lifting fatality

I just read on another board somewhere in England a 24 yr. old was killed while bench pressing alone w/o a spotter. Apparently, he dropped it on his neck. Just wanted to post it and remind us all the importance of lifting w/ spotters when going heavy. They said his father found him. What a shame. Be carefull bros!

That is a true shame....totally sensless death, absolutely no reason for it. just a kid with his whole life in front of him. Every so often you hear of someone training alone getting pinned on a bench.

s8nlilhlpr, usually when that happens, the bar does drop on the chest and it is too heavy for the lifter to stand up with, so naturally, it rolls onto the neck.

My friend had bar land on his chest once. Luckily he didnt have clamps on it so he just leaned the bar and the weights slid off the one side, then the bar launched the other way and put a nice hole in his wall.

Ahh ok, I assume mine was pretty light then, 'cause I just had a bruise. Well, that settles it, time for more overhead work 'cause I can safely dump that bar.

I am not trying to sound mean, as I feel badly for that person and their family, but couldnt they just let the bar fall to one side? It would only take a little push and momentum would do the rest. I have never heard of getting pinned like that and it rolling up to your neck. It must have been a very inexperienced lifter. That is ashame and seemed very preventable.

It really all depends. If you're working heavy weights into the 400's, it is not as easy to save yourself as you could getting pinned by say, 275. If the weight is pinned on your chest and it is too heavy to maneauver with, it will more than likely roll to the neck, it doesn't happen instantly, and I imagine it is a horrible way to go.....

Feel how you will about lifting heavy enough weights to kill/seriously injure yourself without a spotter, I know I sure have my opinion on it, but this kid paid the ultimate price, all I can say is it is a senseless death, totally preventable and uncalled for....a true tragedy.

Agreed. I guess my point is that I have been stuck under weight in the past....but to get pinned to the point that you cannot move the weight? That is odd. It is almost like you would have to try to lift far beyond my absolute max and just have the weight come straight down. I mean aven at my max, if I miss it, it is a miss by a few finger's spot-never straight down and pinned on my chest. I feel bad for the kid. I guess it is a good lesson for everyone to use a spotter when you are unsure.

Hell who knows all the factors. I would guess he was racking and it slipped. that would explain why it landed on the neck if it did land there. Hell maybe was holding is breath and got light headed or even passed out. too many things could of happened.

but the odds are pretty slim you are going to drop it on your neck and die. but you should always be aware ..

Good point ES. That sounds more feasable with the racking. Training is no joke. When you start moving weight, there is always a danger.

terrible accident. ive seen a few @ golds- broken spine deadlifting on the SMith, cable snaps on behind-the-neck pulldowns (full stack + extra plates on top) & guy passes out & dislocated shoulder when bolt on reverse pec-dec drops out of place.

& of course in typical LA, lawsuits galore & those machines were pulled off the floor.

Hmm pec-dec breaks, cable snaps, and deadlifting on a smith....most of them deserved it, but its a good reason to avoid iso machines!

no-one knows if he dropped it on his chest or directly onto his neck, but either way a weight past 100kg pinned on your neck will suffocate you or not allow blood to your head, he would of most likely blacked out and unable to re-lift the weight.
My brother wrapped a towel around my neck and pulled tight once and i blacked out and went head first to the floor. You never know

A tragedy. I expect few of us bother with a spotter with weights we expect to lift but there's always a possibility of something going wrong in a bench press.
