Conanx, Dude, that's rough! That's one negative environment to be in. No one I spend time with would act like that. If they do I cut them out. It's either be reasonably kind (as I would be to them) or don't expect me to participate. I just don't have time for that kind of negativity. But, it's tough when it's your family. Still, there have been times when I made no contact with either of my parents and certain other important people because I wanted no part in their behavior. Every situation is different though. All the best!
Needto, I'm with you man on not being able to be super selfish etc. I'm an open book type too and just don't have it in me to be consistently mean or anything like that- I can get there if pushed or when a situation calls for it. But, for the most part I don't want to live like that either. I guess, for me, there becomes a fine line between being kind and "spoiling" someone. If someone is taking advantage of me in any way I have to "pull back" a bit and rethink my approach to the situation.
This is a silly example, but... I have one rental building at the moment, 5 units. One day I was working on this lady's apartment who is consistently rude, abrassive, and demanding. I'm up there checking on the wiring or something and on the way out she just hands me a bag of garbage like, "Here, you take this out!" I calmly looked down at her and said, "I've got other things to do Rita, I'm not your bitch." And, then walked away. I wouldn't have done that with someone nicer, but someone nicer wouldn't have been that rude to me in the first place. If anyone asked for my help I'd gladly give it, but don't bully me or try to manipulate me. That's my take on it. I try to love everyone, but respect is earned!
