Muscle Soreness

Alright... I was just wondering what is an accessive length of time to be sore? I worked my legs monday and have been having fun trying to walk. I feel like I should be in the Special Olympics. Ohhhh I did say that.. not to offend anyone either... o.k. I really don't care.

What is best to do in this situation...

a) Stretch
b) Hot tub
c) work them again
d) cardio-running/ellyptical
e) Stay off them till full recovery

I tried A, B, C, D
Worse part is I've been doing this same routine for two months and yep... I just keep making it more intense.

Next part to the question:
When you lift like that.... Does your body store some water in the muscles, or hold the water?
This morning I weighed 1 1/2 pounds less then yesterday.

I don't know if it's the right thing, but I usually take some pain pills and push through. I'm usually only sore for 2 days. If I realy push it - three.

yes...biey wil hold water due to trauma....get some L glut powder...5 gams am and 5 grams post wo

GLutamine will help.

Also, working them when sore is a way to help decrease soreness, but working them LIGHTLY. Not just as intense. Active recovery.

yeah...I sometime call those feeder workouts.....light pumping, flushing wo's to flood the area with fresh blood

It been two days since I worked out bi's and tri's, and I can't lift my arms lol!
What causes this??

Damnit... I found an article the other day about how pain pills may prevent muscle growth. Not saying it's necessarily true, but it was an interesting read. I think it was on msn.com.

Here's my advice: LEARN TO LOVE THE SORENESS!!! Nothing feels better to me than feeling really sore from a hard workout...

Well... ok, I lie, I can think of some other things that feel pretty good :verygood:

Don't get me wrong I love being sore and knowing I killed myself... I did a light 2 mile run yesterday... Well my light is still a 8.5 mph on the treadmill.... The funny thing is... The lady next to me was trying to keep up with her 5.5 and was staring at my treadmill the whole time. Of course if only she knew my legs felt like lead she would have probably fainted. She actually helped me keep going I liked watching her mouth drop. I think that's why my legs feel a little better today...
I do take glutamine twice a day in the morning and usually after the work-out. Though I cut out the bananas for carb reasons... I'll look into K supplements...
Ahhhh I feel like a machine today... 10 hours of deep sleep and I feel like I can conquer the world.. well if my legs would let me

omg... that is one of my biggest pet peeves... when people can't mind their business on the treadmill. Ever see the people who stare to see what you enter for your weight? I wanna slap them and say, "DO YOU MIND?!" And it's always the fat ladies who are walking at 2.5 mph for some reason...

Nice! Thanks! That wasn't the one that I just read, but it was more or less the same point. I appreciate the effort...

You must spread some Karma around before giving it to Miss24k again :(

You're welcome :),

I wasn't sure if that was the same 1 that you read, but like you said it has the same points, and I thought that some of the ladies in here should take a look at it, if they haven't already.

Definitely.

On a side note, I love the day after a hard workout when you get involuntary twitiching in the muscles that you worked... it feels cool and it's kind of like a reinforcement that you hit em hard ;) I'm thinking of that cuz my quads are twitching as I type...

Anyone know what I mean?

I know exactly what you're talking about.

I love when I do legs and I can't walk out of the gym...when I got to sit down for 10 minutes, cause my legs won't stop shaking. lol. (which happens every leg day)

Yea I know, some of you ladies must be thinking I'm loco. lol

Oh I know what you mean!! When you can feel the knots and the muscle fibers going around the knots and they move as you walk... oh yeah I know all about that!
As far as that last comment on treadmill observers and space invaders I would just like to lean over and say come on can't you keep up... What's your weight again just for my own reference since you know mine now!
Same thing on the gym equipment! I could have stranggled some guys in there last night. The gawking is ridiculous. Especially when they just stand around the machine you want and then they stare at you, but they aren't looking at your face! Some guy did that to me last night and I turned around and stared at his package... O.k. lack there of.. He I think got the hint and walked away.... :mix:

HAHAHAHA! You're a riot... you've got guts girl...

The owner of my gym is the second biggest perv there (the general manager is the first, but he's not there when I workout). Yesterday he walked by me as I was stretching on a mat staring at me. He's a gross old man... he never said anything as he walked by... so I yelled "GOOD MORNING!!!" at him. LOL He is the classic "I talk to women's boobs" kinda guy...

Which reminds me of this episode of Scrubs that Heather Graham was on. She said to her friend something like, "Now, I'm going to go over there to that table of doctors and I'm going to tell them something about (blah blah blah) and they are going to stare at my chest and not hear a word I say." So she goes over and all of their eyes are fixated on her boobs. She said, "Yes, those are my boobs..." and crossed her arms over her chest and continued what she was saying. Cracks me up.

But yeah... back to the topic at hand... muscles twitching :p Sometimes if I'm out with friends and my muscles twitch I make them watch, LOL. They think I'm crazy but it makes me laugh.

Yeah well next time make them touch them! My friends get all grossed out and say, "I can see it I don't need to touch it!" I'm like, "Ohh but you do, you need to know what a good work-out will do to you."

