Muay Thai how do you..

get those hard shins? my shin has to be the weakest part of my body, when I knock it against an object, it hurts badly, so it amazes me when I see Muay Thai boxers kicking heads with their shin or even blocking kicks with their shins.

I'm looking to start Muay Thai, coming from a boxing background, I've trained Muay Thai before, introductry class but would like to get serious in it, so how can I get strong shins?

hey my first post here, after reading this forums for a couple of weeks.

Thanks.

bags man. dont believe that shit where people tell you to use bottles or sticks or whatever to rub your shins down.. or even in some cases purposely break your shins- thats just bullshit. just kick the bag. i presume you're going to be taught the proper form of a roundhouse kick during your class (i hope so , anyways!), but i am too lazy to explain how to perform a proper round house kick, so once you learn that in class just smash the bag. start off slow , look in the mirror to make sure your form is perfect, slowly, slowly, build up alittle bit faster, faster, faster, then after awhile go max power, then slow down slow down slow down, stop. repeat.. you should do so untill your shins are red and youre all sweaty and tired. this isnt one facet of martial arts you can go easy on, and it takes time man.. it takes alot of time.

LOL@ purposely breaking my shin, no way, I have heard about rubbing shins down with bottles and stuff to kill the nerves, to think that a top thai trainer told me this a while back, thank God that I didn't decide to start then.

I'm in Atlanta now and have found what seems to be a nice gym, velocity kickboxing, they have all kinds of fighters, NHB, Kickboxers, BJJ etc, any Atliens here?

Actually my main aim is to get back to shootfighting, standup/submission wrestling....thanks for your advice.

never seen any of the Thais use any special techniques other than the conditioning they get through kicking the bag and sparring, your shin condtioning will come with time

a simple drill is to take turns kicking and blocking with a partner, a little tip i find useful when blocking is to turn the blade of the shin towards the opponents incoming shin, if done right this will be more painful for your opponent

Out in thailand some of the muay thai guys fill the punch bags with sawdust, so its harder and in turn will toughen up your legs.

Ya man YARG is 100% correct! Never beat shit up aginst your shins, all this will do is deaden the nerve but not make your shins any stronger. Make sure you go to a good gym that has good heavy bags- youl know a good heavy bag they are very hard and if you are just starting out after a few kicks you should be in a lot of pain- A lot of gyms will have a cheep heavy bag, it will be soft and they will tell you to bang things up aginst your shins to condition them... they are full of shit and these gyms sould be avoided!
Also when you are picking out a trainer try to get some one that goes to thailand often, Some of the worst fights iv seen were by fellas that go to these American Boxing/thai boxing gyms...dont mess with these go to one thats all the way thai. An american boxing gym will always focus to much on the punches, which are not much good if you are fighting a good thai fighter who will keep you out of range with kicks to your legs.
Also what state are you in and are you wanting to learn traditional thia?

I live in London and Atlanta, I actually want to learn grappling/Muay Thai, I boxed amateur for a few years and did grappling around 1998, one or 2 of the guys I trained with back then have fought in UFCs, sometimes I look at it like "if only I stayed training back then", I found a good gym in Atlanta...

I'll give them a try.
