Measurements

Ever read the stats for models or fitness models or competitors? Do you know your own measurements? My roommate is taking this class called Social Evolution, in it she learned that testosterone corresponds to waist-hip ratio. Supposedly the average female has a waist-hip ratio of between .75 and .78. In studies, men rated women with ratios on the lower end as more attractive (and interestingly, this supposedly corresponds to lower testosterone levels). I decided to measure myself, just to see what my ratio was. It is .805 which I suppose means I have more test than the average lady.

Then I decided to do the chest-waist-hip measurements just to see where I am in comparison to the measurements I read about in mags and stuff. I measured around chest and back right under boobs (and this is not the same as bra size), around waist, and around hips (hips as marked by hip bones). My measurements are 32''--29''--36''....is that unusually uncurvy? Because I know I have read that ideal measurements are more like 36-24-36. Anyways, just wondering everyone else measures at. And especially I am curious as to what everyone's waist-hip ratios are, if the more successful muscle-builders (naturally speaking) have larger ratios and therefore more test.
 
Social Evolution doesnt apply very well to modern man (IMO).
We're TOLD that men are naturally more attracted to larger breasts and hips because they denote greater fertility and trigger an instinctual desire to successfully procreate.
Are we (men) so primative (dont answer that, purely rhetorical! :D ) that we are still instinct driven in our search for a mate? God I hope not.
On the flip side of that coin, women are instinctualy programmed to prefer older men. Receding hairlines were a sign of age, and age denoted a man who was smart enough to have lived that long. This person must therefore be an able provider, and capable of providing for his mate and future children.
Last time I looked, balding guys were striking out!
So Social Evolution is kind of shaky. I feel that our Social views are as much a matter of current trend as any evolutionary instinct.

I fully appreciate a nice set of hips. I really do. But a slimmer set of hips is equally attractive, and as for breasts, I prefer smaller without a doubt. The wives are an A and a B respectivly, and I find that to be just right! They both want implants, and I could enjoy larger breasts, but I like a smaller chest (they never believe my saying that).

The chest, waist, hips ratio probobly has some validity to it, but I dont read too much into these things, they are never created with us in mind (for example, the BMI index which places Dorian Yates as morbidly obese)

At 32-29-36... are you very lean with that 29? If not might you actually be a 26 (or 24?). 32-26-36 is actually quite curvy, just a thought.

I have all of my fat in my midsection. Well, not ALL of it, but the majority. I think I'm at just below 20% body fat right now. I got to a 28'' waist once, and I think I felt like I could still pinch about an inch there. So at best I think I could have a 27'' waist. Smaller than that would require rib removal, I think. At 32'' my back probably sounds scrawny, especially compared to Spatts' 40'' :google: I'm a D cup though so I guess it makes my waist look smaller than it is. Still, I could use more muscle on my ass like Spatts has...perhaps in a year or so I can be telling you of my 40'' hips that go back not wide. :D
 
I wouldn't stress so much about what is printed anywhere about any "ideal". The way I look at it, if I like what I see then that is good enough for me. If I am dissatisfied for any reason then I do what needs to be done to get satisfaction or I just shrug and eat another donught..... Works for me. :D

My measurements are 35-26-36 and my waist-to hip is .72
(But I was always told ta measure chest right along the nipple line.):confused: And that the ideal waist-to-hip ratio for a woman was .85 or less. My measurements may sound ALMOST ideal but they are not!!! I am 5'6 118lbs w/ 16%BF and I'm scrawny and weak as hell!!! To me, your measurements sound IDEAL! SO you just go out there and rock those curves of yours. Who cares what they say you "should be" as long as you look good and you're healthy.

BM: I'm sure you don't even think of eating doughnuts.lol:)
 
i honestly do not know one person who is actually 36-24-36.

And whoever does, is going to have a very hard time finding clothes that fit!!!

any pants with a waist of 24 or 25 will have a max hip of 33-34..more likely a 32.
 
34-25-35. I read measurements from time to time over here and was curious so I measured myself a few weeks ago. 5'7, 133 right now, 17-18% bf. Finally putting on weight again but getting smaller. ;)
 
well you can all relax, coz I'm a whopping 40-34-40 - fat around the midsection but not the ass for some reason. I look like a tubby guy from the side, if it wasn't for the breasts.

