More Bad News!!!

Well, I have been having some pretty bad lower back troubles over the past year or more, so I have pretty much had to stay away from core muscle builders like squats and deadlifts, which is how I think I screwed it up to begin with. Well, finally decided after struggling with it for over a year to get it checked out. Went to a chiropracter who took x-rays and everything looked perfect so referred me to a medical imaging center to get an MRI taken. Now this SUCKS!!! The doc told me that two of my lowest discs are herniated/slipped and that the the third lowest disc is bulging!!!! I'm like shit and then he goes on to tell me I should stay out of the gym for awhile and probably reevaluate my lifestyle? Well, I was pretty bummed but I've been dealing with it for a year now I guess I'm just gonna have to deal with it for a long time now. Definitely going to stay away from stressful exercises on the lower back and I'll probably look into getting some epideryl cortisone shots to see if that may help a little. Ain't doing surgery though unless it absolutely comes down to that. If any of you guys have any personal experience with this please chime in with your stories or advice. Thanks!

Yes and no. He wants to begin on going treatment 4 days a week and hour intervals. He said that with treatment pain can be alleviated and your body can learn how to function better even with the nerves being affected. He also said that discs could possibly recede a little back between the vertebrates. But, he said that once a disc is slipped/herniated that it is pretty much out for good unless surgical methods are taken to fix it. You can't pop a disc back into place thru chiropractry like you can pop a bone or vertebrate back into place. This is something that needs to be dealt with by a neurologist.

Can't the chiropractor help out somewhat with that though :)?

Bro , i can tell you an almost the exact same story. Im recovering from 3 slipped/bulging disks at the moment. Take the right approach, rest and avoid anything that loads your back, pulls you forward or causes your pelvis to flex forward such as going too low on squats or leg presses. Do the right things and it will get better...you do not want to live your life with back pain.

Shitty bro ... I have had lower back problems all year. YOu have me scared that that is what I may have, as my pain comes and goes. Mine is due to a dislocation in my shoulder of all things. It has caused soooo many problems with my back, due to compensation of the muscles in my back. One side does all the work. I really fucked it up doing heavy deads though. Thats what sent me to the Chiropracter. He has been doing subluxations on my back for the past 3 months, and it has helped immensely.

I am going to refer you to Junk to talk to. He has went through what you are going through just recently. His was very serious and painfull as well. He will be able to give you some first hand advice. I will pm him and tell him to post on this thread for you.

Isnt that the worst thing in the world .. the thought that you cant squat or deadlift? I am just starting back to it right now. Very light weights for now. I have to work on my core stability big time. Good luck bro,
Mavy

a slipped and/or bulging disc is not a permanent problem. a herniated disc, which usually requires more than an MRI to diagnose, is another issue, but even that can be repaired. this is NOT a death sentence, you just need to learn how to strengthen your deep back and core muscles as well as training technique which takes emphasis away from the low back and puts it in places like the hips.

unilateral exercises, and stretches for the hip extensors are a good place to start your comeback. let me know how it's going for you bro. oh this is not just talk, i had a disc taken out of my low back in '84, when i was 23 yrs. old. i now do anything i like; power cleans and snatches, squats, deads, etc., etc. like i said it's not a death sentence what the doc told you, you just need to regroup and get smarter about how you do things, that's all.

my opinion is get the surgery done. ive known about 3 different people with simular problems. the doc always reccomends therapy first, which never works, and the condition just gets worse. finally after about a year of agony the doc tells em its time to consider surgery, which he should have done in the first place. all 3 got surgery and have had full recovery's , no pain any more. i saw one of em in the gym a few days ago squatting with over 500lbs for reps. it took em about 2 yrs after the surgery to get his back strong enough to squat that heavy again. if he would have had the surgery in the first place he could have been back to heavy squats 2-3 yrs ago.
