Mountain biking kicked my ass

"Oh, I'll just take a leisurely bike ride around the lake on the hiking trail. What, it's five miles? I run five miles no problem, I should be able to knock this out fast."

Two miles in I'm drenched with sweat and my traps and shoulders are screaming. I finished the whole thing, but holy shit did that last mile fucking suck. Thank god it was the easiest terrain of the trail with very few steep incline/declines and not nearly as many rocks and roots jutting up all over the place.

My first time doing it, too. My usual arrogance about how I'm athletic and I can do anything was in full force. I got humbled.

I did the same thing maybe 6 months ago. It was some length like that, and I thought "Psh, biking is easy, I can do this no problem." Obviously I'd never ridden on anything but pavement. I was sore for a couple days. Some of it wasn't too bad, but when I'd hit a patch of sand, I'd want to die.

No sand for me...the rocks where the worst, uphill or down, because it required such firm control of the bike. I'm a little sore but not too bad because I work my back muscles every time i'm working the boat.....but my power endurance was severely tested. My muscles were shaking near the end and I was breathing HARD.

Though, I also got an 80 min hot stone massage right after I got back to my room and showered. Might have helped a little bit with the soreness.

I always did prefer biking downhill. I would much prefer to hike up a mountain, than to bike. that way I can enjoy my surroundings instead of using so much effort and concentration solely on just getting the bike up the mountain.

I've road biked enough. That's why I thought I could do mountain biking no sweat. Whoops.

Puds, pound for pound I whoops most guys in a lot of athletic stuff, so I'm not really feeling the woman thing holding me down.

PHYSIOLOGY OF ACTIVITY
VO2 Max.....
"VO2 max is influenced by several factors

• Gender: lower in women "

"Males remain stronger than females, when adjusting for differences in total body weight. This is due to the higher male muscle-mass to body-weight ratio."

There is probably a testosterone dependent stimulatory effect on muscle contraction as well.

Maughan R J, Watson J S, Weir J (1983). "Strength and cross-sectional area of human skeletal muscle". The Journal of Physiology 338: 37–49. PMC 1197179

You should try it on an actual mountain at altitude. Even a gradual climb on somewhat easy terrain kills you. I thought it'd be pretty easy to take the tram up at Snowbird and just haul ass down. Newp. Tearing down an entire mountain with your body tense holding on for dear life works you as bad or worse than going up. It's just different muscles.

On average, sure. I'm not your average female. I'm not talking strength anyway. Overall athleticism. Strength, coordination, endurance, etc. I've never met an individual sport I couldn't pwn very quickly.

Nev, I bet it was hell. Altitude changes everything.

VO2 Max is endurance....

Think you could "walk the peg board"...its a great test of general athletic ability.

Ours wasn't as tall but it was six pegs wide which meant you had to walk right to left or left to right, go up one level and repeat....using your legs is cheating btw. :)

For me it's the opposite. Road biking kicks my ass, which is why I keep going back to it.

Looks legit.

Your link about gender vs gender athleticism still is irrelevant to what I said, though. It doesn't include skill and coordination, and it speaks of groups as a whole where I was speaking only for myself :-)