When you all measure the chest, are you measuring across your boobs? Because when I say 32-29-36 I am measuring underneath the boobs. But if If I measure chest across the nipples then I am 37-29-36. And that sounds better, :)
 
Has anyone heard/read anything to suggest that the waist-hip ratio does indeed correlate with testosterone levels? I might get my test levels checked just out of curiosity, its a $20 blood test. Has anyone had their's checked before that knows their measurements (waist-hip ratio is waist divided by hip)? That'd be an interesting little study.
 
I always find these kinds of threads interesting. I was trying to get the ladies on another board to post their wrist measurements cause I've always thought I have some thick bones with wrists 6 3/8", or at least for my height. Anyway, my measurements, not what I'd LIKE them to be mind ya, but I am 5'5" 140 lbs, 15% BF, 36-28-37 (across the boobs), so rounded, .76 ratio. So how 'bout it ladies, also, what are your wrist measurements, right across the wrist bones? Maybe I need to just start another thread...

Where do I measure for HIP?

Is it around the widest part, which for me would include the butt?
Or is it at the hip bones, which really does not include the whole butt?

Okay, okay, so I rounded, ya got me, lol! I rounded down on my waist and hips. Technically, I'm 36-28.5-37.5 but it still gives a ratio of .76. I just hate having to say the half, would rather keep them whole numbers, towards the smaller end, LMAO! Both my hip and waist measurements have gone UP since I've been lifting, waaaahhhh! When I graduated HS, at 5'5" and 120 lbs, my waist was 26, hips were 36 and they've only gone UP since then damn it. I guess I should stop worrying about it cause I actually look better now with more muscle and less fat. Weird though how those measurements went up. I'm convinced it has to be because I've added oblique mass and mass to my butt cause my hips have never carried much of any fat and my obliques actually show so I know I'm not carrying much of any fat around my waist either. Oh well, I know I must be doing something right though when my husband can't seem to keep his hands to himself! :lmao:

I move the tape measure up and down til I find the widest part then measure there and it happens to be right across the meatiest part of my butt.
 
Wrist measurments are a fairly effective way to estimate bone structure. As no muscle will grow at that particular point of the wrist, it is a way to get an estimate.

Most "hardgainers" have fairly small wrists (among men). Large wrists denote a large bone structure, and those are usually people who gain easily (again, not a constant, but fairly close to correct).

My wrists are close to 9 inches... it makes buying jewlery a bitch!

Before I got implants, my chest measured 33, but that was all pec and back. No breasts except nipples.

Two years ago hip/butt measured 36. Carried most my fat there. When I lost the fat, I had no butt, so for past year have been madly trying to build and added an inch out back!

I wish I had a little more width in my hips, but the bone structure isn't there. So having the breast implants gives me some much-needed curviness and balances off my muscular legs. I've never had kids, does that make the hip bones open wider and stay that way after birth? (not planning to get pregnant for that though!)

How do I measure my wrist? Do I measure at the little knobby wrist bone, or do I measure the narrowest part just below that?

That's interesting. Since my wrists seem fairly large for a woman, I've always thought I had a large frame but apparently there is a difference between being large framed and having thick bones cause after seeing pics of other women and just being more observant, I found that I actually have fairly narrow hips (my bubble butt makes my hip measurement big, lol) and shoulders compared to the majority, yet my wrists are big. And I can put it on (muscle & fat) like there's no tomorrow but getting rid of it is REALLY hard! Put it this way, I went thru 6 weeks of basic training which is mostly cardio and actually GAINED weight! I put on 7 lbs that has never come off since then. I put on another 5 lbs at my first base, just exercising and eating good, then another 8 lbs when I started lifting free weights seriously. And now I've been cutting for 8 months now and STILL weigh the same! The fat is coming off ever so slowly, ugh.

FitFossil, measure your wrists right across the bones, yeah, the knobs. :)

If someone does NOT come forward with 7 inch wrists I'm tempted to change my avatar to showcase my fat wrists instead of my pussy....Then you all can give me a routine for my damn wrist workout!

