Which is the best training method?

Just wondering, what do you lot think about this, and which is the best to use assuming your on the juice.

Arnold Schwarzenegger - 25 sets per exercise (for example for chest - 25 sets bench press, 25 sets incline press, 25 sets pek deck)

OR

Mike Mentzer - Heavy Duty. (Go in gym, train as intensely as you can with few reps and sets and get out (Basically 6-10 reps and 3-4 sets/exercise.).

Somewhere in the middle, everyone responds differently, but who the hell has time to do Arnold's routine, and no matter how intensely I train, a few sets just doesn't feel like enough

I think if your workout last longer than 45min-1hr per body part then there's a real problem with workout intensity.

How can you justify how Arnold trained.

Could it have been because of his genetics?

Definilately heavy duty! Lifting is fun, but seriously who wants to go gym twice day and spend 3-4 hours on there? Imo it is nice to do 30-60 minutes intensive workouts and i have other thing to do too.

true, time is usually a factor w/ most people. What i have found to be most effective is to switch up your training. I've worked out similarly in both ways, finding both worked pretty good. But after a couple of months i change the routine around, as well as reps and sets.

I think that drug use has a lot to do with it. Arnold was well known to use megadoses (9 d-bol in a single dose!). But Jesus Christ 75 sets for chest.

Personally I have gained 10 pounds in the last three months training naturally on a strict heavy duty routine (Now 220 @ 15%) and that's pretty good I think.

Genetics and Drugs.
Anyway Arnold was overtrained...he could have been even better with proper training. No doubt Mentzer also did roids.

Mentzer, for those of us who want a life outside of all this.

That´s true, but even if I didn´t want a life outside of the gym I wouldn´t do it the Arnie way. Mentzer all the way!!! Intensity is what makes your muscles grow!!

?? Arnold did 5 exercises and 5 sets for chest, 25 sets TOTAL. still extreme in my book. too much...
Mentzer, good ideas but not my style either. I prefer Dorian Yates aproach with is actually more similar to mentzer's heavy duty.

both training styles are flawed IMHO yet they did BOTH yeild great physiques... ie: it's up to you.

Well I usually go with Heavy Duty when off gear....When on I use Dorian´s aproach, wich is like a heavy duty aproach for the steroid user.

HD worked great for me when I was just starting out. Now I still train intensely but do 2-3 sets to failure.

Cornelius - what's Dorian's approach?

Not MENTZER!!!???!!!!????

This is the funniest thing I've read on the boards in a while:

"No doubt Mentzer also did roids."

SAY IT ISN'T SO, JOE!!!!

ROTFLMAO!

Secondly, rent Conan the Barbarian take a look at the monster Arnold was, then take a look in the mirror and decide if you can train like him.

Steroids his genetics are questionable.

When he was a kid he actually trained WISELY! 3 days per week.... That laid his foundation for muscle size...

When you HAVE his muscularity, then yoiu can safely do his killer routines...!!!

Thats the same way I have been training as well. I enjoy training a whole lot more when I am not in the gym 6 days a week for an hour and a half per day.

The answer is easy for me. I am not Arnold, nor am I Mentzer. Silent Method type training is best for me...

Obvioulsy both used alot of juice and had great gentics, and this contribited more than anything else to their gains. I prefer niether style, both had strengths and weaknesses. Menzer was probably correct in that intensity without huge amounts of volume is very effective for stimuating growth and allowing for very rapid recovery, however anywho who looks at research done on muscle growth would believe that it takes an entire week for a muscle to recover and grow. The growth process rarely lasts more than 48 hours after a workout, and by the end of the week, you have actually lost a little size due to detraining. Sorry if that strikes a nerve, but it is what modern science (and Menzer did advocate ALWAYS taking a logical and scientific approach to training) has now shown. Arnold was grossly overtraining with 25 sets for a muscle group, but I think tons of d-bol and his genetics allowed for him to recover from this. His belief in training a body part 3 times a week is dead on, if one could find a way to recover from the insane volume he advocated. Looking at his arms, clearly he found a way.
