i've had this dog for 15 years.. this is just so sad.. he can't even open his eyes he just lays there and breathes.. the vet said he's not in pain so i can wait out his death with me or put him to sleep.. i've been crying all night..

that sucks. I'm sorry to hear this. its a really hard thing to go through, i know.

I can't even read this thread. I just skipped right to the end to give my condolensces. :(

never thought anyone could get this emotional over a dog..
Oh, Phaded, of course you can hurt! People get emotional over things they care about, and you love your dog. I'm so sorry for you, and I swear to you, if the vet says he's not suffering, really, he's not. The worst might be a bit of confusion, but they don't think the way we do, they aren't capable of abstract thought, so if some part of their body stops working, they don't think "It USED TO, WTF is going ON with me?" The now is all they really relate to so if that leg doesn't work now, it doesn't work, they can't connect the fact that it used to work to the fact that it no longer works, if that makes sense ...

I'm so sorry for you. I too would be totally devistated if it were me. If there is any hope for your dog, I'd say hang in there for him but if not, don't leave him to starve while he is dying. It's always so hard when our loved ones go like this.

there is basically no hope other than a miracle.. but the vet said he'll stop breathing long before he starves to death.. so he's gonna die by my side.. he still has some sense i guess because when i put my other dogs around him he'll start breathing alot faster.. hard times..

feel bad for ya bro. what kind of dog you have?

rest in peace big charles.. he was a standard sized dachshund... smartest most loyal dog i've ever had..

Sorry to hear it. We've taken to taking in rescue dogs that nobody else wants over these past few years and taking in the old ones is the most painful. It's wonderful to see them able to enjoy the rural scents and enjoy a fulfilled and fun-filled twilight to their life. Sadly, being old, they don't last long and they go leaving an empty gap where a friend used to be.

Commiserations. Enjoy your memories of him.

From the pictures you had posted I thought most of your dogs were ex-racers. Too many greyhound tracks down here and not enough people to volunteer to take them in once they are retired. Some of them have been seriously abused by thier trainers and are quite vicious.

Sorry to hear about your dog, Phaded. Nothing is more loyal than a dog you have befriended.

My wife befriended a woman who runs a greyhound rescue center. Every once in a while, they find themselves overfull and desperate to offload some long-term high-maintenance residents. More than once she's returned with an unannounced addition to our family.

Phaded, do you have pictures?

OMG Phaded. I am soo soory for your loss. I almost cried reading this thread. I love my dog to death and can't imagine how you feel. God Bless.

one of my best friends
hardcore self-made wealthy guy Quantico trained x-marine officer
I visited him out in NC once shortly after he lost his shar pei
at the end of one of our "old style" evenings of avoiding prosecution and pushing boundaries
he was out back weeping at his dog's grave
I now have 3 cats, one of which is pregnant(I've had her about 3 weeks)
all taken in strays
and I dread the day when I lose them
well I have plans for the kittens
I'm a mortician and I face human death daily
and it's the animals I feel for most
they don't know

I've been with my surrogate son for nine years and I know the choice I'll have to make. Let him/her die in dignity and be in the room for comfort. It will be harder on you but easier on your pet. You know the right thing to do.....don't be selfish...

a tough choice would be
do you spend 1200 to extend your pet's life 6 months
or cut bait

What is the quality of life? If he can be his normal playful and affectionate self then no question I would pay. If he's a semi-vegetable or in constant pain...no.

I spent almost 1500 trying to keep a cat alive. It was my daughter's cat, so I had to do everything I could, but it wasn't enough.

I'm leading you into what happens for humans
I have better than a dozen years worth of suffering I heard at work

I'm all for euthanasia.....trust me..I know all too well the dilema. My father wants to die and my mother keeps using modern medical interventions to keep him alive regardless of his wishes because she doesn't want to be alone. My opinion, let my father die as a man, as per his wishes. The man is senile and doesn't recognize his grandchildren. He can't even move without help...how many of you EF men want to exist in that condition? He's also a war hero who served on Tarawa and Iwo Jima, do you think he wants this existance? I love my father enough to honor his wishes and allow him an honorable death.

that's my point
in an animal's worldview they have no concept of the origin or duration of their pain
they don't know their existence is finite
they don't know they won't wake up tomorrow free from pain
though I've witnessed some amazing short term recoveries when the opposite sex goes into heat

i can't believe he fought as long as he did.. :(
I can't imagine your pain
I've genuinely cried only twice in my life
both times over females, and ironically both times when I "secured" them
your pet typically doesn't have the options we have
though they will often adopt and accept with full devotion a new owner
I've also witnessed fully healthy pets dying eventually soon out of depression because their human was gone
I fear more dying before my pets do
I can't explain

Officially it's against our cemetery code to bury animals
but I've buried a couple of dogs besides their owners
