most important thing is to procure a cool leather jacket

lolol....uhm, some common things, fork seals, chain an sprokets, make sure the forks and rims are straight, and make sure it shofts smoothle

check for hitching cables, look over rotors for grooves or hot spots (blue)

look it over for leaks at all of the engine cases..

tires that look cupped or squared off
polishes cases or recently painted frame indicate its been dropped...as does any non factory colors...and suspicious dents in the tank that line up with bars

upgrades are cool by an older adultone owner rider....but from a kid means they broke something and abused the bike

oh, and it should start right up....hesitation...or starter fluid, or warm before you got there...= dirty carbs

which....you dont sound like youre tearing down and synching carbs(no offense)...so stay away from that

hondas are so reliable theyre boring

also...make sure the mileage matches the title somewhat....changing guages takes like 10 minutes ona bike

go with a magna bro. It's the same thing as a shadow only it's a 4 cylinder. A 750 twin is really unacceptable. The magna has 4 into 4 pipes so it looks the same from all sides and angles.

why is 750 unacceptable bor
i like the pipes on one side look and whatnot

the shadow is a pretty reliable twin and theyre not heavy...also important for a newb

If you haven't worked on bikes before take it to a motorcycle shop and pay them to inspect it. It'll save you a big headache later on if something you miss goes wrong with it.

^^ he makes a valid point...

however my first bike was a basket case...which taught me a lot about bikes...but uhmmm

I worked at a bike shop and had a lot of help

Not everyone gets to work in a bike shop with their first one, and having a basket bike was a great learning experience. I started working on bikes and cars with my dad when I was about 5, so 28 years later I feel pretty comfortable doing things myself.

yeahhhhh...get a new R6, then send it to me....fuel infected bikes are the tits

Motorcycles are dangerous ... mkay?

That's why my doc friend refers to them as murdercycles.

Chris386493578934 feel free to back me up on this.

I started riding motorcycles (Yamaha 60) when I was 9. I wouldn't regularly ride a bike on the streets today.

I was in the USAF, but I hate flying and would avoid it at all cost.

Mods please change my login to "Wussboy"

kthxbye

a 750 twin has no balls. If you're gonna do a twin you gotta have at least 1200cc's....and that will not be a fast bike either, but it'll have enough to get you out of trouble. The thing with bikes is that you want a good throttle response to get out of shit if you see it coming. You don't have to worry about speed, twins aren't going to be ridiculous in that dept as they don't rev that high. But torque is important. If you find yourself caught in merging traffic it's good to know you can crack the throttle real quick and fuck out of there. Of course you don't want a moon rocket either that's going to do a wheelie if your wrist merely twitches. I dunno, maybe the 750's nowadays have more balls than a few years back. But then there's the sound. Me personally I wouldn't buy a twin unless I could afford something at least 1500-1600. But if this is your first bike and you're using it to learn and you want a smaller bike to do your test on....than by all means, that's a smart move. But if you've ridden before and know your way around bikes....you're gonna want more than that 750 pretty quick.

uh huh....only a 230 dual sport is snappy enuff to skit-n-git

youre not factoring weight to torque...or even SD's weight for that matter
or skill
or the fact that for prolly 2 seasons, defensive riding will be his biggest goal, not offensive riding

horrible advice for a noob redsam
go with the 750 for your first dave

This is my hawg if it looks like this buy it.

My best advice is to get one from a 50-something dude who bought a bike new on a whim, and rode it twice only to find out it doesn't replenish his lost testosterone, and it's now on CL. Probably in those cases, you'll have to do a thorough carb & fuel system clean-out, but everything else should be like new. Both of my street bikes are collector/vintage bikes, and I had to do plenty of work on them. Both 1985; my HS graduation year, a Honda VF1000R (first full race-bodied crotch rocket with v-four cam gear drive), and a Yamaha VMX12 V-Max (ridiculously overpowered road cruiser). Either of those machines would be a mistake for a beginner, or even for a long-time rider with less experience on big, high-torque bikes.

I think a 750 twin or V-four is fine for anyone who has at least a little time in the saddle, and the Honda Shadow is a nice bike. Not my style, but nice bike and reliable with good resale value. The only time a 750 might be underpowered would be for a really big guy, say 275+. If it weren't for 30-plus years experience on big bikes, I'd have crashed both of mine by now. At 185 lbs, I can't keep the front wheel down without using extreme discipline ;)

Charles

my 70 something yr old Grandfather rides a VMX12 v-max...thats not a judgement call BTW
hes been riding since he was knee high to a grasshopper

Shadow has eexcellent resale value....

btw SD, I forgot to mention mileage as far as whats acceptable...keep in mine 20-30k is considered a LOT of mileage for a bike (not that I havent seen bikes w/ higher miles be perfectly fine)

but yeah a low mileage bike thats sat and a good shop (or a good manual/google search) to douche the fuel system is GTG

also...look in the tank to see if theres rust or any sort of coating inside, rust in the tank will murder a bike
ask if they ever put stabil in it when it was parked, I find mikuni carbs less fussy than kheinan carbs (sp?) I don't remember which the shadow has

I'll sell you my 636. Only been dropped like 30-40 times. It's got a cage so it's cool. :-)

Oh and it needs tires from the burn outs but you can get take offs pretty cheap. The front rim may have a slight bend in it from the wheelies. And some of the plastics have zip ties on them. But otherwise runs great!!!

if you weren't such a fatass you wouldn't bend your rims.

SB = Genius and up holder of all things American, snuff, beer and Harleys.

Matter-of-fact, but maybe not what a Harley owner wants to hear, is that I like to RIDE my motorcycles; not push or tow them. Therefore, I've always owned Japanese bikes (and a Husqvarna). But in full defense of, and being a red-blooded American myself, I'd buy a Harley to support the heritage of the American machine. But that's the only reason. I respect that it's a culture, and that a lot of bikers have just as much fun from working on Harleys as riding them. I'm that way with my weird Toyota Diesels that you can't get parts for, and nobody knows how to work on them. But my bikes need to be ready at all times for me to jump on, fire up and GO. No babysitting the carbs, no fiddling with the shift linkage, and no complicated algorithms to figure out the steering angle of a strange custom front end.

You didn't mention the agricultural engine.

HMMM I've had my harley for six and a half years now and so far I've had to change......the oil filter and oil.

One of my buddies had 250,000 miles on his four years ago and had replaced the brakes, tires, spark plugs, oil, and filter. I also know severl people who have 100,000 plus miles on their hawgs without doing anything other than routine maintenance. Don't know a single honda owner who's made it over 35k without a rebuild.

I love how people still think that Harleys are the same as when AMF owned them in the late 70's and early 80's (when yes they were garbage).

Oh and check into the resale value of a Harley vs any other bike. Mine is worth more than what I paid for it because it's a collector's item.

No offense. I like your old man bike. Don't get me wrong. They're very cool for that special mid life crisis situation or when you finally save enough money to afford one.

I wasn't sure if he was a noob or not, which is why I gave the exception statement at the bottom. IF it's his first bike, a light 750 is a great bike to cut your chops on and get your liscense with.

They're built a lot better than they used to be, but they're still V-twin cruiser trash.

Funny since I bought mine at 25, so unless that's midlife crisis age...

Of course I guess I don't probably count since I went to college and got a well paying job with my degree. :)

LOL @ you and my old man bike. I have had several bikes and no this is not the ZX11 I use to ride, but I am also not as big of a fucking fool as I use to be. And as far as me being old LOL

You guys sure are touchy about those harleys.

I am not your prototypical Harley guy, I just got one. I ride it every once and awhile and I enjoy it. Not a die hard biker by any means, but the local bike clubs around here won't let you in unless you ride a Harley. My point being it is as American as baseball and apple pie. I would buy an American piece of shit and push it before I would buy a fucking fag bike like a Honda. Grant you I am talking cruiser type bikes. The crotch rockets are a diffrent story, and I have owned several. ZX11, Katana, CBR 900 rr and a couple more. I think as you get older you either become more supportive of your country or more liberal. I have fought for my country as did my father and my grand father and his father, kinda hard not to be touchy about supporting your country when your family tree drips with the fucking blood of Patriots.

I feel you. And I agree to an extent. Every generation for as long as this country has existed my people have fought. Hell my dad was SF from 68-72. I'm well aware that what I ride is disposable! But I refuse to become part of some status quo (and thats exactly what owning a Harley has become!). Ha, ford trucks even come with some BS Harley edition. For a premium price! HD should stand for "hundred dollars". Cuz you ain't walkin outta the Harley shop with out spending at least that!

I have a lot of friends that are what you would consider " hard core bikers" and they simply refuse to spend the money. Most if not all have built there own from rolling chassis and put what they wanted on it. From Arlen ness to S&K. And spent equal to or less money.

With that being said they'd still choose a Harley over rice when it come to a cruiser. But hands down rice wins over buell everytime with them...

I even ride an old rigid triumph my buddy has.

And no offense but LOL @ the katana! JK :-)

I hear you and now after reading your explanation I only wish to choke you slightly, LOL. And I will say I agree 100% about the Harley Shop bought a pair of riding gloves tag, tax, and title 105 bucs and some change.

I don't think the ridiculous parts cost is limited to Harley. I tried to get a set of carburetur slide diaphragms for my '85 V-Max, and they were over $200 each! That means about $1000 for parts alone to fix the carbs. I bought a whole wrecked V-Max for $500 and took them off it.

Charles

Ducati Hypermotard 796 is a nice adult bike, just do it.

I enjoy dressing like a hard core biker and telling everyone, "my scooter is in the shop".

You just like the assless chaps!

Of course chaps by definition are assless it just sounds better to say it that way.
