and all I have to say is that DJs are shit. the whole job is a load of crap. first, you dont actually do anything, and they pay you an absolute crapload. and bring you free drinks. and food. and the girls drool all over you and ask for your number. but you get so tired standing there pressing play, that you cant be fagged actually picking the girls up, all you want is another fish finger, and to sit down cos your feet hurt.

very strange, lately my life has become lol

Seriously, coming from someone that knows, if you "don't do shit" while you are doing you're gig then you are a fuckin ipod dj bro. Buy some real turntables and then tell me that same thing.

And btw there is more to DJ'ing than standing there and pressing play lol

I got two turntables and a microphone.
Take me home in my elevator bones!

I got plastic on my mind.

do you just play songs? if so then thats not a really dj. a real dj will beat match and mix the songs together.

Or get Virtual DJ install on a PC or Laptop. Start mixing songs and matching bpm's and synching beats

where'd you DJ at a kids birthday party? Most DJ's at all the clubs i've gone to sync, fade and sample drop every song together, shit takes a ton of practice and time to learn like them dudes do... alot more than just pressing play

Ditto.

And ya virtual dj isnt a bad place to start to learn the basics on the cheap. Especially because you can buy a cheep usb controller that has pitch faders and pitch bend wheels and all that so it has the feel of some dj cd players.

oh God here we go, we have a purist who sneers at partymakers

ok, this is how it is. in real life, I actually make the world better. peopel come into my pharmacy with some killer disease, and i assess them and help them get well. stuff like that counts in the world. when i work construction, i build structures that people live/work in, to a high standard (im proud of my workmanship) again, that sort of the thign counts in the world.

now look, i know that throwing a good party and mixing your beats together and all that does make peoples night better, but compared to the other work i do, its kinda laughable. i mean, i dont want to undermine your contribution to the world or anything with youre elite_DJ_skillz, but knowing when to play "summer rain" isnt on the same level as a home medication review for a terminally ill patient, or building something worth $1.5M

...or perhaps it annoys you that after all the training that ive put in, that i really dont find it that difficult to read a crowd, get everyone on board, excited, in a good mood, and screaming while they dance. I can beatmatch quite easily and do some mashes, but you know, i cbf. i find a nice drop point, i time it properly, and i drop. sure sometimes last night i got bored and matched it all up etc etc etc but eh. whatever. its all the same. drunken yobbos dont realise how much work you do and how awesomely you just pulled off that hot drop, and are actually just hanging out waiting for you to play the nutbush, so that they can drag their aunt marie onto the dancefloor cos thats all she dances to.

fucking purists, mang. all they do is break balls and whinge. "oh youre not a real DJ, real DJs play vinyl, yorue jsut a jukebox" ...yes yes yes im a jukebox, whatever. pay me, i have girls to shag.

omgggggggggg i didnt even see this one before i typed out the above one!!! omgggggggg!!! lolol

I bet he played 80s songs all night.
i prefer 70s, actually lol

anyway im over this conversation. simple fact is that theres room in this city for 100 club DJs, while the other 2000 "real DJs" play to an awesome crowd of one in their bedroom. im just a guy, finding the whole thing hilarious :)

(the DJ Golden D thing cracked me up, awesome LOL)

Dude you are way off. I'm not a "purist". I happen to own some techs but I spin using Serato with mp3s when I'm doing open format/rap/party music, and cd players for house and trance mixing. I don't look down on people that don't use vinyl or anything like that.

I read the title "Just finished my first DJ gig" then I read you say "you dont actually do anything" and "you get so tired standing there pressing play, that you cant be fagged actually picking the girls up". That painted this picture in my mind: Guy just started mixing, doesn't really know anything about it except that you just play a bunch of songs you heard on the radio in order, then bitches about how its so boring and easy.

Obviously, according to your second post, you know how to beatmatch and most importantly how to read a crowd and pick the right tracks (which is what DJing really is). So you know just how much there is to it. Why then, if you know that, did you post any of the stuff you said in your first post?

LOL ya man I definitely don't take it 100% seriously either. I am actually a database administrator during the day, not exactly helping people like you :p but that is the career that I take 100% seriously. I just DJ for fun. I do have some real respect for DJ's that put together really amazing sets though. But thats more of the serious, large venue kind of stuff. Not like playing party's/bars/small clubs.

Me?

Actually ya, I had wanted to be a pharmacist at one time but now it's just a hobby of mine :p

Seriously though, I really did want to get into it but then I found out how much medical school you had to do.

its ok, i dont help them cos i like them. i just want them to put me in their will as that nice pharmacist man LOL

i agree and have lots of respect for the big club guys - takes a lot of skill, and a lot of nerve - but the attitude of a lot of people in the industry totally stinks - its like yorue expected to go from knowing nothing to knowing everything/looping/sampling/mashing overnight else not be "worthy" of being called a "real dj" - but that being said, the guy i have the most respect for is a friend who can run a dancefloor like noone else - small club, crap dancefloor, but ive never seen him lose it. the guy before him wont even have a dancefloor, then he'll get on, and using almost the same tracks as the previous guy, will get the floor jamming. then he leaves, someone else comes on, and the floor disperses. bastard. I want to decapitate him and take his skillz, like in Highlander or something lol

I know a guy who knows a guy, and he talked me out of it. supposedly, its fucking boring and makes you want to take all the drugs instead of give them to patients

You hit the nail right on the head man. When it comes down to it, you can have all the technical skills in the world, but if can't pick the right tracks or escalate the energy the right way then you are still a crappy DJ.

the pill heads are at least the fun ones. most of the pharmacists i know have seriously boring lives. i tell them about what i get up to and they say "wow its like a movie!!!"

no dude. my life isnt like a movie. you jsut need to commit suicide is all

Thats the way it is tho, you can't have an opinion on something unless you have a 6 year degree in the subject.

Kinda like those people who are all about Linux, and Ubuntu and whatever the fuck PC OS that ISNT Windows, it's like you're a burden to the planet in their eyes if you run Windows and don't take months of your life learning some programming and advanced shit to run one of those other OS's designed for sys admins. And they feel this has to be done by everyone because , well, FUCK MICROSOFT BOO HOO.
