Lower back predicament - suggestions?

hey everyone. I've been having trouble with my lifting routine. I'm doing the single factor 5x5 and everything is great except for the lower back exercises :(. i THOUGHT i was doing everything correctly, but apparently i am not because 2 different people (both bigger than me and i'm guessing smarter when it comes to lifting) have told me that i was doing my lower back exercises wrong. 1 told me i was doing deadlifts wrong and the other said my bent over rows were being done wrong. And both guys said that i could seriously injure my back if i kept doing them how i was doing them...

so for the past 3 weeks i haven't done any deads or bent over rows because i am scared to hurt myself. I have just been doing hyper extensions (2 sets - 1 with 10 lb weight and 2nd with a 20 lb weight)

but i was thinking this can really screw my body up if my upper and lower body continue to grow, etc. and my lower back stays weak and doesn't grow to support the rest of my body. I have tried to make my form on deads and bent over rows look EXACTLY like internet simulations but they still hurt rather than burn in the good way letting you know you're doing them right so i know i am NOT doing them correctly. So do i have ANY alternative to deads and bent over rows to work out my lower back? ANY suggestions at all?

or should i go back to deads and bent over rows and go REALLY light weight and just try to have perfect form even though it probably won't be totally right?

thanks in advance all!

This is not a rude reply.

I've recently read a lot of posts and threads about the deadlift. Lots of good info in just the last week.

I just popped the word deadlift in our Search and it gave me the posts. Perhaps there is some info in them you'd enjoy.

i've read up on most of the DL/rows threads. I am currently doing them slowly and trying to keep form. I've tried changing things here and there like my grip on DL but my lower back continues hurting rather than burning. So i don't know whether to stick to DL and bent over rows or to just try different back exercises altogether with dumbells maybe? :worried: i don't know what to do

Would it be possible to get a video of you performing teh exercises? Gt views form the side and you'll see if in fact your form is what you think it is. If you're brave you can post 'em here too...

Oh and I second buying starting strength. I read it and I have put into practice some of it and am liking the results thus far.
