Knee problem

I have a strange problem I've had for a while now but not thought much of it as it's not too painful. When I go down into a squat my left knee makes a slight cracking sound. Also, throughout the day, something which often happens is if I bend my leg as in to touch my buttocks with the ball of my foot, my left knee will pop. It also happens when I sit down, or sometimes when I move my left foot around while sitting, it will pop.

I'm sure it's related to weight lifting so hope this is the right forum :verygood:

If there is no pain, don't worry about it. It's called creptitus. It's normal in people over 40 or so. If it is associated with pain, have it looks at by a sports oriented doctor. It happens to me more when I'm not warmed up.

I agree with the above post. it happens to me sometimes, but i have realized that the more i warm up the less it happens. like you, i have no pain, so i do not think about it other then making sure i am good and warmed up.

The thing is, I'm only 19 and I've had it for ages. My knee must click about 50 times a day just doing various things e.g moving in bed. Pain or discomfort only occurs with slow heavy squats which feels like a tickle on the outer bit of the knee. Any particular reason I should have one of these?

It's sort of like cracking your knuckles so it isn't always age related. If there is pain, it's probably something else and you should have it looked at by a sports oriented doctor. It may be your IT band. Do you do a lot of running? That can cause it. Squatting can make it worse.

I have same issue and I'm 24 -but I think sprint intervals may to be blame, and for a while I was doing jump squats once per week.

I would see a doctor!

Simple sport rule: Pain (any amount) + cracking + poping = doctor visit

A quick exam and an x-ray could save lots of pain later.

To be honest, I don't do much running or squatting, but I think it could be related to being previously overweight? I'm not talking obese but I was pretty fat all through my childhood.
