We fix these all the time. They are also known as SLAP lesions. They are a pretty common problem among throwing athletes, swimmers, and older people. They are also a very easy fix. Definately have it done arthroscopically, it will cut recovery time in half. Also get a second opinion and be sure that your Dr is a shoulder specialist. I work with a shoulder specialist twice a week doing Slaps and Bankhart lesion repairs, you definately do not want an amateur at arthroscopy fooling around with your shoulder.
