lifting fatality

Hell who knows all the factors. I would guess he was racking and it slipped. that would explain why it landed on the neck if it did land there. Hell maybe was holding is breath and got light headed or even passed out. too many things could of happened.

but the odds are pretty slim you are going to drop it on your neck and die. but you should always be aware ..

Good point ES. That sounds more feasable with the racking. Training is no joke. When you start moving weight, there is always a danger.

I just read on another board somewhere in England a 24 yr. old was killed while bench pressing alone w/o a spotter. Apparently, he dropped it on his neck. Just wanted to post it and remind us all the importance of lifting w/ spotters when going heavy. They said his father found him. What a shame. Be carefull bros!

terrible accident. ive seen a few @ golds- broken spine deadlifting on the SMith, cable snaps on behind-the-neck pulldowns (full stack + extra plates on top) & guy passes out & dislocated shoulder when bolt on reverse pec-dec drops out of place.

& of course in typical LA, lawsuits galore & those machines were pulled off the floor.

Hmm pec-dec breaks, cable snaps, and deadlifting on a smith....most of them deserved it, but its a good reason to avoid iso machines!

no-one knows if he dropped it on his chest or directly onto his neck, but either way a weight past 100kg pinned on your neck will suffocate you or not allow blood to your head, he would of most likely blacked out and unable to re-lift the weight.
My brother wrapped a towel around my neck and pulled tight once and i blacked out and went head first to the floor. You never know

A tragedy. I expect few of us bother with a spotter with weights we expect to lift but there's always a possibility of something going wrong in a bench press.
