Knocking out baffles on motorcycle pipes?

If i got a used bike with stock pipes how do i knock out the baffles?

Ive altered the deal. Pray I dont alter it further.

oh SHIT I can't quite place that quote. Fuck!

Method for pulling out the baffles varies from one set of mufflers to another. Talked to the dudes on my Triumph board to get the method for mine. On mine you gotta disconnect them from where they attach at the headers then there's kind of a flange on the inside of that end you can detach and push them out the other end. Sounds fricking AWESOME w/o them. Definitely gave me a noticeable power boost too. Bet I'm up around 95hp now.

Quote was Vader when he fucked over Lando in Empire movie
i think i would also have to re-jet the carb or something. Which would sound better: custom pipes or knocked out baffles?

if you knock out the baffles you could seriously ruin the performance of your bike. Custom pipes are meant to work with the bike and some of them come with the recommended new jets to go with em. The smaller CC bikes especially need that back pressure for low end torque. The custom pipes are usually designed so that the cool new sound doesn't fuck up your low end punch.

i don't have a clue what any of that means, but if it has anything to do with making it louder dont.

Why
loud pipes kick ass, plus give awareness to other drivers of my presence. Bikers need all the help we can get out there bor

Ok i will some VH pipes or something. Knocking out baffles always sounded jimmyrigged or something not the best

It depends on the bike, and on a lot of things. It's true that the back pressure needs to be there, in most cases (not true in a turbocharged engine). I agree that buying custom pipes is the way to go for motorcycles and gas-powered non-turbo cars & trucks. I have custom pipes on both of my street bikes ('85 Honda VF1000R crotch rocket and '85 Yamaha V-Max muscle cruiser), and they're good 'n loud, and they were designed by engineers who know what they're doing. It's very different on turbocharged engines in cars & trucks, and some rare turbo bikes from the 80s (wish I could find one)... I have a straight 4" pipe on our Chevy 4x4 Duramax, and straight 2" pipes on my Toyota turbo-Diesel pickups and my turbo-Diesel Camry. No mufflers or resonators of any kind. Just pipes. Those are 100% quiet until you put your foot in it, then you hear the turbo spooling up and screaming really nice! It shocks the hell out of people to see an old-lady-style silver 4-door Camry making that noise and belching out a plume of black smoke, as it leaves Corvettes back in the smoke cloud ;) .

I also have to agree with both Redshirt27se and Superdave, in that I hate noisy bikes passing me and blasting out my left ear drum, but I also don't want to be explaining to some guy's wife & kids that I didn't see or hear him, and hit him. So I understand the need to have motorcycles loud enough to hear coming up on you.

So this now begs teh question which pipes are best? I want the sound really deep and throaty and loud. The bike is 2004 VStar 650 custom

depending on the outlet, you can also just drill a few large holes in the material surrounding the outlet. . .this effectively bypasses the baffle without having to remove it.

I'd check with a Yamaha owners forum, and see what other V-Star owners liked. My V-Max has factory collector pipes, and Vance & Hines quad slip-ons. Those were on it when I bought it, so I can't really give any opinion on why they were chosen. I like them, and plan to leave them on as-is.

you should know there is only so much you're gonna get from a 650. If it's too wide, like I said the performance will take a hit and it will sound like garbage. There should be websites for your bike that have audio files of what the different exhaust packages sound like. That's how I chose pipes for my magna.

Gotta read your bike board, brocephus. Those guys are gonna be the experts on your engine.

It's true a small displacement engine is more likely to suffer torque loss from decreasing backpressure, but how much is enough? Or too much? Just depends.

Could be that your OEM setup might be pretty restrictive so you could well knock out and cut down your stock baffles and reinsert them. I've read guys on my Triumph board doing that. The Triumph twins have notoriously restrictive exhausts, so we can totally run without them on these 865cc engines, but you might need to cut down and reinstall.

