We are totally killing our TV and going to be watching DVD's only. No Cable.

It's kind of scary but will be great for the whole family. We will be spending a lot more time outdoors. :)

Have any of you done this? Could you?

wont last. unless you call the cable company and disconnect totally.

Oh yeah... we are sending the box back and everything. Our big TV is coming down too.

I had four kids and NO TV for years and no, we didn't miss it.

I got a HYUGE TV and cable now and I still hardly ever watch it. so to answer your question - YOU DONT NEED TV! :)

That's horrible. If you get depressed, call me...lol...life is not over, it will just get very boring :P

Internet for me and DH on one of the 4 computers we have including two laptops, lol!

Mudpies for the kids.

No problem! I just won't be on EF as much I bet because I'll be with my kids more. That's always good!

this is precisely why you WILL be on Ef more now with no TV.

We only got TV when I was a freshmen in High School. DH learned perfect English from TV though. Lots of TV in his house growing up.

It'll be a fun challenge.

I unplugged my tv for about 2 months to study for the Series7 exam a long time ago.

I lived without cable for the last two years of my marriage because Shelagh claimed I "watched too much TV." It was my idea, it didn't help anything. :)

PS I turned on WWE because I knew it pissed her off. :)

It was my DH's idea. He is cracking up watching every single South Park we have DVR'ed  He adores TV but stays up too late.

Awesome choice, TV is the devil! I get like 4 channels and I could care less. Of course because of this you guys have to deal with me 24/7.

lol...it's our pleasure :)

having a tv is fine .. its setting limits which is the problem... you should not have to away tv to spend more time outside cause once the tv is back is back to old habits.. its like a smoker , you can take away their smokes but they will find something esle or smokes somewhere else , they have to want to quit .. just my 2 cents

good for you. all stuff on tv nowadays is cheap trashy crap. Quality has taken a back seat. Disgusts me what I see. You can thank all the 10,000 cable networks that have popped up out of nowhere. Eager to buy up any cheap content.

I never watch tv. Only DVD's. Odd, cuz i've had most of my career out of working in TV. Funny in a way. Just no time really.

I for one think you should change your name to Mr.Hollywood. C'mon, do it!!!

wow, I couldn't do that. I don't watch a lot of TV, but there are some cable shows I'll record for a rainy day. Also, I watch HBO once a week or so.

I lived without TV from 1995 till 2005. Most of that time I had a TV, just not cable. That way I could still watch things on the few channels I got, like news. I watched the news on 9/11/2001 with my TV with rabbit ears antennae.

I just got cable in december, before that I just had a tuner card in my desktop I never used... I read a lot more back then :bawling:

Exactly. It seems my main job as a parent these days is making sure homework and chores get done, getting them outside playing sports and limiting/managing TV, internet and video game time.

i couldn't do it!!! i think it is admirable that you are trying to

enrich your family.

i brought my boys up reading.......

we spent a lot of time in barnes and noble

the only tv i watch is major sporting events. not like i am leading this crazy life or anything; i'd just rather shoot the shit with friends or post on ef during my downtime

i havent had cable for over 2 yrs now. my son watches pbs shows in the morning before school. sometimes it sucks because I love HGTV and TLC but cant watch any of those shows. my son wants cable so back so he can watch nick and cartoon network like the other kids but lumberg installed a 10 ft antennae on the roof yrs ago and he just refuses to pay for cable

I did it. I haven't had cable since December. Trust me. You won't really miss it.

You're not kidding. I actually got tired up flipping through the channels and seeing the same old stuff over and over. Even the hbo and cin was the same cheesy movies replayed day in day out.
Only thing I really miss is the history channel.

I canceled cable about 6 months ago, but did keep the internet connected, obviously. Television is crap for the most part, and a good majority of what you see on television is available to stream through the net also. I personally don't have time for such trivialities and therefore decided to stop cut my expenses a little by disconnecting the idiot box.

I think you meant you lived without cable TV

Technically, yes. Even though I had a TV, it was almost never on. Things like 9/11, other big news stories, etc., I turned on some news for a little bit.

We watch some stuff. I think I watch more of the digital On Demand stuff. I'm basically paying for a very expensive video library because I can't deal with going to Blockbuster. Don't mention the one's by mail, our mailman is an idiot. I spend too much time in front of the computer already to even think about catching shows that way.

I do follow a few cable series but broadcast stuff is mostly a turn off. But my kids are grown so there's just the two of us.

CEO, thanks I really thought about events such as 9/11 when DH and I were deciding this. I was glued to the set back then.

One more thing about this is the commercialism of all the kid's channels (that they are watching as I type this, lol) They see all of these commercials and have to have all kinds of stuff advertised. It's really powerful. I'm sure a lot of commercials slip into my stream of brain too.

I used to read to my girls every night. All of us in the tiney cramped apartment. In bed by 8PM and I would read them to sleep. They would tell me all the time how much they loved the sound of my voice, that it comforted them and helped them to sleep.

We would pick out novels and I would read a couple chapters based on how much energy I had by that time of night. LOL

We were all of us snoring by 9PM!

.... good times.

I did it for a while. Now i have 1000+ dvds and cable again

you guys are all lunatics.....

Looking back, do you think it paid off?

WITHOUT A DOUBT...

All of my girls had (and believe it or not despite the fact that they have been in a terrible situation for 2 years now) very expansive vocabularies, they knew how to interact with people in real time (not just on the computer or texting, etc) and WE WERE VERY CLOSE because of this pleasant time we spent in the midst of hell...
