Jackson. You? And I have heard the same. From what I understand the physical aspects of the training are more or less the same, but the mental aspects of training have gone to shit. Dont get me wrong though, I firmly believe that America's fighting force is tough as hell, but the mind games we went through 10-15 years ago, imo, were vital parts of our training that I personally feel should never be scratched out.

see, the way I saw it, the entire purpose of basic training was NOT to learn how to shoot the rifle, nor to get in shape, nor to learn how to blow a claymore.

It was to slap the civilian out of us and turn us into a blank slate so that we could be "remolded" into a soldier.

first 3 weeks were pure hell. Constantly awake, constantly being yelled at whether we did wrong or not, constantly "beating our faces".

Then 2 weeks of BRM where they left us alone and smoked us only periodically.

Then, just when we were ready to burst, send 'em to the bayonet course.

What's the spirit of the bayonet?

TO KILL, TO KILL, TO KILL WITHOUT MERCY!!!

Then next, the pugil stick sandpit! YEAH BABY!!! Let them bust off the steam, get out their aggressions, pound each other with oversized

Then start to rebuild them back up. Privates are getting in shape, learning, getting confident, etc.

I don't know how they run things these days, but I can honestly say that basic was a great time, one that I would NOT want to go through again.

and that's the way it should be.

Went the same for me. I have good and bad memories from basic. All of the bad were from the first few weeks when I was still the spoiled, untrained, mentally weak punk kid. After that, I turned into the man I am today.

yup. my turning point was the pugil arena. I was (And still am) big, husky, strong, and slow as a tree sloth, and the drill sergeants loved to eat me alive for being a slow runner.

of course, the clique's develop quickly, so the faster runners liked to run their mouths at the husky guys and rip on them, so it was pretty tough.

then BRM.

then the pugil arena, where I pounded the shit out of some people in a nasty fashion. Basic was pretty fun from then on, since the skinny little bastards kept their mouths shut. :D

*sings*

I feel pretty....
