I've used that expression...I think it makes sense personally...and gives emphasis that you really had absolutely no intent of wrongdoing.

honest mistake - a mistake that is made with no wrongdoing or bad intentions ; unlike a mistake that is made because of being in a hurry, or laziness or deceit
 
Someone doing something on purpose like they don't like a co-worker or company. Oh wait everyone's said this already 5 times! dammit.

I think it often means: "I don't believe myself to be as generally incompetent as I'm feeling right now." Deflecting an uncomfortable situation with popular humor.

if you're doing your ABSolute best and you still drop the ball. . .that's an "honest mistake". if you're doing a half-assed job and you f-up. . .that's not an honest mistake.

i don't make up the rules. . .i just try to live with them :whatever:
