Motivation??

I was wondering how you all stay motivated to work out consistantly. I am having trouble getting to the gym. I have only made it about 3 times a week for the last month. I play football and baseball so I am very busy, and my body is pretty run down right now. Sleep is a rare thing for me, so energy is definately a problem when it comes to motivation.

playing baseball and football and getting to the gym 3 times a week sounds pretty good to me. sounds like you stay physically active. what more are you looking for in the gym? 4 days a week? more?

I regularly squeeze the fat on my body...it helps to remind me that no matter how much progress I've made, there is always room for improvement. ;)

Actually, I used to be hot and cold when it came to getting exercise. I'd stay motivated for a month or two, then slack off and quit altogether. For the past year now, even if I don't feel like going to the gym, I go anyways. Motivation isn't really necessary (but it is helpful)...it's become a habit.

Don't get me wrong, I like my share of motivation. I went to the NPC USA's last month in Vegas and took a bunch of pictures with many of the pro's. Meeting them and getting a chance to see them in the flesh was great for my motivation. I put the pics up on my fridge...a little extra appetite deterrent! As a chick, I like to shop, so getting new clothes is always motivating.

I've heard said that motivation is like taking a shower...you've got to do it everyday for it to be effective! I think that after a while it becomes easier to be consistent because the habit is formed...and we all know how hard habits are to break!:)

Since January 2003 I was going to the gym 5 times a week. I lost 25 pounds of body fat and went from about 20% to 11% in that time. I'm very active, but when playing sports, I tend to slack off in the gym. Even if I am there 3 times a week, it is very low intensity so my workouts are pretty week.

Thanks for the reply.

somethings you might try.

* Get a new trainingpartner

* Get in the right mood before going to the gym, it helps me if im angry at something but still got focus. Listen to the rocky theme or whatever makes you wanna start pumping :)

*try some nice supplements such as twinlabs ripped fuel.

I agree with joltman on 2 of those.

1)Sometimes a supp (Thermorexin) can get you REALLY pumped up for a workout.

2)Tunes and anger. I try to take out all of my frustrations on those weights.

Motivation is key in my mind. If you are not motivated you need to take a look at why.

Do you have goals?
Are they clear and concise?
What are they?
Are they realistic?
Do you monitor your progress?

I too play sports but I take my lifting serious above all things. I know that where I want to be requires work and dedication. If I lose motivation I take a long hard look at the guys that have been there religously for the last 3+ years and I see what motivation can do for you. I know that If I stay with it I too will accomplish my individual goals.

Motivation is not something you have but something you create. You find it in all things around you. If you notice a woman checking you out you can attribute that to the hard work you have been puttin in in the gym. If you get the play of the game because you are in better shape than the next guy that too should be motivation.

It is good to be focused and even angry sometimes when working out but the motivation should first and foremost come from within. A desire to be better than what you are and then some. A strong will to push past any limitation that you or anyone else may place upon you. If you can develope this then the motivation to work hard will be so strong that nothing can slow you down.

It's all about dreams and desire man. If you want it bad enough you will make it happen. If not well then that's ok too.... i guess.

Oh, yeah, I bet you've got a lot of fat to squeeze

;) I'm teasing you. I know what you mean. We all have room for improvement.

When my motivation lags, I just watch very strong powerlifters and bodybuilders train. Ronnie Coleman's video certainly fired my ass up. So did Dorian's.

Sometimes just reading a detailed account of a serious trainer's workout is enough, really. That's one of the reasons I enjoy EF so much.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I train on my own due to the fact that most of my friends are baseball players and don't know what a gym is:rolleyes:
I keep telling them how much lifting has helped my game, but they are a bunch of lazy a$$'s.
Thanks

its easy for me............. i know my type of training is hard, but its my hobby. its part of who i am, so its pretty easy to lift.......... but i slack sometimes too. but the main thing that motiviates me is seeing myself improve..............it keeps me going.

X

Thanks Gig, that is definately what I need to do. After I reached my last goal, lifting kind of got pushed aside and wasn't as high on my priority list as it should have been.

Let's just say I'm curvy! I'm constantly grabbing my tummy and assessing it...sometimes my inner thighs too. I have relatively big legs for a chick (played catcher in softball for years) and even a little fat makes them look huge! So I do test grabs now and again for a reality check...I know, I'm looney, but it definitely motivates me.:silly:

Part of your problem may be the training program you are following. I play football and during the season my workouts are intense but they are structured with my extra workload in mind. Why don't you post up your typical routine as well as what you do for sports outside the gym and maybe we can get you going on something a little more appropriate for your specific needs.

After reading everyone's replies, it really got my panzy a$$ back on track. When I am highly stressed, I tend to slack off the gym, when in reality, I should bust it harder releasing some of that stress. Every once in a while I just need a quick in the a$$.
Thanks to all

Down 2 efedras and drink a large coffee, then listen to some system of a down... wait till desired effect, then go lifting. :D

dont make this a habbit though ..lol

1. Our body was made by god and its are job to take care of it
2. Seeing my friends and other who are out of shape
3.The compliments I get
4. The great feeling after a hard workout
5. The confidence it gives me

Theres more but that should do

I write my goals down. Last time I wrote a number I wanted to hit at my next meet on my mirror. I had to look at it everytime I went in my bathroom.

Play loud ass music. Hatebreed works well for me.

A training partner who has similar goals and is close in strength levels can be one of the best things there is.

"Supplements" help with motivation and anger also.
