Mentality and Lifting.

New member
Lifting is quite a hard thing for some. And for others it comes by easily.
Why is it that some people moving up weight and lifting is so fucking easy? Genetics? Mental focus? Diet? Training style? Sure all of them play a role, but damn I think we can all agree mentality in lifting is the key aspect to success. Can we not?
My buddy and I were talking at the gym about this, and it’s not just with lifting, but with everything. Sports, life, the gym, school all of it! Me and him are both basically the same when it comes to mental focus. We have none. And we thought about it and realized after our fail benching, is that to lift big you really have to be cocky. Or to be good at a sport, you have to be cocky. He plays goalie in lacrosse, and last season he wasn’t the best (he is the best in the league though), but this year when he got cocky about it he said he improved so much more it’s unbelievable.
But when your cocky, your also a huge fucking dick.. Is that what it takes to lift big? To increase weights, to get through the workout? How do you guys do it when it comes to mental focus In the gym?
Personally I myself have no mental focus, and think I can’t do anything. Even in soccer I’m pretty good, and if I was cocky I could be phenomenal but I think everything I do is bad so it brings my game down soo much. But I don’t want to be cocky and suck dick.

Anyone ever get through this, or think about this? That being cocky or being full of yourself helps you with things in life? Even if your looked as a dick lol.

Make any sense at what i'm trying to get at here?

It would make sense if I understood what the word being censored that ends with the Y was. But in all seriousness your success with lifting is determined with 40% genetics/60% lifestyle. Many people undestimate the enormous effect genetics have on weight lifting. Its that ugly truth that no one wants to talk about, why? Because it basically means that if you give it your all and dedicate your life to lifting you still will not be able to make a career out of it simply because you do not have the genetic potential. People can workout half as much as you do and still make better gains and have a better physique simply because their body type is more responsive to weight training. It sucks, but I got over it. Sorry if I misunderstood your question, probably did.

At least this is my interpretation.

that word not sure which your talking about, may have been
c o c k y

And your right a 100%. Everybody talks about changing your genetics or whatever by lifting, but its hard if you honestly have 0 genetics for lifting in the first place haha. I know tons of white kids in my school that just start lifting, and they lift lighter but have say bigger arms then me, i don't do biceps just compound lifts where as they isolate biceps but still, i train harder and i don't get results as quick.

It is a good interpretation, i like it and it was great input. I got over my shitty ass genetics, but they just seem to catch up to you..

I think for mentality mental toughness can be trained, but also a lot of it is genetic. Some people are just formed throughout life to have the never quit puke all over the floor attitude and some quit when they feel the slightest pain. One of my friend's comes in and benches maybe once a month and adds 10 pounds to his max a time, the other comes 1-2 times a week and can't add shit to his bench. That is genetics right there.

Yeah thats very true. Mental toughness can be thrown around though, its how you have been raised, and your genetics.. But some people like you said have that never quit, then others quit right away.

I sit at the point of never ever quitting, but i don't have the focus in the gym to lift big. And i think if you are overconfident, or have a good border line of being confident you can lift big. Because you know you can do, and you will reach it if your mind is set. While if you have not mindset, then you won't reach your goals. I have my mindset, but i just don't reach my goals. I am pretty sure with me its all genetics. Nobody, in my family history, has ever, ever lifted weights or done bodybuilding. on top of that my parents came from india to here, i have to live with those shitty genetics lol

Bro take a look at andalite he is from India and is getting some solid lifts, just got to 500 deadlift.

ark- usually, mentality @ the gym affects people who don't realize they are not mentally tough. For you, someone who realizes he needs to have a better mentality at the gym, you should just do whatever it takes to motivate yourself. If that means bringing a picture of a girl you want to bang to the gym, then by all means hang the picture up on the mirror doing squats and think of every squat as another item of clothing she takes off. Does that sound fucking retarded? Yes. Should you do that? After thinking about it, hell no. You have to know why you're working out and what you want to achieve. If adding 5 lbs per session motivates you, then tell yourself that if i get this i can finally hit X amount of weight. If you're lifting for looks, just think about how much bigger your body will get while doing a lift. I think squats are 5% strength, 95% mentality. I was doing 105x20 and barely finishing it after 3 very hard working sets of squats, and one day i said to myself "fuck it. im hitting 135 for 20 flawless reps" and i hit it like it was 105.

