Married Couple, Employee Arrested After Metairie Drug Raid
Neighbors Say Man Sold Growth Hormone

UPDATED: 5:01 PM CST February 4, 2004

METAIRIE, La. -- Investigators have arrested three people and the probe is expanding after chemicals were seized Tuesday in what officials are calling the largest drug lab bust in the history of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

Edward Barton, 27, Natalie Barton, 25, and Christopher Durel, 26, face charges that include possession with intent to distribute an illegal substance, possession of a controlled substance and operating an illegal lab.

Tuesday at about 10:30 p.m., agents with the DEA and the Jefferson Parish Narcotics Unit, and members of the Jefferson Parish Fire Department and the U.S. Postal Inspector's Office confiscated more than a dozen containers from the home in the 4700 block of Tabony Street in Metairie. Hazardous materials crews were then brought in to help clear out the house.

Investigators said the Bartons were selling the substance GBL -- a precursor to the date rape drug GHB -- out of the home and over the Internet (http://liquidresearch.com/) . The Bartons allegedly were operating under the company name NuRave Inc.

In addition to the chemicals, agents also seized marijuana from the home, Sheriff Harry Lee said.

The Bartons have a 3-year-old daughter, who was present during the raid. She was placed in the custody of relatives.

Investigators are analyzing computer data and customer lists seized in the raid, and more charges may be forthcoming.

Neighbors told WDSU NewsChannel 6 reporter Heath Allen that the residents of the home were new to the neighborhood, were friends of the homeowner and had moved in a couple of months ago. Neighbors said a man who lives at the home made his living selling a growth hormone.

Oh boy. Can help but wonder about the other labs out there and how safe ordering will be from, from now on, or not be as the case may be.

I wonder if there is a research company with enough balls to try to take the now available market share. Somebody with balls could go in and out quickly to make some quick bucks. Then open up a new site with a different name when they think heat is gonna be turned on.

sux that some people have given that stuff such a bad stigma.

I still think they're mostly interested in two things:

a) people being stupid and selling recreational-type drug stuff like GBL. That pot sure didn't help matters.
b) people buying large quantities and therefore potentially reselling themselves.

I can't see them busting a guy's door in because he bought 3 bottles of liquid nolva. I've never used LR anyway.

The DEA now has a list of customers that ordered from LR. So they may be going after customers.

I may be wrong, but I don't think non-scheduled drugs are within the jurisdiciton of the DEA.

The FDA may have something to say, but the DEA? I don't remember LR offering up AAS or other scheduled items...

well i'll keep everyone posted with what happens to me... :(

i agree with dial tone on this one:
all i can say is that the guy who was contacted already lives in the south. I highly doubt they are going to go around the country investigating everyone who bought a vial or so. I can see them going through records looking for people who bought steroids/rec drugs/gbl (if they actually did sell this stuff). also for people who bought large quantities, since they could be seen as dealers.

The DEA can step in at anytime for many reasons. Here is their mission from their website: http://www.dea.gov/agency/mission.htm
Guarantee the dea was just wating for enough evidence to pin on them along with the slip up of having illegal drugs in their house.
