Life Changing Diagnosis

Well my problem started here: http://www.elitefitness.com/forum/showthread.php?t=475489

Three days ago I went to go see a neurologist for a muscle biopsy and an MRI and xray and stuff. My doc referred me to him after I had been having repeated rhabdmyolysis with cpk as high 40,000, muscle twitching and cramping as well as spasms. So he rulled out virus, enzyme def, inflamatory disorder, other drug induced thing which could cause these symptoms leaving nurological disorder of some sort being an option. So I go in to see the nero today and he tells me I may have lou gerhigs <sp> disease and there is no way to diagnosis it 100%through tests until the symptoms progress. I dont know how to cope with this. prognosis is horrible. this is insaine. I dont have it 100% yet but they wouldnt of told me this today if they didnt think this was the case. I dont know what Im gonna do. :worried:

I am so sorry, best advice I could give would be to either get a 2nd opinion as well research to see what is being done for the disease and what you can do.
Again, I am so very sorry.

Thanks for the support. Im not looking for pity. i dunno I just has to write this out for some reason. Im having a massive anxiety right now. oh god.

DO NOT PANIC....calm down....You don't know yet and they are wrong or jump the gun and it is not what they think..I'm praying for you and that you can find some peace until you have a answer

GG

Hmm I remember your other thread. Are those symptoms continuing? Black urine, etc?

Good luck man. You should go talk to somebody like a counsler, it will help you think through it.

Ya still, but im going in for dialysis, got have the shit put in my arm tuesday. Ive decided that I would rather live life they way I want, being active, lifting as long as I can, fuck my kidneys, Im gonna have fun, especially with such a shitty prognosis. Im going to see another neuro next week.

Your rhabdo caused renal failure? I'm sorry. I was wondering what happened to you since I never heard any more in that thread.

To be honest, I've never heard of Lou Gehrig's disease causing rhabdo. It can cause muscle twisting, muscle wasting, weakness, and paralysis, but I've yet to read anything about it causing rhabdo. Perhaps I'm wrong though.

Please keep us informed. I hope everything turns out ok! I also agree with the previous poster: get a second opinion!

Because my doc could not figure it out I finally went to a neuro. Since I have sever fatigue in my arms and my great grandmother had it this is suspected cause of my muscle strength and twitching. as far as the rhabdo I dont know if they are related but it spured all these other tests to be done.

Prayer and positive thinking are two of the most powerful forces in the world. I don't know you, but you will be in my prayers and I will have my dad add you to his prayer list. Keep us posted.

If it's any comfort, everything in life can be a blessing or a curse and NONE of us knows what the future holds. Last week my buddies girl friend hit a guy who ran a red light and he didn't make it.

Nothing is guaranteed in this life. If you "do" have this disease then make a vow to live life to the fullest. Determine in your mind to make it a blessing and not a burden.

If you want to PM feel free to do so.

You're welcome and that came from the heart bro. I lost my one brother a few years ago and his courage in the face of his illness inspires me to this day. I have a son who has Cerebral Palsy and he'll never walk, can't feed himself, will always need our care, but he's a tough kid with a great outlook on life and his problems.

He never complains.

No matter what you're lot in life is, face it with courage, and be positive. Choose to be a winner. We all have our crosses to bear. It's how we bear them that what defines us.

I'm not suggesting you will always be strong, or positive, or brave, or thankful, but if at the end of each day you go to sleep knowing you lived that day to the fullest you will win either way.

When my son was born I was very bitter and angry and I shook my fist at God and it took me several years to get over it. I now regret my weakness and lack of faith and courage, but I know I'm forgiven and that's the most important thing.

Trust me, this life is not the end of the road, it's just the beginning.

I suggest you read a book called "Be my Guest" by Conrad Hilton. It's an incredibley inspiring book. He was an amazing man.

This brought me to tears. I feel very selfish when I hear about your sons sitiuation, Ive had 24 awesome years and I plan on making the best of my life, a gift. I couldnt imagine having a child with that but im so glad to hear that he is being a trooper about the whole thing. Im always gonna keep that your quote close at hand cause that made me feel so good. I dont have much to say im speechless. Just been thinking alot lately.