Kill it. You're strong dude- your bench has surpassed mine!! :) (which is hella weak lol)

Well said, I know that when i am shooting for a PR on my bench I will be warming up at around 205 and be like damn this is harder than it should be. But once I get up to my 5RM weight I can push it out just as good as 205 because I am motivate. Mental motivation can make or break you so its important people learnn to use it.

dude its not easy for anyone...

the guys that lift light and have bigger arms than you will have started bigger than you, you started very skinny so of course people will have bigger arms.

Its hard to understand when you swear so much, you said this - "But I don’t want to be cocky and suck dick." what is that supposed to mean?!

if you recognise the fact that you dont have much confidence it is something you must work on, not something that people can improve for you over the internet...

yeah i apoligize for swearing so much.

What i mean is you hvae to be full of yourself to do things, but if you aren't good or end up failing you look like a complete idiot and a fool for being that way.

i realize nobody cn change that on the internet, but i was curious to see people's thoughts on this. and i have learned some things, its been interesting what has been said.

lol white kids. you can't say cockiness and mental focus have anything to do with each other. There is also difference between being confident and being overly confident (cocky). When I get under the bar, I'm confident that I can do it and I tell myself in my head ima fuckin kill this shit. All attention and focus is on lifting that weight with proper form. My mind never wanders anywhere else when I'm lifting. Why have the attitude that you can't lift it anyway? That's not the best mindset.

Quoted for truth! Seriously though you do need to stop bitching about this and that. For a while when I first started I would be like shit I don't want to go lift today. But after I got more into it I workout 6 days a week with 4 days of lifting and I love everytime! Even on the rare occasion when I don't feel like going I head down there anyway and it feels great. Honestly though run days suck cause to me endurance takes 10 times more mental toughness than lifting. So on a lifting day I feel like I am barely doing anything compared to lifting (fuck today is a running day:( )

Lol it doesn't offend me if you swear it's just sometimes hard to understand

as you get bigger and stronger your confidence should improve...

i find that you have to be 'addicted' to what you do. if your not, you slack. you gotta want to feel a burn and enjoy it. I had this when i did XC, i was 'addicted' to the burn and pain of running which made me go that much faster and harder. Also if your cocky and overly confident(but without bounds of your weight) then you will do better. youll get a higher 'adrenaline' buzz doin shit. Even though im not the biggest guy, i lift like im the biggest guy and putting up 600+ pound deadlift when im only actually doin 210. All bout pushing your limits and bein 'cocky' that you will.

more on cockyness - I found that when i was playing soccer that if i was in a cocky mood and thought i was the best, i played better than if i was in a lower stated mood and was 'intimitated' by people. Depending on the sport your cockyness can also fuck with your competition making them mad and theyll start getting sloppy.

i say who the fuk cares about genetics

dorian yates never had genetics, look at him before gear, he had no potential

yet he still won olympia and became a monster

IMO if u wanna be a monster, u can become a monster

Yeah man I'm going to have to stop you right there. Everyone has a "genetic potential(in terms of muscle)" that is the maximum amount of muscle your body will be able to hold. Everyone has different genetic potentials, different limitations imposed by their genetic structure. 99.99% of people never reach their genetic potential in terms of muscle. The point I am trying to make is that if your a 6 foot, 150 lbs. ectomorph then if even you worked out religously for your entire life you would reach a point where you could not add any muscle mass. This being said it is impossible for some people to compete simply because they are not predisposed for lifting. So yes, genetics make or break you, consider yourself lucky you werent screwed in the genetic lottery.

which part??

The if you wanna become a moster you CAN??

If you don't believe that, you've already lost the fight...just quit.

I think he was referring to the part about dorian yates having bad genetics and no potential, because if that was true then he would not have become Mr Olympic multiple times and wouldnt have been considered to have one of the best backs of all time.

Ah...

Dorian had a ton of potential and great genetics. Agreed.
