I know it is hard. I havent had to do it, but I can imagine. It is the right thing to do. Good luck to you hun. :rose:

Very nice cat. She could have diabetes or a thyroid problem. Our cat has a thyroid problem. Their father died at about 18yrs old last year & their mother died this past year so that could've caused some depression.

You should certainly take your cat in for blood work. I hope she's okay.

^^ My 10yo cat had radiation in Oct. cuz she had a thyroid problem, so I'm familiar with the disorder....

But this one is 21 + years old....she's too old to be able to take the meds or treatment, plus her kidneys are going, she's half blind & deaf, etc....

Yeah, shouldve done that with my dane. Had to dig a hole 6' long and 5' deep. That was a long, long day.

Yeah it was mid winter on our dog so we could barely dig a hole deep enough for the box through the frozen tundra.
