leg/hip pain after squats

superwife

New member
I did 2 sets of light squats this morning and after I finished I had serious pain in my right front hip area. I felt a little tight while doing the squats but after I finished it hurt to step forward. I tried to stretch my hip afterwards but when i pulled my right leg forward and left back, I couldn't do the stretch becuase it hurt too much. Any ideas what I did and if I should worry?

Thanks so much.

Do you have a vid? Are you throwing your hips forward at lockout, rather than just coming to an upright position?

Did you warm up enough first. It can be difficult to get warmed up early in the moring after sleeping all night so you may have pulled something. Otherwise Spatts' question on form could be a key.

Cheers,
Scotsman

Sorry, no vids. We are too slack to buy a new dig camera...

I don't think I am throwing my hips forward.

And I only hurt on one side... it feels kind of like I lodged a baseball in front of my hip and it is pressing uncomfortably when I bring my leg up towards my chest...

Does that make any sense?

Yeah, sounds like your hip flexor is strained....the question is why. Hyperextending it is the obvious concern, but if you're not doing that, I dunno. You may just need to work on flexibility there.

Here's just a thought on a way to help your hip flexors, for what it's worth, take it or leave it.

Do some box squats, but start out on a box a few inches above parallel. Every couple weeks, switch to a slightly lower box, so that eventually you're doing them at or just below parallel. Not sure if that would work, just seems like it would help hip flexor strength and flexibility. Good luck.

When I started squatting I would always limp for a few days afterward. My problem was a lack of flexibility in my hips. It went away by itself after a while. Try to work on hip flexibility.

are your squats with a wide stance? if so, I believe you should always use groove briefs or a suit with straps down when training. This will hold your hips together.

On the other hand, the briefs could mask a weakness in her form that will come back to haunt her later if she doesn't fix it now. I saw her lock out her deadlift, and the first thing I told her was just stand up, don't throw your hips forward. That's why I wondered if she's doing it when she squats too.

I might be throwing my hips forward...I'll get backlash to watch me next time...

My hip flexors are ok, I think. I have been working lately especially to stretch them. That is what I tried to do after I hurt it this morning but I couldn't pull my leg forward to get the stretch.

I have been doing box squats. I was supposed to do them this morning but I didn't because I decided to do deads instead.

I think I was fully warmed up when i did the squats. I had already done all my sets of deadlifts... maybe i hurt it there (throwing them forward like oyu said) and I didn't notice until I did the squats...

Thanks for all the input!

Well I didn't see your squats, but I think you might have been throwing your hips forward on your deads as Spatts mentioned.

If the pain is on your hip in the front, but you think your hip flexors are ok, then where is the pain?

I guess i meant that I think I have been good about stretching my hip flexors...that might not mean that they are ok :)
