Killer Whale that really kills. I mean... DUH!!

CNN) -- A killer whale killed a trainer Wednesday afternoon at SeaWorld's Shamu Stadium in Orlando, Florida, a public information officer for the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.

The 40-year-old woman, identified by sheriff's spokesman Jim Solomons as Dawn Brancheau, was in the whale holding area about 2 p.m. when "she apparently slipped or fell into the tank and was fatally injured by one of the whales," he said.

But a witness told CNN affiliate WKMG-TV that the whale approached the glass side of the 35-foot-deep tank at Shamu Stadium, jumped up and grabbed the trainer by the waist, shaking her so violently that her shoe came off.

A SeaWorld employee who asked not to be identified confirmed the description of the attack and added that the whale involved is named Tillikum.

SeaWorld uses "Shamu" as a stage name for any of the male or female orcas in its shows.

"One of our most experienced animal trainers drowned" in the accident, said Dan Brown, vice president and general manager of SeaWorld Orlando. He said an investigation will be carried out.

"We'll make our findings known in due course," he said. "We've never in the history of our parks experienced an incident like this. All standard operating procedures will be reviewed." He would not elaborate.

"Please bear with us; we've just lost a member of our family," he said.

A patron who did not witness the event said the park refunded her entry fee, although a spokeswoman said the park remained open.

Guest David Dalton told CNN affiliate WFTV, "All of a sudden, out of nowhere, two of the bigger whales just kind of flipped out, going as fast as they could in the water."

A spokesman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals called the death "a tragedy that didn't have to happen."

Jaime Zalac said the organization had called on SeaWorld "to stop confining oceangoing mammals to an area that to them is like the size of a bathtub, and we have also been asking the park to stop forcing the animals to perform silly tricks over and over again. It's not surprising when these huge, smart animals lash out."

In 2006, a trainer at the adventure park was hospitalized after a killer whale grabbed him and twice held him underwater during a show at Shamu Stadium.

In 1999, Tillikum was blamed for the death of a 27-year-old man whose body was found floating on his back in a tank at SeaWorld, the apparent victim of a whale's "horseplay," authorities said then.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said the man apparently hid in the park until after it closed and then climbed into the tank.

The 11,000-pound, 22-foot-long whale was "not accustomed to people being in his tank" and "wouldn't have realized he was dealing with a very fragile human being," Solomons said at the time.

"He may have been a victim of what a whale would call horseplay, just playing around," Solomons said.

Same killer whale responsible for three deaths already.

3rd person this whale killed.. death row !
The whale's kill switch has been thrown.

It's a really fascinating thing to learn about, the brain of a predator. I was reading about this in a book called Animals in Translation, and then had a further opportunity to read about it when doing a smattering of research about wolf/dog hybrids. Once they learn that "humans = prey" (not food, notice they aren't eating the people, just killing them; they have to learn to eat them) that's all she wrote. The same thing happens with the wolf/dog hybrids (which is why it's so dangerous to have little children around them, the quick actions and running of a child mimic prey behavior and can flip the switch).

The sensible thing to do would be to euthanize the whale if they aren't going to release it back into the wild.

They should make a dunk tank for happy hour at twist(Or cutters) with that whale

The kill switch does exsist in humans too.

Enormous difference between human beings and any animal: Frontal Lobes. There is nothing that is the human equivalent of the overwhelming killing instinct that predatory animals have in humans because our actions are dominated by our frontal lobes with the notable exception that it has been proven (through neurologic examination, neurocognitive evaluations and imaging in FMRI) the brains of certain types of criminals (i.e., serial killers) are measurably different than those of "regular people."

I think MM should cast a spell making the killer whale nicer.
Musclemom thinks humans should generally leave the entire order of cetacea the fuck alone altogether. They shouldn't be hunted, killed, eaten, or jumping through hoops for our entertainment.

Use That whales head as a backdoor for Wilton mannors washa terias

Whatever would 75's people do if they were unable to eat squid, whale, dolphin and badger penis.

Free Willy!
I was so happy to hear the news today.
I also like it when bulls gore, rodeo horses maim, elephants trample, and zoo animals attack their handlers.
Four legs good, two legs baaaaaaaaaaaaad

I honestly can't say I'm sorry in the slightest. I'll agree with MM on one point, animals aren't meant to be put in cages/tanks for the bemusement of the feckless miscriant species known as the human being. The whole argument about "education and raising awareness" is utter horseshit meant to divert from the real reason we keep animals on display......"MONEY". If nobody gave a fuck about seeing a dolphin flip up in the air or a whale splash the crowd with it's tail.....how many animals would be kept in captivity in this world? Yeah, hardly any. THe only thing you accomplished by taking your kid to seaworld is to amuse the little one for an afternoon. That very night he/she is wondering where their next fix is coming from, probably already playing video games until mommy and daddy figure out their next parental manuever. Any kid that actually is taken with the animals and wants to be, say a marine biologist, quickly comes to despise the notion of caging these animals anyway.

THe only interaction that was supposed to happen between wild animals and humans is A)we kill them cause they came to close to us and/or B) we killed them for food.

hear, hear!

I don't think either one of you cares for the animals, rather you've taken this stance to elevate your selfesteem and give yourself a false sense of superiority.

that outta ruffle some feathers and liven this thread up a bit. Tee hee

Personally I wanted him to jump out of the pool into the stands and go into a feeding frenzy.

how is my self esteem affected at all? I stopped liking seeing animals in tanks/cages the moment I became old enough to realize that this was not their natural habitat. When your 5 you think the Lions are badass and they're perfectly happy to have 10 square feet of territory to patrol.

Try telling the people making the money from it all though.

And you wonder why we hunt them the way we do?

Besides, the whales are the LEAST of our worries:

I feel bad for the trainers, those guys do love the animals and working with them. Nobody gets into a tank with a 1,200lbs whale for the money. These guys truly do love the animals and their jobs, if there weren't any whales in captivity they would be out on the field working with them...

The ones who should be tossed in the tank are the greedy fucks who figure it is OK to put wild animals in captivity for the sake of making a buck.

!

and by that logic, we should throw say...pandas or any other endangered species into the wild and watch them disapear in oh...say a yr

I mean, if were gonna go with darwinism here, might as well go the extra mile

that better livening up of debate or what chris?

supposedly there are 2-3000 in the wild right now. not a lot, but seeing as they are a protected species, they aren't gonna go anywhere.

I could at least be on board with captivity of these animals if they only kept em for a few years and then let em back out. That's what they should do with the homeslice who's ghosted 3 people......dude obviously isn't feeling his surroundings so let him out for the fucks sake.

He'd have considerable ocean cred after offing 3 ngrs
