My elbows hurt

Recently my elbows have started hurting a LOT when I do skullcrushers or overhead tricep presses.

My form is pretty strict, I can do other tricep exercises (like close grip bench) with no problems.

WTF is wrong? I've stopped doing skullcrushers for now, and am about to forego overhead tricep presses for... cables or something.

Does anyone else have elbow problems? What did you do?

make sure:
1) bring the bar past your forehead on the way down.
2) keep your elbows stable, ie dont move them at all when you push the bar up.

Maybe a joint problem.

Try some glucosamine sulphate in your diet. It comes in tablet form from health food stores and is fairly cheap. It takes about 4 weeks to start working but it will keep your joints strong.

This is rather debilitating. It happened to me last year to the point where if I touched my elbow it hurt. Heavy presses and skulls will have a punishing effect on the joints, no doubt. Now I do skulls 2nd or 3rd in my workout. I sbegin w/ a compound movement to warm my tris up like Close grip presses.

The rational is that the compound movement will not force 100% of the load onto your tris. This will allow for a more gradual warmup. If you jump right into skulls, The weight is immediately shifted to the tris and elbow joints, hence the pain.

I warmup quite a bit before hitting skulls and the result has been well received. I do occassionally have discomfort, but nothing like the past.

Lastly, after your done with your tri workout, Ice your elbows. Ice helps bring swelling down, this may help as well. Peace

Blood flow is paramount to healing, ice restricts bloodflow in a HUGE way thereby reducing healing. Swelling IS NOT the enemy, anti-inflamatories are!.

To me it simply sounds like tendonitis. I had it so bad the act of pushing open a door at the mall would leave me with pounding pain. I followed all the bullshit advice and a year later the problem persisted. Sure, I could mask the pain with anti-inflamatories or use ice but it didnt fic anything. tendons/ligaments heal very slow and inflamation of these tissues causes pain but also promotes healing at a rate that can actually allow us to continue lifting. Dumping anti-inflamatories down your throat and using ice prevent healing and mask the pain and your continued training continues to cause microtrauma and damage until finally one day BAM all hell breaks lose and you seriously fuck something up.

asiansINC1, I had a treatment called prolotherapy done on my elbows, as well as shoulders, one foot and my back at various times for various injuries. Its not an overnight fix and often takes a few treatments but interferes very little if at all with your training and actually strengthens the tendons/ligaments, often even more so than before you had prolo. To see if there is a doc by you check getprolo.com

use an ez-curl bar.

IMO, skull crushers put more stress on the elbows than on the triceps. I would go with more pressing movements like close-grip bench. Or you could just cycle them together...

why do people make such simple things complicated?

if skullcrushers are screwing with your elbows..don't do them..it's that simple.

if something isn't working dont do it..don't agonize over why