Like I said if you ever want to talk I'd be more than happy to. I truly understand and thats why we're all here, to help each other along the way.

And to let you know you're not selfish at all. You're just being human. I just wanted to show you to let you know we all have burdens in our life, not a one of us is immune. True some have it worse than others, but I TRULY feel the more heart and courage you have the more you're given to carry.

My point of view is God must really think a lot of your courage and character and He will see you through.

Well tomorrow im going in for another muscle biopsy and EMG with another neuro, my friends brother(he'll def shoot straight with me). Keepin my fingers crossed. Thanks again Rupe you have brought alot of clarity to my sitiuation.

Best thoughts & prayers with you --- life has all sorts of challenges, but its still life. The alternative is not life, no challenges, no joys, no nuthin. There are many ways to get out of life what we want, but the important thing is to make the decision to get those things. And in the mean time. definitely get a 2nd, 3rd , 4th opinion, get the keywords and topics to research so you aren't left sitting there freaking out.

All my thoughts & prayers for clarity and the best for you.

K also to BigRupe --- good words from a good man!

You sound alot like my sister. She keeps tellin me to either "get busy living or busy dying", and no need to sit around thinking about it.

Ive joined an ALS board and they are helping me alot. Seems like there is alot of hope in the area of stem cell. Many people have had it done and recieved amazing results.

Before you start accepting that your life is over at 24 I would pick my ass up and haul my ass to the BIGGEST, baddest ass medical facility you can get to, if you have to go outside your insurance, DO IT! I don't think the doctors know what's wrong with you.

Don't accept a diagnosis of ALS with less than two independent neurological opinions (frankly, I'd say get three), at least ONE should be coming from a recognized specialist/expert in neuromuscular degenerative disorders.

Musclemom, your right. One of my good friends was diagnosed with cancer and it turned out to be mono. I hope that it is something else. Going to go see Nero number 2 in 45 mins. If this doc agrees than im off to neuro 3.

I really wish you the best.

... and think about contacting a big time hospital, some place like Johns Hopkins or Harvard ... you want cutting edge, top of the line facilities. You might have to spend a couple of days in the hospital for a full battery of studies.

Tests are all out of the way for the other neuro, so i'll be going back to his office on monday. I like this guy he is keeping me optimistic. He told me to make sure that "Ill let them do the worrying." I'm feelin really good today!:)

Hey Mav, Thanks for your reply... I can relate to you on that one... sometimes Ill get angry bout something but than you just gotta realize that it really doesnt matter. Just be grateful for the ones you love cuz when you need them theyll be there for you!

Great idea about speaking to others. Again at this point you don't know what your status is and I agree 10 years from now this disease will most likely be a thing of the past.

Especially with all the research involved in ALS that is funded by baseball players charities and others.

BTW that sounds like a cool doctor you have. I like his attitude.

Rupe, I had my girlfriend read what you wrote b/c of how much it moved me, "he seems like a very special person", she says.:) Anywyas my new neuro is a younger guy and we hit it off really well. He is very concerned but optimistic at the same time, I truely believe he cares. Great guy.

Well I was suppose to go in on monday but my doc had an emergency and the nurse said he'll call me. Well yesterday night I got a message from the nurse saying that I need to go in this afternoon... Keepin my fingers crossed.

I can totally relate to this...and I had no idea. My heart goes out to you ...

1st of all, thank you for reading my thread, my story and congrats on getting married this fall! :D

The story I told on here was 1/4, IF THAT as I had to cut "IT" short, about what I've went through. I've had my stem cells harvested ... miserable in more ways than I care to list, but if you'd ever like to know, I'll be happy to tell you. I WILL write a book one day ... and your story & experience, us both being in the mid 20's upon finding out our own issues, may help someone else one day .. & I think you should as BEST you can, stay positive, there will be LOWS, huge ones, and know that although we may be strangers, you have a family here, that do care, love, respect & value you, even if you never get to meet us in person one day.

Those I consider the most dear in my life, aside from my parents, I have found here at EF ... although few, some of the BEST and kindest individuals I have ever been blessed to meet.