Know that often horsepower and torque production gains are mutually exclusive. Stuff you do to get more of one can reduce the other. Just depends on what you want.

chica know her shit right here^^

rip out your bottom end and the bike loses it's launch for a few extra on the high end. For me, I'd rather have the low end torque.....no need to be going 115-120 in a cruiser imo. For me being able to crack the throttle and get out of trouble is more valuable......but than again it can also get you in trouble, lol.

Yea i definitely dont want to lose bottom end. To be honest my bike sounds pretty good as is but since its a 650 there just might not be a lot more there if i added pipes and i risk losing bottom end which is no good.

Dave if you're looking for easy bolt-on mods, check on doing an airbox delete. I would expect they are cheap kits for your bike.

Look at it on my bike

It's just a CAI for a bike. You'll need to rejet your carb probably, but it should return a nice power bump.

I guess thats just like a K&N filter on a car? I just started fucking with the bike and added 6" forward controls and lowered teh rear but dont want anything too complicated. That air delete thing could be cool thanks

I'd be careful of that, as it can throw off the mixture if you don't re-jet the carbs (or change the EFI chip in EFI Bikes). I tried a 4-stack K&N filter setup on my VF1000R, and I had to run the choke on all the time since I hadn't re-jetted. I put the original Honda air box back on, and it went back to normal. I never messed with the V-Max filters (yet  )

why? so you can go 182mph instead of the paltry stock 180..??

:lmao:

that's a ridiculous bike.....the new one is an absolute madman. I would have to ninja stalk that thing like a wild mustang horse everytime I wanted to ride it. Fuckin sick bike.

they'd be happier if you'd bought a 600lb 1300cc so they could rip on you for a newb buying such a big bike.

i'd like to knock the baffles outta rw. . .if she wasn't married. . .and i wasn't married. . .and i wasn't so dang old. . .and i didn't have so many kids. . .and my knees weren't shot. . .and. . .awwww. . .nevermind :sulk:

yep...and you'll lay down this one too at some point. Best advice ever given to me was drive within your parameters and when you do it lay it down the chances of it being serious are greatly diminished. My nickname with my boys was crash so you can guess how much I listened to that advice at the time. I was 22 so shit went in one ear and out the other. lol

Im 35 and drive ride pretty conservatively so if it gets laid down its probably going to be because of someone else

been riding since I can remember, never laid a bike over.

Well thats impossible because al i hear from everyone one is there are two kinds of riders, those who laid down and those who will. No doubt i keep hearing that from riders who have all wrecked

haha, yeah. I think the guys that have laid/wrecked their bikes say that to make themselves feel better.

I've seen a number of my friends go down, but they were doing stupid shit when they did.

The time I did it, I had a flat rear tire that I didn't feel, as I was riding in a strong wind. I found out about the tire real fast when I went to make a right turn! Got lucky; bumps & bruises and only a few scratches and busted mirror on the bike.

God willing we don't plan on laying one down, but I don't know anyone who hasn't. On dirt bikes, if you don't drop the bike now & then, you're not really into the sport. I just did a get-off after a hill climb last weekend, on our own property that I know like the back of my hand. I made it all the way to the top of a hill with LOOSE dirt, and turned to stop, and put my left leg right down a rabbit hole  ! Bike and I tumbled right back down the hill.....

Yes, i've wrecked dirtbikes, but that's a whole different ball game than riding on the street.

I've only dropped one on the street the once, but Bro, I know it can happen anytime like an earthquake. Maybe God forbid on my next ride, and maybe not for decades to come. But I have to say that the old idiom is very true; Motorcyclists are only in two categories: Those who HAVE gone down, and those who WILL.

There's also that factor of respect for fate and luck, if you ride with that in mind. I always assume that EVERYONE is going to turn left suddenly in front of me, and there is ALWAYS gravel, sand, a mentally ill person in a wheelchair in the middle of the road, and water around the next blind curve.