Also since I did start this thread I will vent in.... I'm soooo sick of personal trainers and their ridiculous excuses not being able to go to the gym because they have to work somewhere else and don't make enough money... Hello I PAID you.... Ughhh I think my ex-trainer is in good need of a Bitch slapping!

Screw it, what do you need a trainer for?

I am a trainer, btw... don't hate because a few (okay, a lot)... are idiots...

I'm sick and tired of clients and their excuses of how they can't be in the gym because they're fat and lazy!!! SO THERE!!! :p

99% of all trainers are idiots.....

the other 1% is me...

and er....Ashley

LOL... damn straight :p

I'm still young and learning... that's why I come to this board. I do my research and keep an open mind.

I am no idiot though ;)

And I don't plan on doing this as a lifetime career... people are too goddamn annoying and unmotivated...

I know it's a good leg day when it takes a few minutes to get up the stairs out of the gym -- 1 loooooong flight of stairs with a platform in the middle. Ooooh the pain!!

I love being sore. I love the feeling like I've done something.

Frankly I'm just not happy with my workout unless I'm not sore the next day.

I'm addicted to DOMS!!!!

Is that weird? Am I normal? Define me pleeeaaassse!

I'm not saying all trainers are like that.. Just the majority... Wahhh I'm sick... Wahhh I can't go at that time... I understand the frustrations on the otherhand though too... Idiotic people that think they are going to lose fat overnight, or think a good hard cardio session is sitting on a bike reading a magazine about fit people and cycling once every 20 seconds... I here some of the other people that are training saying stuff to their trainers like,"I can't do that... that hurts... I don't like those..." I would say suck it up bitch  move it... you want results you have to put all your effort into it... or "Your back into it.... "

Maybe you should be training the trainer :)

It's all about self-motivation anyway... if you can motivate yourself to begin with and you do your reading and research, what do you need a trainer for?

so..you are stating that you are a waste of time, then?

:) ha ha good one Shadow... No I do all the research I just like switching my work-outs up a bit and getting a fresh idea on some new training. Not only that, people can tend to get lazy and I want mostly the trainer to look at my posture, spot me, and of course the new work-out regimine.
I'm probably one of the most highly motivated people in our gym. Always been that way... Good at motivating others... and many people told me that I should become a trainer. My ex-trainer said I actually motivated him to get to the gym more?!? I couldn't stand the complaining though, and people not listening to what you tell them to do. I think massage therapy is definitely my calling...

If you could take a video of me trying to walk, sit, stand, or climb stairs you would win an Oscar for Best Comedy!! ;) Worked out with my trainer Tuesday night-20 minutes-never been in this much pain after a workout!! The sad part is I was an athlete in high school-soccer. Trained harder then most people do their entire lives. I have done my share of HARDCORE workouts. Apparently I really am in as bad of shape as I thought...ha ha.

I'm going back to the gym tonight to do upper body. I know some of you have said to work the sore areas lightly-how lightly?

Sorry...I read what Daisy had said about lighty working sore areas. I wasn't going to at all, but if it would be good to do some light leg work then I will.

Shadow what do you think about working legs twice in one week... I mean like leg press, split squats, and leg extension monday, and like friday leg curl, calf raises, lunges, and even regular squats...?

I do a ham intense wo and then a quad intense wo every 7 days or so....Im gonn ahave to adjust that though

Yeah I think I'm going to have to split my leg work-out into two. I seem to only be able to work-out quads really hard or hamstrings really hard before the other one gives out.... It doesn't take me very long before I can't walk... I tried doing it all on monday and I think maybe I should work half my legs hard and throw in shoulders, and then the other day do a different leg work-out with abs.

Maybe try doing 1 exercise for quads, then 1 for hamstrings.

Yeah I have done that also but I don't seem to get the same feeling (not being able to walk) as I do with 3 targeting exercises per muscle.

I'm not saying don't do the 3 exercises per muscle. I just mean switch them around.

Quad exercise, Hamstring exercise, Quad exercise, Hamstring exercise, Quad exercise, Hamstring exercise.

So this way you're giving each muscle equal amounts of rest.

Lunges
Stiff Deads
Leg curls
Step ups

Lunges
hacks
leg press
extensions

That's like when someone comes into the gym and they greet you with "Good morning! Still deadlifting?"

Deadlifts.... better than stiff cuppa joe in the morning!

So what do you do? Do you just rip up your shoulders every time or do you use a towel or something?

the key is to smooth out the shirt you have on so there are no creases...set yourself and dont wiggle around

I have noticed when I do squats or anything with the bar across my shoulders for that matter my bone on my spine ends up bruised. Is that bad?

not in that a bruise is bad.....guys are lucky....we can set the bar ON our traps....

Yeah... I hate that pad they have that goes around the bar. I take it off because it makes the bar move around and just feels awkward...

I just wrap my towel around the bar.

And yes I had to hold back comments on that. I'll be a good girl.

For at least the next 5-10 min.....
