What is a heavyweight to do lunges with? How far are you suppose to step forward when doing them? I should know this being that I had a personal trainer's license, but I never used it and I haven't done lunges in years.
im a powerlifter and this is what i do. i do them with a barbell overhead instead of on my back. and i step as far as possible out to avoid it being mostly quad, but focus more on hams/glutes/hips.

Don't step so short where you exceed the knee toe line, and don't step so far where you're going well beyond 90 degrees.
I just started doing lunges since I'm getting away from squat due to lower back problems. I also do them on the Smith machine to give me a bit more stability. I've gone as heavy as 275 for 8. I'm not sure what that would equate to with free weights. Hopefully, I can get to using free weights soon.
