Multiple Camping Questions

Well - Even though I am an eagle scout I had some questions

What do you guys feel is best time to go campiing? NorthEast (spec NJ or PA)?

Are tents like eddie bauer etc good ? I see that stores like target and stuff sell them and at the end of summer give pretty good discounts.

I would like to go camping soon but dont plan on going to often just because of time and commitments - Is it better if going to a campground just to do the small cabin instead of buying all supplies again? Tents etc. Any help is appreciated as always

Not sure about the weather up there so I can't help much with that.

Those tents are ok they aren't for serious campers, but will do for a few weekends a year.

Unless you are going to make a regular thing of it I wouldn't suggest buying the gear unless you just have money lying around (in that case you could send it to me ;) ) or if you can pick it up on the super cheap. I definitely wouldn't suggest buying a large assortment of gear if you aren't going regulary, just pick up the basics.

Now if you are only going to go once or twice a year I would suggest going with the cabin idea since not only do you have to pony up the dough for gear you have to make room to store it too.

Cheers,
Scotsman

I like to go summer or fall in the Northeast PA area. Go during the week if you want the place to yourself. You don't need much in the way of gear to get started. I used to be able to go with a Wal-Mart tent, some food and beer, and a good saw.

Where in PA are you looking to go? Hickory Run State Park is one of my favorites along with Promised Land . Both offer lots of activities and places to just lose yourself for the day.

World's End State Park in PA has cabins for rent, stay away from holiday weekends. Up PA87 from Williamsport in Forksville. Very isolated, incredible trails. Another NE PA state park is Rickett's Glen, pretty waterfall trails not far from Wilkes-Barre.

PA Grand Canyon, you can take guided canoe trips or horseback tours down Pine Creek Gorge. Excellent trout fishing on Pine Creek and its tributaries. Cedar Run and Slate Run are trophy trout fly fishing only streams. There's a campground right on Cedar Run, called Petticote Junction with improved and boondock sites and cabins.

ACtually never heard of any of these places but I will definate check out - THANKS!

That can be a good thing sometimes.. Not hearing about a place..
as in Not crowded as hell.

I bought a old school Eureka dome tent when I was a youngin and that tent still rocks ass. About 4 years ago the wife and I bought one of those Eddie Bauer tents from target. For the the 1st four years it worked great. I always seam seal every year as a habit anyways, but even after this, on our last camping trip we got soaked. Rain was literally pouring through the seams on the fly where the clear patches are.

How young is too young to take your kids camping. Can/would you take a 2 year old camping? Just talking with a tent, no cabin or camper.

This time of year, i would see no problem with it. In the spring when the temps get down below 40-50 at night, I wouldn't advise it.

Not a clue...in the Pacific NW here...But I go camping whenever I can, any time of year. I tent camp Spring, Summer & Fall, and use Yurts during the winter.

You get what you pay for... I have an old canvas wall tent that works well all year long, but is heavy and cumbersome. I also have a dome tent that I won in a company party 10 years ago that works as good today as the day I won it.

If you spend any money on camping gear the best investment is a good quality sleeping bag! A "cheap" tent can usually weather most storms, but a camping experience is best rated on the sleep you get at night. If you are warm and comphy thru the night in your down sleeping bag, you will wake wanting to do it again. If you are cold and miserable all night, then you'll wonder why you ever thought of venturing into the woods in the first place.