Hang in there, rant, vent, CRY if you need to ... get out the negativity and in will come the positive ... If I could take your pain & add it to mine, I would HAPPILY ... without question .... I am a fighter... you TOO will be a fighter ...

Stay strong .. the mind is such a powerful thing ... You are in my thoughts :rose:

Slinky -- wow. That is one helluva girl you have there and you are truly one helluva guy to have found this helluva girl. Together you have the foundation for one helluva life together. It does sound like you've also got one helluv an adventure being presented before you and I for one would be very proud to be considered a part of the "people around you" who are your support, sounding board, rooting section and shoulder to lean on when you need it or even when you don't.

Love & support are the things that you can keep on giving, keep on receiving, never run out and actually "grow' more.

Shit, I'm still sniffing in happiness for you & your girl.... please keep us updated on your plans!

Oh man she is the best. When ever Im around her I get the whole nine yards, butterflys in the stomach, euphoric feeling, etc. She has made everything a'ok. Whenever Im down she knows how to just "be there " for me. I remember in the past at how I would be upset when relationships go bad but god truley was thinking of me cause I would have never met this great girl. You always wonder if someone is really gonna be there for you when it all goes wrong and she has proved that to me! ok enuff rambling, cant help it I just love her so much!:)

This is true bunny, Its crazy how much of an impact I have had on my friends in real life by the way Im acting about the whole situation. One of friends will say " man, Ive realized how special life is, I just want to go tell me wife that I love her." I feel so good that b/c of my sitiuation its making everyone realize how much beauty there is in life. I honestly can attribute all my strength and hope to my girl... like they say "behind every good man theres a great woman". Ive just be enjoying life so much lately, i know Im just on cloud nine right now and it is going to be a rollercoaster ride for sure, but Im gonna enjoy this high.

Good mornin GG! How you doin? Trying to get myself to go to the gym here, its been raining like three weeks straight up here in Maine so I sorta just wanna stay in the house. :) Feelin nice and lazy today. Went out to dinner with a bunch of friends last night... felt really good to be normal for a change.

i know that you said that you got a doctor that you really liked and trust but i think beth israel is one of the best in our area for neurol stuff.

I didnt go to boston originally for the ALS issues, That was for the black urine and turmor suspicions. I saw a Dr. Sears up here in maine but I will be going to boston again for a third diagnosis. I will look up beth isreal and see if I can get sears to call down there for me.

Thanks for chimming in Adam... are you a doc?

nope, at the moment i am a LA grad. i have a few friends in the med. field though. i do plan on getting into imaging, maybe cardiac ultrasound.
well take it easy. tomorrow the rain is supposed to stop. :)

Im currently in grad school for biochem but would like to make the switch. I got a 3.6 with a 29 on my mcats. I think with my academic performance I wouldnt have alot of trouble but with having this disease I wonder If they might be apprehensive about accepting me. Ive already applied at several before I was diagnosed and got a couple interviews scheduled later. Just curious if you might know.
I was originally interested in doing plastic surgery for pediatric burn victims but with my condition all surgery fields are def out of the question.

I can't see it affecting you getting into med school, although where you are placed/your field, they may take your situation into consideration due to the potential harm that can be done while treating a patient, making rounds, do you know what I mean? I am thinking you do ...

Are you even sure of the diagnosis yet?

Do I have it 100%... no, but might as well be... its symptoms are very obvious lately... tounge twitches (I bite it all the time) arm spasms, numbness, twitches etc, as well as increase in clumsyness(stubing toes, etc) and moments of uncontrolable cying. Have had endless tests, emgs etc and things all point at this. Keep in mind my gram had this... All other things, inflamatory disease, thyroid, enzyme are all negative.

Gotcha ...
on a whole nutha plane a can relate in some way, but my heart goes out to you & yours.. with the med school thing, I say go for it, PUSH for it ...

I wish you the best, always ... :rose: Stay strong ... crying fits are a beeatch eh? Remember to smile in there somewhere though :rose: and laugh at a few of the tears ... :bigkiss:

Hey man, I just finished my first year of medical school. Disease or no disease your numbers aren't super awesome but they are not bad. That should get you in somewhere. The ALS thing is tricky, of course there would be certain specialties that you wouldn't be able to do but there would be others you would. You could always be a radiologist or a pathologist. You could always do one of those and teach medical school when it is all said and done. I think a admissions committee will take you. It is up to you after that what you want to do.

i say go for it also. not getting accepted into the school of your choice is a downer i know all to well. but the way i see it is if they don't want ya it’s their loss. from the info that you gave you look qualified to go. the fact that you’re looking past your disease and determined to continue your education (and become a doc no less) should prove to them that you’re willing to fight for what you want and that’s all they can ask from any applicant.

Im planning on taking my mcats again I would like to get in the thirtys. Never retook a class either. 4.0 in sciences.
Am i gonna get in a big name school, hell no, but I know kids that were worse than me that got into med with grades worse than mine. My friend got into tufts with a 27.

Where are you going to school?? Teaching is something I ve always been interested in as well. I appreciate you chimming in bro!!:) What were your undergrad scores like going into med?

Im glad Ive gone this far in biochem b/c my one friend who has finished his res in plastic surg said that biochem was the one thing he wish he knew better. He said there is alot of emphasis on it in med school.

35 is very rare isnt it? My friends dad is the dean of a dental school and he said if I could pull a 32 I would be all good. Well Im scheduled to take it a 2nd time in august so hopefully I do better.

I'm sorry about your diagnosis of ALS. I would definitely get that third opinion. I understand how life changing a diagnosis like this can be. It's not something I would wish on anyone. I hope that everything works out for you. You already have one thing going for you, your girlfriend and you are fighters, and that will help more than you ever thought.

Good luck.

I think you'll be fine. A 35 is in the upper 90's in terms of percentile but it is just a test and a number. Just study your tail off and you'll be fine. My heart goes out to you about your diagnosis but you're probably tired of hearing about that now. If I can ever help you with your road to getting in medical school just ask.

You never get tired of it sweetie :rose: that's what many people don't understand .. it's the support that helps more than anything, even repeated a million times over ...

You're right, I don't know first hand how it feels. I just want to help in any capacity I can! How have you been?

You know where to find my log for those details ... :)

Checkin' up on slinky mostly :)

Quick "hi" to slinky & the gang. That's awesome about your pursuit of med school --- talk about 'no limits' approach to life! My life has been a bit of a random walk but one thing about pursuing education is that once you get it, its yours forever. Sometimes you have to wander around a little to find just where you fit in w/ what you want to do and where you are needed - but some how life brings you where you need to go... Its sorta cool that way....

Best wishes for a kick ass Monday... another week, another step forward.

I know EXACTLY how you feel bro. Tell me do you break out in an uncontrollable smile when you see her???

I missed your post there... Yeah Im tellin yeah if you ever get in a rough sitiuation it helps to have a strong girl there with you. This is gonna sound weird but almost the happiest right now than I have been in a long time. I know its not always gonna be like this but Im enjoying it while I feel this way.

It already sounds like you are doing this, but the most important thing to remember is no matter the diagnosis, don't let it control your life. I know that sounds hard to do when you are facing a battle like the one you're facing, but you need the time where you can be you. Keep chasing your dreams and goals, have fun, most of all live life. That is one thing that everyone should remember, no matter their health.

Just droppin in to say Hi Slinkster!! :wavey:

I use Ambien nightly (5mg) and it definitely helps me fall asleep. I don't feel groggy the next morning, etc......might want to ask your Dr. about it.....

Hope you get some sleep tonite!! :rose:

hey slinky...just read every post! keep your head up....

as far as sleep is concerned try lunesta....ambien doesn't work for me and it's addcitive. i've been on lunest for about 3 months...pretty much every night...it's approved for long term use. i wake up feel great...i get great sleep with it too...before that i would get 1-3 hours of sleep a night tops...basically fell asleep out of exhaustion....within an hour of taking it i'm pretty much in la la land...it';s a godsend i would try it. i started off on 1mg...then 2mg..then 3mg..now back down to 2mg. b/c i want to try and come off it soon. good luck!
