Just moved, and having internet problems. Please help!

So I just moved into a new joint, and we have our cable internet hardwired to both upstairs and downstairs. So after a few days I got sick of continually switching my modem from upstairs on the cpu to downstairs on the PS2, so I went and bought a second modem, figuring I solved the problem...but NO, my ISP wants me to pay TWICE just to register a second modem on the network, damn greedy mofuggers.

However, when the guy installed our internet, he said something about being able to put a router somewhere right inside the "main panel" where our internet and phone stuff is "based." So does this mean I could use a non-wireless router that I'm assuming goes into one of the ethernet ports I see available inside this main panel?

If anybody can help me out, or lead me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated. The internet works just fine when I physically move the modem everytime, but DAMN it's getting old already...and also it seems it should be unnecessary to deal with all the problems of a wireless router when everything is already "wired" as it is. Where's our resident internet technicians??!!??

Thanks :)

a wireless router is not a hassle
take back the second modem and buy a regular wired router or a switch or a hub. You can hook these devices to the main modem and then run ethernet cable to the other comp.

thanks, I think I'll go exchange the modem right now...but I'm still kinda clueless. The installation guy said I can use a router and put it right in my "master panel", and that would be all I had to do (I think).

So does that mean I can just get a "wired router" maybe, and do something right in the master panel and be done, since I already have internet cable running to both floors? Or do you always need to buy an extra thing for your cpu when you use a router of any kind (wired or wireless)?

I wish I could just go in caveman style, jam my modem in there (in the master panel,) and have it power both internet connections. Would this be possible just with an ethernet splitter or something?

yeah, you'd pretty much need to see it. Thanks for the help though man, I'll probably just call these installation guys back over for some BS reason and get the scoop (and hope they don't charge me, lol) peace
