Mountain biking kicked my ass

"Oh, I'll just take a leisurely bike ride around the lake on the hiking trail. What, it's five miles? I run five miles no problem, I should be able to knock this out fast."

Two miles in I'm drenched with sweat and my traps and shoulders are screaming. I finished the whole thing, but holy shit did that last mile fucking suck. Thank god it was the easiest terrain of the trail with very few steep incline/declines and not nearly as many rocks and roots jutting up all over the place.

My first time doing it, too. My usual arrogance about how I'm athletic and I can do anything was in full force. I got humbled.

I did the same thing maybe 6 months ago. It was some length like that, and I thought "Psh, biking is easy, I can do this no problem." Obviously I'd never ridden on anything but pavement. I was sore for a couple days. Some of it wasn't too bad, but when I'd hit a patch of sand, I'd want to die.

No sand for me...the rocks where the worst, uphill or down, because it required such firm control of the bike. I'm a little sore but not too bad because I work my back muscles every time i'm working the boat.....but my power endurance was severely tested. My muscles were shaking near the end and I was breathing HARD.

Though, I also got an 80 min hot stone massage right after I got back to my room and showered. Might have helped a little bit with the soreness.

I always did prefer biking downhill. I would much prefer to hike up a mountain, than to bike. that way I can enjoy my surroundings instead of using so much effort and concentration solely on just getting the bike up the mountain.
