Phuket is awesome, and beaches are wonderfull....scooter is a must! The most important thing is to find a good cheap room with cable tv and aircon, and that youll find on the outskirts of the town, avoid close to beach everyrhing is more expensive - room, food, scooters...
And remember - if you are caucasian you can bang every thai girl, so aim only for top looking ones...you maybe even wont have to pay for it
Visit both Pattaya and Phuket and decide, but i think Phuket