Okay, will someone please enlighten me here? How can someone increase their wrist size OR have fat wrists? I don't know about anyone else but my wrists are just bones and I don't even see how it's possible to add mass to wrist bones unless you're really fat. My wrist bones stick out from the rest of my arm. So you all are confusing the heck out of me with these comments about fat wrists and making wrists bigger. I thought they were just bones. :confused: And I didn't think it was possible to add anything to your wrist bones unless you're so overweight that the fat is overlapping them or something like that. :confused:
 
I'm taking pictures....I got boney ass wrists but they still are 7 inches! My hubby informs me that I have big hands as well...Jerk!I'm looking at my hands in relation to the updated pic...I have big hands too...lol I'm doomed!

I'm sticking with my VIVA LA THICK WRISTS...

Oke i had to find a tape mesure with inches to join this discussion.

My wrists are TINY for me, just over 6 inches, but with very wide hands.

My bone structure is mixed as i have a very wide clavicel, but my knees are also small.

Oke i think i am the giant ass size queen here. I have 16% bf but still 42 inches of ass.

spatts, i could invent my own new squat type, the ass squat. Feet slightly wider then sholders, head up, stand up straight...now place an olympia bar on top of your ass.....no need for harness or to hold it of course.....

So far it looks to me like the average is somewhere between 6-7". Cool, this is satisfying my curiosity. Maybe I'm average after all, and not thick-boned like I thought. And it seems like bone structure is as varied as something like skin type. I'm thinking that bone size/thickness goes along with race, as in Asians tend to have smaller bones as compared to Americans and Germans. Good stuff. ;)
 
spatts, did you say they did not tell you your total T levels? Just that it was like a 40 yr old man? Sounds like your levels was very like mine. A 40 year old untrained man would be in the low normal T range probably.

I read a lot of it before i had mine done. The range for a man is 220 -850 or so ng/dl. My total T was 222, and my total free T (the stuff not bound by SBGH and is ready to build muscle) was very high.

Is THIS why magdelana thinks of seks every 2.3 seconds?? ;) ;) ;)

:lmao: Cool, see, this is what I'm talking about. I used to think that bone thickness and frame size went along with height, meaning the taller you are, the larger and longer your bones. But obviously that is not the case as I'm the same height as you but I have 6 3/8" wrists. It seems I am stockier cause my feet seem more wide than long and I wear a size 7 in men's Nikes. My feet don't even fit well in women's shoes, I prefer the fit of men's shoes. Usually if I buy anything with a heel on them, I have to buy an extra wide size cause they make them too darn narrow for my big, wide foot to fit in! And my toes and fingers are pretty short, heck, my pinky toe is SOO short that it doesn't even have room for a joint in it, it looks like a stub, LMAO! And my toes all line up perfectly with the longest one being my big (first) toe. Also, I seem to have short legs and a long torso. I think there probably is a correlation between bone size and muscle though, possibly because thicker bones are capable of carrying more muscle mass. Cause I've NEVER had a problem putting on muscle and I've always thought I look kinda stocky. My mom says our heritage (PA dutch) are all stocky. My body seems like it's practically a mirror image of my mom's, same build and everything. LMAO, and you thought YOU'D be scaring people! When I get started on something, LOOKOUT! I have a really bad habit of giving out TMI! :lmao:
 
Oh, and now I really want to get my testosterone levels checked, you all got me really curious now. I seem to be able to put on muscle easily so I'm curious to know if it's because I have fairly high testosterone levels or just because I have a genetic predisposition to carry more muscle mass, separate from test levels. I'm thinking it's the latter cause my sex drive doesn't seem to go along with having high test levels. :( I'm on B/C pills so I can't help but wonder if that's what is stifling my sex drive cause the week I'm off the pills, is when I start getting horny. Damn B/C pills. :mad:

my hips and waist grew 2" on me... i think i'll add in a bit of cardio... what do you think spatts? i'm still bulking but i am not sure if i should have measurements like that... argh..

i'm 34-26-37.5

my wrists are 5.75"

at the same token i feel like i still look as lean
 
i'm just not used to being this "big" before i guess... i know that must sound so ridiculous! i think i thought i'd have measurements that wouldn't change but i'd be tighter... i'm a geek i know. :nerd:
