Legality regarding my termination?

This is how everything went down.

On Wednesday, August 31st, my employer went into literally a psychotic rage regarding the uncleanliness of his practice (I was a Vet Tech for those that didn't know). He took us from room to room pointing out things such as dust and crooked pictures. I was a little surprised because no one had informed me of such things before this but I was ok with that part. He then started yelling about some ceiling tiles that were stained due to an a/c problem. He said that we should have replaced them or have someone replace them. Also due to the a.c problem, there was insulation falling down which he told us to rip down. During this time, I'm thinking to myself that I wasn't hired to do carpentry and janitorial work. Sure I expected to sweep up and clean cages after work but carpentry work was I thought a little outside the realm of a Vet Tech.

Later that day he called me up to his office and stated that I had not been performing the way he expected. He said if I couldn't handle all the responsibilities that I could leave right then. Even though I disagreed with a lot of what he was saying, I told him I understood and promptly went back to cleaning. The very next morning, the Sr tech told me they had to let me go. I told her that I was just informed the day before that I was not meeting expectations and had no warning before this. She said she didn't understand either. I then asked her how many people have come before me because of this and she said a lot. So to me and my friends, it sounds like he had already planned to fire me which is really fucked up considering I had no warning or absolutely no hint that I wasn't performing.

I always wondered why they only like to hire inexperienced vet tech. Their reason was that they like to mold them into their kind of tech. What I think is that they hire unexperienced techs because they know experienced techs would not do all the unrelated work that he requires.

I have already file with unemployment but my friend also suggested reporting it to the EEOC which I'm not too familiar with. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd like to hear them

From the little experience/knowledge I have, a lot of it comes down to the job description - how it was communicated to you, how it was written, etc.

Were you ever informed before this time that that kind of work would be required of you? Doesn't sound like it and if it just being heaped upon you now, he should give you time to perform the needed work and a new job description.

I would urge you to look into it and see what you come up with.

Fucking bastard! of course that kind of people know how to take advantage of others. Unfortunatelly, you'd need a lot of money for a good lawyer. I've seen that situation in some of my friends before.

I think the EEOC is for cases of discrimination based on gender, race, etc. I do know that there are lawyers who specialize in employment laws. Most lawyers will give you an initial consultation free or for a small fee. They will at least know if you have a potential case.

Anyway, sorry to hear that. It sucks getting screwed by your boss.

Bro, lawyers specialize in anything when they see money. LOL

I think som may depend on your state. I know here in Neveda it is a right to work state. Which basically means your boss can fire you for just about anything (except because of race or gender and things of that nature).

What happened in case, I doubt there is too much you can do. And I doubt it would be worth the trouble. It sucks being fired from a job but it would be best just to move on and get another job.

Who wants to work for an asshole anyway.

yea I just remembered that Florida is an at will state so termination can be anything from performance issues to the employer not liking you. I wasn't really looking to form a suit of any kind but just ways to possibly make him stop treating his employees the way he does.

Yep - if you're in an "at will" state they can fire you for any reason or no reason at all, provided it doesn't violate any of the laws (like race, gender, etc). It's not illegal to treat your employees like dirt, either....
